I was not in the mood for breakfast food or the cheerful pop music on the dinerâs speakers. For the second day in a row, I hadnât woken up with that horrible crunching sound echoing in my head.
Instead, Iâd woken up to Lina. And my asshole friend had ruined it.
âWhereâs your marshal shadow?â my asshole friend asked.
âProbably still in bed. Where I should be. You interrupted something.â
âYou should be thanking me.â
âHave you lost your fucking mind?â I said just as the server approached.
âI can give you another minute,â he said hesitantly.
âCoffee. Black. Please,â I added as I slid my menu to the edge of the table and glared at Lucian.
âWeâll both have the smoked salmon eggs Benedict with yogurt and berries,â my cockblocking friend said.
âSure thing,â the kid said before he hustled away.
Lucian had a way of intimidating and impressing people. Often both at the same time. Today, however, he was only pissing me off.
I scrubbed a hand over my face. âWhat the hell is going on with you?â
âIâm here to ask you that very question,â he said, frowning down at his phone before tucking it into his suit jacket.
âYouâre like a vampire who stays up plotting how to cockblock his best friends.â
âYouâve spent two nights in bed with her andââ
âHow do you know I spent two nights in bed with her?â I interrupted.
âTwo nights in bed with who?â My brother slid into the booth next to me looking pissed off and like heâd just rolled out of bed.
âWhat are you doing here?â I demanded.
He yawned and signaled for coffee. âLucy called. Said it was important. Two nights in bed with who?â
âIâm not talking about it. And how in the fuck do you know what my sleeping arrangements are?â I asked, turning back to Lucian.
âInformation finds its way to me.â
âI swear to God, if Mrs. Tweedy is listening at my door with a drinking glassââ
âWhat the hell is going on with you two?â my brother cut in.
The server returned with coffee for all.
âCan I get you anything for breakfast?â he asked Knox.
âMaybe after I find out who my brotherâs taking to bed.â
âJesus. Itâs nobodyâs business who Iâm taking to bed. What I want to know is why in the hell Lucian showed up at Linaâs door at six in the morning and dragged me out of bed for fucking breakfast.â
âYou were at Linaâs at six in the morning?â Knox didnât sound happy about that.
âFrankly, I wouldnât have had to be there if my lunch with your bedmate had gone better yesterday,â Lucian said, sounding annoyed.
I was considering lunging across the table and grabbing him by the lapels of his fancy-ass suit when the server wisely decided to disappear.
âWhy are we here? What are you doing having lunch with Lina? And what the fuck does that have to do with you suddenly having a hankering for eggs Benedict?â
âWhy the fuck were you at Linaâs at 6:00 a.m.? And the answer better not be that sheâs the one youâre banging,â Knox snarled.
Lucian cocked an eyebrow at me and picked up his mug. âShe told you we had lunch, but she didnât tell you why? Interesting.â
âNone of this is interesting to me. Either get to the point or get out of my way,â I said.
âIf someone doesnât start answering questions, Iâm gonna start throwinâ punches,â Knox warned.
âThings arenât right with him,â Lucian said, pointing to me. âThey havenât been since the shooting.â
âNo fucking shit, Sherlock. Some asshole put two holes in me. It takes a while to come back from that.â
âYou say that as if youâre trying.â
A white-hot anger clawed its way to life under my skin. Next to me, my brother tensed.
âFuck you, Lucy,â I said. âI am trying. Iâm doing my PT. Iâm going to the gym. Iâm going to work.â
He shook his head. âPhysically, youâre healing. But mentally? Youâre not the same. You hide it. But the cracks are starting to show.â
âIâm gonna need something stronger than coffee if weâre having this conversation,â Knox muttered.
I picked up my coffee and considered whipping it at him. âGet to the point, Lucy.â
âYou donât need distractions. You need closure. You need to remember. You need to find Hugo. And you need to get him off the street.â
âGetting Hugo off the street doesnât change a damn thing about whatâs already happened. And how the hell is remembering what happened going to put me back together again?â
Did that blank spot in my memory hold the key? If I finally remembered how it felt to face death, would I be ready to live again? Wasnât that part of what I was struggling with? I could put criminals behind bars, but that didnât undo what theyâd already done. I could stop them from doing it again, but I couldnât prevent the first.
I must have raised my voice because the couple at the table next to us turned to look at me.
âI canât believe you got me out of bed with Naomi for this,â Knox complained.
âSame here.â
âYour brother was in bed with Lina,â Lucian tattled.
âThe fuck he was. The fuck you were,â Knox said, swinging my way.
âDonât you fucking start,â I warned.
âI told you to stay away from her.â
âI told her the same,â Lucian said.
âWhat? Why?â Knox and I snapped together.
âSame team, Knox,â Lucian reminded him.
âDid you threaten her?â I asked, my voice low and dangerous.
âYouâre damn right I did.â
âWhat the fuck is wrong with you? Both of you,â my brother demanded.
âSheâs taking advantage of you,â Lucian insisted.
âYouâre really starting to piss me off, Lucy,â I warned.
âGood. Thatâs a start.â
âYou are not to go near Lina again,â I told him. âYou canât fucking threaten people on my behalf. Especially not her.â
âI canât believe youâre sleeping with Lina after I told you not to,â Knox growled.
âAnd you canât bury your head in the sand hoping things will get better. Your father spent the last few decades numbing himself to life. What youâre doing isnât much different,â Lucian said.
A charged silence fell over our table as we glared at each other.
âIâm depressed. Okay, you fucking assholes? My life has been one big black hole since I woke up in that hospital bed. Happy now?â It was the first time Iâd admitted it out loud. I didnât much care for it.
âDo I look happy?â
To his credit, Lucian looked miserable.
âTell me what any of this has to do with Lina,â my brother said, his face in his hands.
âI donât believe sheâs being truthful. I have concerns she could take advantage of you when youâreâ¦like this. She shows up in town a day before Hugo made a move on Naomi and Waylay. She didnât tell you about her real job. She moves in next door. And she just so happens to have a history with the marshal assigned to you.â
âShe also picked my ass up off the floor, got me upstairs, and helped me through a fucking panic attack two nights ago. I donât know what the fuck it is about her but the closer I am to her, the better I feel. The easier it is to get out of bed and force myself to go through the motions. So while I appreciate your concern, Iâll point out that sheâs been there for me in a way no one else has been. Not you. Not Knox. No one.â
Lina made me feel like a man, not like the broken shell of one.
Lucianâs jaw tightened beneath his neatly trimmed beard.
âTwo smoked salmon eggs Benedicts.â The server appeared with our breakfast.
âThanks,â I said flatly when it became clear Lucian wasnât going to.
âCan I get you anything else right now? More coffee? Napkins to mop up any future bloodshed? No? Okay then.â
âSheâs lying to you,â Lucian insisted. âSheâs here because of you.â
âYou both need to shut your damn mouths now,â Knox ordered. âLina is one of the fucking good ones.â
âYou donât trust her with your brother either,â Lucian pointed out.
âBecause heâs gonna get his stupid heart broken, thatâs why,â my brother said in exasperation. âNot because sheâs taking advantage or whatever bullshit you made up in that suspicious-ass mind of yours. She isnât gonna settle down and be a copâs wife and chase after a bunch of kids. So if you go fallinâ head over heels for her and she kicks you in the gut on the way out the door, Iâm the one whoâs gonna have to deal with your bitching and moaning about it.â
I was oddly touched, but still mostly pissed off.
I faced them both. My brother and my best friend thought I was too weak to survive this.
âGo near her again and I will make you regret it,â I said, my knuckles going white on the handle of my mug.
âIâm sayinâ the same thing to you,â Knox said to me.
âNot your call to make,â I reminded him.
âI donât trust her,â Lucian said stubbornly.
âYeah? And I didnât trust that dental hygienist you dated for a month three years ago.â
âYou were right not to. She stole my watch and my bathrobe,â my friend admitted.
âLina isnât after me for my watch and I donât have a bathrobe.â
âNo. But sheâs after something. A liar can smell a lie.â
âStop looking into her.â
âIf you get your head on straight, Iâll stop keeping tabs,â Lucian said.
When Lucian Rollins kept tabs, that meant he knew what was in your garbage before it went out to the curb. It meant he knew what you were going to have for dinner before you did. The man had a gift for information gathering, and I shouldnât have been surprised that heâd wield it against me. Especially if he thought it was for my own good.
âI donât need to be hearing this.â
âYes, you do,â he insisted. âIâm hearing more rumors that Duncan Hugo didnât run off with his tail between his legs.â
âSo what?â I shot back.
âYouâre a loose end. A direct threat to him. You canât hide in the blanks in your memory forever. I need you to be operating at one hundred percent. Because if he does get to you again, if he does manage to take you outâ¦that leaves me with only Knox as a friend.â
âHilarious.â
âFuck you,â Knox muttered.
âYouâre too good to let this end you. You need to claw your way out of this darkness if necessary and beat him. And youâre not going to accomplish that by distracting yourself with a woman you canât trust.â
âThereâs a simple solution to this. Both of you stay the hell away from Lina,â Knox said.
âFuck you both.â
