Lauren glared furiously at Josefina who was standing behind Oliver, while Ruby stepped forward and helped her to her feet.
With gritted teeth, Lauren spat out, âJosefina, youâve ruined Rubyâs celebration dinner. Youâve made a laughingstock of our family. How can you still have the nerve to hide behind a man?â
âOh, whatâs wrong? Jealous because youâve got no man to hide behind? So youâre picking on our Josie?â Oliver asked icily.
While Lauren was berating Josefina, Rubyâs gaze settled on Oliver. He had a handsome face, tall stature. His lips pressed into a thin line. His gaze was sharp and piercing, and he exuded an air of haughty nobility from head to toe. This was, without a doubt, the most dashing man Ruby had ever seen in Josefinaâs company.
âJosie, itâs only been a few days, and youâve found yourself a new boyfriend, huh?â
The emphasis on ânewâ was intentional. Ruby wanted the man before her to understand that Josefina was a woman of fleeting affections, flitting from one man to the next.
Josefina knew Rubyâs tricks all too well, and fortunately, Oliver was no ordinary guy â he knew Josefina was a good girl.
Seeing Oliver unmoved by her provocations, Ruby added more fuel to the fire, âJosie, your love life is quite the scandal.â
Oliver chuckled dismissively, âWho are you to judge Josie?â
Josefina stepped out from behind Oliver, and her eyes were filled with indignation. âLauren, Ruby scored a 250 â how is that my fault? The principal called your family, not me. Why blame me?â
âWho asked you to leave our number to the principal!â Lauren shot back.
With a self-deprecating laugh, Josefina retorted, âIf I had known this would happen, why would I have left that number?â
Josefina had worked hard for her final exams, wanting only to prove her worth to her family and to gain some of the attention from Billy and Lauren.
Oliver frowned. His face darkened as he spoke coldly, âAre you blaming Josie for your own lack of ability?â
Lauren and Ruby were annoyed. This guyâs love for Josefina was getting out of hand â how could she possibly deserve it?
Oliver couldnât be bothered with them and continued, âOur Josie is exceptionally talented, incredibly bright. If you canât handle it, why donât you try to top the class yourself?â

Oliver took Josefinaâs hand and they both climbed into the moving truck. As Oliverâs vehicle pulled away, he heard that Josefina planned to ride back with the moving truck, and he immediately instructed his driver to take off. He couldnât let Josie go back alone in a moving truck â it was too risky!
Ruby and Lauren watched, dumbstruck, as the pair got into the truck, with disbelief etched on their faces.
Ruby said with disdain, âMom, I thought my sister had snagged a rich guy, living the high life. But they donât even have a car and have to ride in a truck?â
Lauren scoffed, âWith her looks, you think a rich guy would settle for her? Sheâs only good for a fling. At best, she can snag some useless male prostitute!â
Rubyâs gaze seemed to drift away, following Oliver as he left.
Lauren, not hearing a response from Ruby, turned to see her daughter staring blankly and nudged her, âRuby, whatâs the matter with you?â
Ruby snapped back to reality. âHuh? What happened?â
âI was talking to you, but you seemed miles away. Whatâs up?â
Ruby paused, âI was just thinking... how little self-respect my sister has now.â
