Now, facing Josefina, her demeanor was so unyielding, as if she were spitting fire, and it made Billy feel like she was a complete stranger.
Billy recalled his purpose for coming here and began, âJosie, since you work at this company, do you know the CEO?â
Josefina herself was the CEO of the company, a fact sadly unknown to Billy.
Josefina just hummed in response, and Billy, eyes sparkling with hope, pressed on, âSo, you have a good relationship with them?â
Another hum from Josefina, and Billy got all wound up, âJosie, since youâre tight with them, could you talk to them? Ask them to sell those design blueprints to our company.â
Josefina was taken aback, staring at Billy in disbelief, âYou want to buy design blueprints?â
Billy nodded earnestly, âYeah, you might not know this, but Ava from your company came to ours with some designs, and it turns out they were knock-offs of your companyâs work. That womanâs put me in a real bind. Iâve got the factory working overtime producing these clothes, and now, because of Avaâs little stunt, all these customers who pre-ordered are demanding refunds. If this keeps up, itâll be the death of me.â
Josefina hadnât expected Billy was looking to purchase design blueprints. A sly grin crept across Josefinaâs face as she asked softly, âAnd what makes you so sure the company will agree to sell them to you?â
Billyâs reply was quick, âIâve got to at least try, right? Josie, you were once my daughter after all. Help me out here, talk to your CEO and convince them to sell me the designs.â
âAnd how much are you willing to pay?â Josefina inquired.
Billy blurted out, âA million?â
Josefina laughed, a mocking glint in her eyes that made Billyâs skin crawl. âWhatâs so funny?â he asked, irritation creeping into his voice.
âIâm laughing at how you just throw out a million like it's pocket change. Mr. Antonio, are you sure your headâs screwed on right?â
Billy was seething, but remembering he needed Josefinaâs help, he swallowed his anger. In a softer tone, Billy pleaded, âJosie, come on, help me out.
Have a word with your CEO for me, and Iâll make it worth your while. What do you say? If your CEO is happy, do you think they would keep you at the reception desk? Youâd be promoted to his personal assistant in no time.â
Josefinaâs eyes blazed with fury, pinning Billy with a gaze so intense it felt like it could burn a hole right through him.
Her stare was as if she were looking at something devoid of life, and it made Billy extremely uncomfortable.

"Are you suggesting that I go seduce someone to benefit you?" Josefina angrily questioned.
Billy glanced around, then said in a hushed tone, âJosie, Iâm thinking of your best interest here. If my company stays afloat, youâll have a better chance of marrying some rich guy and living a good life. Isnât that what you want? Even if youâre a top student, thereâs no guarantee of landing a good job, right?â
If Billy hadnât been her foster father, and raised her once upon a time, Josefina would have thrown him out on the spot.
His soul was just too foul. With an icy gaze, Josefina fixed Billy in place, âNot everyone has a soul as filthy as yours. Get out.â
Billyâs temper flared at the rebuke, and he bellowed back, âYou dare raise your voice at me? Josefina, you're just a receptionist, what right do you have to kick me out? Are you the boss here?â
Right on cue, the receptionist returned with a puzzled look, âPresident Josefina, whatâs going on? Should I call the police?â
