Moxie opened her mouth. Then she closed it. A pensive look passed over her face as she realized what Noah was implying.
âYouâre going to pretend that the summoning went exactly as it was supposed to, and that the demon is actually trapped inside you?â
âExactly. That would account for the missing memories and give me a perfect position to hide and wait out this whole debacle while I figure out what the Linwicks were actually up to and just how much threat this demon will actually pose.â
âAnd what about when they test you? Thereâs no way theyâll just take your word for it.â Moxie crossed your arms. âTheyâll test you. How are you planning to pass off as a demon that powerful?â
âIâve got some ideas on that,â Noah replied. âIâll need to do a little research on demons to make sure I properly understand how they work and what they act like, but I think I could pull it off.â
Moxie chewed her lower lip. âIf thereâs really a powerful demon here, getting away is a good idea, and now would be the best time to do it since there are still a few months until the next exam. If Brayden agreed and you really did manage to pull a fast one over the Linwicks, then you might be onto something. But what about your students?â
âIâll have to speak with them. I havenât been doing my job ever since the exam. Iâve got some makeup to do. A lot of it. Iâm going to tell them everything I just told you. They need to be able to make an informed decision themselves.â
âI see,â Moxie said. âWell, it sounds like youâve actually put a little thought into this. Itâs not the best plan, but if you really do manage to keep your cover, it isnât terrible. I might have to take Emily somewhere as well. I donât want to be around when a high Rank demon attacks. Even with equivalently strong mages, thereâs going to be a lot of damage.â
âYou could come with us,â Noah offered. âI promised to let you shadow my training, but then I didnât do anything since then. There will be a lot of opportunities for that at the Linwick estate.â
A bark of laughter slipped out of Moxieâs mouth. âSeriously? Did you forget who I am? Iâm a Torrin, Vermil. If I showed up at the Linwickâs estate, even with you, Iâd probably get killed in my sleep. Thereâs no way I can go there, and I wouldnât send Emily there either.â
Noah winced. He had forgotten. âOh. Right.â
âWe might join for the first portion of the trip, though,â Moxie mused. âIâve been meaning to get her some more practical survival experience. As long as we break away before we get too close to the Linwicks, everything should be fine.â
âTrip?â Noah asked. âThey used a portal to send Brayden here. I thought theyâd let us use that again.â
âBrayden got a portal because it was an urgent matter. Magic like that needs a specialized, high Rank mage. Thereâs no way theyâd waste time and energy making a portal back for you. Itâs going to be a week or two of normal travel.â
âAh. I suppose Brayden would know the way back, then,â Noah said. âIâll just have to convince him this is the right call. I donât think that should be too hard. Youâll join us, then? Assuming Isabel and Todd agree to go.â
âIf you can convince Brayden that itâs a good idea to let us come for the first part of the journey. If youâre finally ready to get your ass in gear and show me what I was originally waiting for, then Iâll come. Just donât get your hopes up too much â I donât think youâre going to be able to convince Brayden.â
âIâll focus on Isabel and Todd first,â Noah said. âI think heâll be more than pliable. Iâm going to go find them before itâs too late today.â
Moxie shrugged. âYou know where to find me. Donât get killed by a demon on the way out.â
Noah rolled his eyes and headed out of Moxieâs room, closing the door behind him before starting down the hall toward the exit of the T building. When he stepped outside, Lee was already waiting for him, leaning against the wall.
âDid you find what you needed?â
âYeah. Did you overhear?â
âI did. Iâve got very good hearing. Good senses in general.â
âI gathered, based on how you kept smelling things that shouldnât actually have any smell. Iâm not sure how you watch over things from outside, but Iâll just trust that it works. Do those senses of yours happen to know where Isabel and Todd are? Theyâre next on the list of people to speak with.â
âI can find them. I memorized their scents,â Lee said.
On a list of things that I wouldnât want to be caught dead ever saying, that would be pretty close to the top.
âFantastic. Could you get them and tell them to come meet me in our classroom? Itâs better than my room, considering Brayden is still sleeping in there. It wonât take long.â
Lee nodded and blurred, sprinting off faster than Noahâs eyes could track. He shook his head in disbelief.
Sheâs supposed to be Rank 1?
Now that Noah thought about it, theyâd never really addressed her Rank after the demon revelation had come out. There was a very good chance that Lee had told him she was a Rank 1 to keep his guard down when heâd originally thought she was a Skinwalker.
Iâd put her more like a Rank 2 or 3, I think. She was able to fight Moxie, but Moxie also wasnât using magic, which is the majority of her strength. Not a very good reference to judge things off.
Noah shook his head. It didnât particularly matter at the moment. He had more important things to worry about. When Lee got back, heâd just ask her.
He headed over to his room in building G, following the winding hallway that heâd now grown somewhat familiar with until he stepped through the doorway into the room. The desks were still aligned from when Moxie had fixed them, but the light filtering in through the roof was dim due to clouds obscuring the lowering sun.
Noah walked over to stand by the podium.
And then he did one of his least favorite things in the world.
He waited.
***
Lee didnât make Noah wait long. She walked into the classroom just twenty minutes later, joined by Isabel and Todd. Both of the students had confused expressions on their faces.
âIs this an extra class or something?â Isabel asked. âThings are going crazy right now. Iâm not sure this is the best time to do it. Someone killed the Hellreaver Ape.â
âSo Iâve heard,â Noah said. He cleared his throat and tapped a finger on the podium. âThis wonât take too long. I just wanted to discuss something with you.â
Isabel and Todd exchanged a glance, then lowered into two of the desks.
âNormally, when I hear that, it means Iâm in trouble,â Todd said.
âNeither of you did anything wrong. Donât worry,â Noah said with a wave of his hand. âItâs more on my end, really. Iâd like to apologize.â
âApologize?â Isabel asked. âFor what?â
âIâve been a piss poor professor over the last few days. After the exam finished, I let a⦠personal project consume too much of my time. As your professor, it is my duty to ensure that you receive all the time you are entitled to. My own pursuits should be done without impacting yours.â
âI just figured you got tired after suddenly doing work after years of being a bum,â Todd said, rubbing the back of the head. âI do that too.â
âYou are a student. Iâm a teacher,â Noah said. âThe standards are different. I donât rely on your continued interest. Thatâs all on you. If you donât put effort into the class, then thatâs on you. But if I donât put the effort in, then Iâm hindering you. This isnât me trying to get pity. I am simply making a promise to do better in the future.â
âThank you. We appreciate it,â Isabel said, shifting uncomfortably. âThat couldnât have been what this was about. Are you sure something didnât happen?â
âI didnât say that,â Noah said, clasping his hands together and leaning forward. âI wonât make you do this, but Iâd like to request both of you make a promise that you wonât share anything that Iâm about to share with you.â
Isabel and Toddâs eyebrows rose.
âWhoa. A secret? Iâm in,â Todd said with a huge grin. âOn my Runes ââ
âWait!â Noah snapped. âNot a Rune Oath. A promise. A normal one.â
Todd blinked, then nodded. âOkay. I swear not to share anything you tell me in the next ten minutes with anyone else.â
Isabel shot Todd a sharp look, then shook her head and sighed. âI swear not to share anything you tell me in the next ten minutes with anyone else.â
âAccepted,â Noah said. âThank you.â
âJust tell me the juicy things,â Todd said eagerly. âCome on. You know something about the Hellreaver, donât you?â
âLee, please ensure we arenât disturbed,â Noah said.
Lee nodded and slipped out the doorway.
âYes,â Noah said once sheâd left.
Todd rubbed his hands together, raising slightly from his chair in excitement. âOh, that is too cool. So? Was it a conspiracy? Are the Linwicks trying to take down Arbitage because they donât like how the school is using their money? Or is it a rival family? Is it the Torrins?â
Noah opened his mouth, then paused. âJust how into gossip are you?â
Todd reddened and sat back. He cleared his throat. âNot at all. I just pick things up every once and a while, you know? It isnât on purpose.â
âHeâs obsessed with it. Fortunately, he still knows how to keep a secret when heâs properly motivated,â Isabel said. âYouâve got my interest too, though. Especially if something bad is happening to the noble houses.â
âRight. Well, I wonât beat around the bush. I killed the Hellreaver Ape.â
Isabel and Todd stared at him, both clearly waiting for a punchline to a joke that never came. The grin on Toddâs face faltered.
âWhat? You?â
âIt had a⦠grudge against me,â Noah said. âBecause of all the monkeys I killed in the forest. And I felt the same way toward it.â
âGods above,â Isabel murmured. âIt was a Great Monster. A weak one, but a Great Monster. Youâre Rank 1. How did you possibly manage to take it down? If it was Magus Moxie I would have seen it, but⦠Rank 1.â
âI cheated,â Noah said plainly. âIt shouldnât have been my victory, but it came down to me or it. Unfortunately, I think you can imagine what the problem is now.â
âYeah,â Todd said, quickly turning serious. âYouâre dead if they figure out you did it. Are they onto you? Do you need our help escaping?â
Noah chuckled. âNo, but you arenât that far off either. I donât think they really suspect me for the same reasons you were surprised, but Iâve recently learned about a significant threat in the vicinity of Arbitage â a demon, to be precise. One thatâs around Rank 5. It isnât anything I can deal with or even report, due to the circumstances of the Hellreaver. Thusâ¦â
âYouâre leaving,â Isabel finished, her face darkening.
âIâm proposing a field trip,â Noah corrected. âI wonât leave if you donât. The threat hasnât acted yet, so who knows. Maybe it wonât. I donât know.â
âWhere would they even let you go? If they suspect you of something, they wonât let you leave Arbitage,â Todd said.
âThe Linwick estate. One of the investigators is my brother,â Noah said. âIâm pretty sure heâll agree to take us there. Thereâs an obvious drawback, though.â
âYeah. We have their runes,â Isabel said, swallowing heavily. âThatâs not the safest spot for us to go.â
âWhich is why I wonât make the decision for you,â Noah said. He pushed away from the podium and stepped around it. âDonât choose now. Think on it overnight. I donât think they have any way to detect your runes are from them, but Iâm not sure. It may very well be safer to stay here. I wonât choose for you.â
âWeâll think on it and tell you our decision by tomorrow morning,â Isabel said, exchanging a look with Todd. âIt sounds like we might be in danger either route we take.â
âPossibly,â Noah agreed. âFor now, Iâll wait until my brother wakes up from the drunken stupor I put him in. Iâve got to convince him anyway if we want to get anywhere.â
âYou put an investigator in a drunken stupor while he was investigating a murder that you did?â Isabel asked, raising an eyebrow.
âNo comment,â Noah replied.
âThatâs badass,â Todd said with a huge grin. âWere you always this awesome?â
âIâm not sure awesome is the right word here.â Isabel shook her head. âThis is some pretty dangerous information, Professor. Why did you share it with us without using a Rune Oath?â
âMaybe he thinks weâre going to get killed,â Todd said. âCould be possible, especially with a Rank 5 demon strolling around.â
âItâs not that,â Noah said with a sigh. âI was thinking about Rune Oaths â actually, this might as well be our lesson for today. I havenât been a great teacher these past few weeks, so itâs time I get started again.â
âA lesson about Rune Oaths?â Todd asked. He scrunched his nose. âWhat about you just tell us how you killed the Hellreaver? That sounds a lot more fun.â
âAnother time,â Noah replied. âYou can start, though. Tell me what a Rune Oath is.â
âUnbreakable promise,â Todd said promptly. âOne that screws both people over if one of the two dies. It can shatter your runes or even kill you.â
âRight,â Noah said with a nod. âLetâs focus on the first half. Unbreakable is a really bold word, donât you think?â
âIâd say itâs pretty accurate.â Isabel crossed her arms and leaned forward, her brow darkening. âIâve seen how they work. Iâve seen what they do.â
Thereâs a can of worms behind those words.
âIâm not arguing that they work,â Noah said, raising a hand. âRather, Iâm arguing how they work. Letâs make a hypothetical. You and I are mortal enemies. Weâve been trying to kill each other for years. Weâre tired. We want out of the fight â but neither of us trust each other.â
âSure,â Isabel said with a shrug. âI see where youâre going. So we make a Rune Oath to stop fighting each other.â
âGreat,â Noah said. âTell me what oath youâd swear.â
Isabel thought for a few moments. Beside her, Toddâs brow furrowed in concentration as well.
âSomething simple, maybe? Like â I promise not to harm you as long as you do the same toward me,â Todd offered.
Noah hid a smile. This was a far cry from their first lesson, where both Isabel and Todd had been barely willing to cooperate with him, much less actively volunteering information without him prompting them.
âNo,â Isabel said, shaking her head before Noah could even speak. âThat leaves way too much up for interpretation. Harm is too subjective of a word. What if I reached a higher Rank than Professor Vermil? I could do something to him that I donât consider harmful and possibly slip past the Rune Oathâs restrictions. As long as he survived, I wouldnât get any backlash.â
âDamn. Good point,â Todd said, pursing his lips. âWhat would you do, then?â
âIâd have to really think on it,â Isabel admitted. âI canât come up with a single oath that could possibly encompass everything this quickly.â
âAnd therein lies the problem, at least for me,â Noah said. âIâm not saying that Rune Oaths donât work. But Iâm not a contract expert. The more general I make the terms of the Oath, the less it actually binds you. And the more specific I get, the more loopholes I leave. If I extensively studied Rune Oaths, Iâm sure I could figure out a way to write one that was borderline unbreakable by all but another expert.â
âThere are people that do that,â Todd provided. âThey arenât cheap, though.â
Figures. Lawyers exist here too, I guess.
âAs I said, theyâve got a place,â Noah said with a nod. âI had Moxie swear a Rune Oath just a little while ago.â
âSo why not us?â Todd asked.
âBecause youâre my students,â Noah replied. âMoxie has her own commitments to her family and the school. If she didnât swear a Rune Oath, there are probably people that could have forced her to answer the question. This way, she has an excuse to avoid it. Granted, if she really tries, I have no doubt she could find a way to slip around it. But the two of you didnât ask to be dragged into this. Moxieâs family will protect her if things go poorly â but you donât have that, do you?â
Isabel and Todd both looked to the side.
âYou didnât make us swear an Oath because you want us to have a way to wash our hands of you if someone figures it out?â Isabel asked.
âYes. If someone tries to force information out of you, just give it to them. Nobody can do that to Moxie, but from everything Iâve seen, they wonât have such scruples with you. You are not responsible for my failures. Iâm your teacher. The burden is on me.â
âIâm not telling anyone shit. Thatâs not how I do things.â Todd said, crossing his arms. He paused for a moment. âOkay, normally it is. But not this time.â
âMe neither,â Isabel said. âIâm not helping any nobles. Good riddance to the Hellreaver.â
âI certainly wonât complain, but donât put yourselves in any extra danger,â Noah said. âAnd you might not want to be too happy the Hellreaver is gone. It was what was keeping the monkeys in a state where we could train easily against them. Iâm afraid Iâve messed up our practice grounds.â
âWe can just go somewhere else,â Todd said.
âYeah.â Isabel nodded. âWe have to start fighting monsters that think for themselves eventually.â
âI agree,â Noah said. âBut keeping the training wheels on canât hurt. Either way, weâll figure something out. There are other places with Great Monsters. For now, though, I need the two of you to think on what you want to do in regard to the trip.â
âWe will,â Isabel promised. âTomorrow morning, next to the transport cannon.â
âTomorrow morning,â Noah confirmed. âTake this seriously, Todd. I see that look in your eyes.â
Todd cleared his throat. âYeah, we will.â
âI always do,â Isabel said.
âGood,â Noah said. He bid them farewell and left the classroom. There was still a lot he had to prepare for, no matter what decision his students made.
