After prying Noah with questions for nearly an hour, Garina left with nothing but a promise to return in the coming days â and an order to ensure that there was some tea ready for her. It was a strangely unceremonious departure. One moment, she was there.
The next, she was gone.
They were alone in the scorched acres once more.
Even still, it was several seconds before anyone spoke. They simply stood there and stared.
Noah rubbed at his throbbing skull. The headache was far from the worst it had been. Heâd been the one to kill himself so he hadnât taken too much soul damage. It could be easily fixed in a day or two⦠but he couldnât quite muster up any words for his stunned allies.
Silvertide stared at him like heâd seen a ghost. The old man rubbed at his eyes and several times moved as if to speak, only to think better of it and close his mouth a moment later. His fingers drummed a soft beat against the shaft of his staff.
âWell,â Moxie said finally, her words breaking the silence. âYouâve definitely got a problem.â
âI do not,â Noah said.
âNo, I think you do,â Lee said. She edged a step closer to Noahâs headless corpse. âDo you mind?â
âFeel free.â
Lee started shoving the entire corpse down her gullet whilst Silvertide watched, eyes flat and glassy. A pang of sympathy rang through Noah. The old soldier had been far from up to date on any of their affairs. Heâd probably had some suspicions that they werenât as they seemed, but this was a step and a few beyond strange.
âThanks for the meal,â Lee said as she finished off the last of Noahâs body and wiped her mouth with the back of her hand.
Noah ruffled her hair, taking care to avoid the horns that now jutted out of her forehead. Her transition to a full demon was going to take a bit to get used to â and he was going to have to figure out an approach to get her back into Arbitage. He doubted that people were going to be pleased with a demon hanging around them, free of Decrasâ influence or not.
âSilvertide?â Moxie asked with a concerned frown. âAre you okay?â
âI believe I may be dead,â Silvertide said. âBut I was hoping the afterlife would be considerably more enjoyable than this⦠or perhaps I have simply drank a bit too much tea. What did they put in those leaves?â
âYouâre not dead. Sorry to burst your bubble,â Noah said. âAnd as far as Iâm aware, you arenât drugged out either. Canât verify that one, though.â
And the afterlife is a lot worse than this. A whole lot worse.
âThen⦠how? Rank 7s. You died, and yet you live. Moxie had a Master Rune⦠no, made a Master Rune? I do not understand what is happening. I have seen more impossible things in the span of minutes than most see in a lifetime.â
âYouâll get used to it,â Lee said cheerfully. âThat all happened.â
âMaybe you should sit down,â Moxie said, putting a hand on the older mageâs shoulder. âThereâs a lot to process. But I think it should go without saying that you have to keep everything you heard and saw today secret from anyone and everyone.â
Silvertide let out a bark of laughter. âOh, I am no fool. If even one of the things I just witnessed was real, acknowledgement of its existence could bring the entire empire down to the ground in war. What manner of Rune allows someone to die and return to life?â
âOne thatâs best left un-thought about,â Noah suggested. He ran a hand through his hair and grimaced as a pang of pain drove through his skull. No matter how many times he got a soul damage headache, he never got used to it. He could push past them, but they were always infuriatingly agonizing. "For what itâs worth, I was planning on bringing you into the fold.â
âThe fold implies there was one secret,â Silvertide muttered. âThis is more than a fold. Itâs a hundred of them. Like a wrinkled asshole.â
Noah nearly choked on his own saliva. He hadnât expected that line from the prim and proper Silvertide â though he had seen the man steal tea leaves from a restaurant. Perhaps Silvertide wasnât quite as proper as he liked others to believe. ðãð½ðÎÃṡ
âIâd say you should get some rest, but we should find the others before they start panicking,â Moxie said. âWe donât want them getting too far thinking that Garina is hot on their heels.â
Noah started to nod in agreement. Then he paused as a faint crack from behind him caught his attention. His eyes narrowed and he turned.
âSeriously? Does not a single person listen to me?â
Isabel stepped out from the forest, Todd and Alexandra in step with her. Yoru and Brayden flanked them. A ripple passed through the air beside the group. James and Emily emerged from within the protection of an invisibility spell.
They werenât alone. Sticky and the other demons all emerged from the trees a moment later, awed expressions on their faces.
âWhatâs the point of running from a Rank 7?â Brayden asked, studying Noah with an unreadable expression. âWe got the message from Lee and ran for about ten seconds. Then we realized it didnât matter, and we might as well come to back you up. Didnât expect to find out you were⦠what, immortal?â
Noah blew out a slow breath. Everyone in their group had finally seen his secret. He was surprised to find more than a little worry twisting within him. Noah had no idea how everyone would respond to discovering that he was⦠well, him.
âImmortal probably isnât the right word. Iâd go with persistent.â

âWhatever you are, weâve been watching in case you needed backup,â Todd said, giving Noah a thumbs-up. âYou didnât. Nice. But hey, if you did, we would have been able to brag in the afterlife. After all, itâs quite the achievement to get killed by a Rank 7.â
Thatâs Todd for you. I guess he already knew the majority of the story, but itâs always nice to know heâs on my side â especially when Iâm doing cool shit.
But coming back into what they should have known was near-certain deathâ¦
âYouâre all idiots,â Noah said with a shake of his head. He couldnât exactly argue with them. Garina could have killed everyone in the forest if sheâd wanted to. Trying to flee really would have been pointless, but that didnât mean they couldnât have tried.
And, though he didnât say it, Noah couldnât quite quash the warm feeling in his chest. Staying had been stupid⦠but he still appreciated all of them for it.
âLike teacher, like student,â Todd said.
âI am not stupid. I am tactical.â
âTactically suicidal, maybe,â Isabel grumbled. âYou scared the life out of us, professor.â
âWait, youâre one of the few that do
know about what Iâm capable of,â Noah said. âIâve kept you all in the dark about a lot of things to protect you, but that one shouldnât have been a surprise to everyone.â
âProfessor, just because someone manages to come back to life once doesnât mean they can do it again,â Todd said. âAnd watching somebody kill themselves to make a point is a uniquely unsettling experience.â
âI just want to know what you did to that other Rank 7,â James said. âHowâd you terrify him like that? What did you show him, and can you teach me how to do it?â
âNo. We are not going into detail about this,â Noah said firmly. âThere are certain things about me that I think everyone has earned knowledge of, but Iâm not teaching you that. You couldnât do it even if you wanted to.â
âWhat things?â Aylin asked, eyeing Noah with something approaching reverence in his eyes.
Ah, fuck. I really donât need Aylin thinking any higher of me. He already basically acts like Iâm a minor god. This is going to give me a serious ego problem.
âItâs a long story,â Noah said. âYou could probably fill a few books with it.â
âHow many?â Lee asked.
âIâll be more than happy to settle for the abridged notes,â Brayden said. âThough I somehow suspect all this is going to do is give us even more questions.â
Most likely, yes.
âWe will be honored to hear whatever youâre willing to share with us,â Violet said. âBut you owe us no answers, Spider.â
âPerhaps not. But I trust everyone here â and youâve all earned the right to know at least a little bit more about who I am. Thereâs no point leaving you in complete darkness â but understand that you can never speak of anything I say here to anyone else.â
âYour secrets will die with us,â Vrith promised, staring at him with an expression eerily similar to Aylinâs. Noah repressed a sigh. Sheâd been one of the few demons that had just seen him as a powerful high Ranker, but now she had the same reverence in her gaze that Aylin did.
Damn it. Hopefully this clears a few things up. I really donât need anyone here looking at me like Iâm anything more than a man.
âYou all know me by a number of different names,â Noah said, drawing in a deep breath and launching straight into the thick of things. âBut my real name â and the one I got a very, very long time ago â is Noah.â
***
It took Noah another hour to summarize the biggest secrets of his life. Noah didnât go into detail on his dealings with Decras or Renewal, but he told his closest allies everything about his runes. About Sunder and about the afterlife â and about what had come after it. He told them of Vermil and of Father. Of how heâd met Lee and of everything that had happened leading up to the trip to the Damned Plains. He spoke of what had happened within the Damned Plains, of Sievan and Wizen.
And then it was done.
An hour almost felt like it was too short for the story, but he was glad it wasnât longer. Heâd been hoping that some of the reverence would evaporate when everyone learned he was just a teacher that had spent a very, very extended stay in hell.
He couldnât have been more wrong.
By the time he was done, he could have sworn there was more respect in the slew of eyes staring up at him from the circle that theyâd made while he spoke.
There were several minutes of long silence as everyone processed Noahâs story.
âYou told me you killed Vermil,â Brayden said, finally breaking the silence. âThatâs not true. You didnât kill him. Azel did. Why did you act like it was your fault?â
âMy soul destroyed Vermilâs,â Noah said. âIt wasnât intentional, butââ
âThen it doesnât matter,â Brayden said firmly. âVermil did it to himself. You were never trying to kill him. Iâve been blaming you for a death that wasnât even your fault. Even if you hadnât been there, Azel would have killed Vermil.â
âNot to be harsh, but even if Noah had killed Vermil on purpose, he did the world a favor. That man was lost,â Moxie said.
Brayden blew out a long sigh. âI know. Father ruined him before he had a chance to become anything better. I canât help but mourn for what he could have been â but know that it isnât your fault, Noah. You donât have to take the blame for Vermilâs death, no matter how vile he was.â
âIâm more concerned with the gods,â Silvertide said, running a hand through his hair and looking far older than his years. âYouâve stolen from the god that made demons?â
âForget stealing. I thought you were a god yourself,â Aylin breathed. âBut a human found the issue with us? You did what Decras couldnât. Doesnât that meanââ
âCareful,â Violet warned. âWe donât want to draw Decrasâ ire. He may not appreciate what Noah did for us. It has to be embarrassing for a god to have his work corrected by a mortal.â
âSheâs right,â Noah said with a shake of his head. âAnd it wasnât me that found it. It was Sticky. I just helped things along a bit.â
The small demon reddened as everyone turned in her direction again. She scrunched down on herself. âI didnât do anything. It was Spiâ uh, Noah. And Wizen.â
âI canât believe youâre so good at killing yourself that you beat Wizen by convincing him to do it too,â Alexandra said in awe. âMoxie is right. You have a problem.â
âI do not have a problem,â Noah snapped. âAnd we are not going to go around saying that was how I beat Wizen. We didnât even fight!â
The looks in everyoneâs eyes told Noah that it was going to be rather difficult to stop that particular sentiment from taking hold.
âToo late,â Lee said. âYou canât complain when we just all saw you kill yourself to prove a point a little while ago. Thatâs like me saying I donât like eating.â
Noah let out a heavy sigh.
He could outmaneuver a Rank 7, but he lost a fight to an ill-founded rumor. He most certainly did not kill himself at every inconvenience. It was just that killing himself tended to solve a lot of his problems.
âIs there anything else anyone wants to ask?â Noah asked. âBecause we will not be speaking of most of this again. Itâs too dangerous to discuss.â
He could see dozens of questions in everyoneâs eyes, but none of them asked anything. For that, he was thankful. The night had been long. Between Yoru nearly killing herself â which was definitely not influenced by his own habits in any way â and all the Rank 7 drama, he was exhausted.
So, of course, it was at that moment that the air beside Noah crackled with purple energy.
His ears popped.
Jalen stepped out from a portal with his hands crossed behind his back and a wide grin on his lips.
âI have returned!â Jalen proclaimed. Then he paused and glanced around at everyone, taking in their expressions. His smile fell away and his brow furrowed in confusion. âIs something going on? What did I miss?â
