For several long seconds, Crone stared at Vermil in mute silence. Garina couldnât even muster the energy to be smug. She just joined him in staring. A part of her was starting to wonder if someone had managed to land a solid blow on the back of her head or if Ferdinand had been sneaking strange substances into their food again.
Vermil was not satisfied to let the silence rein.
âAnswer my question. Do you admit that you are unable to copy me? Or are you going to run that blade of yours across your throat?â Vermil asked. He crossed his arms before his chest, craning his neck back to defiantly meet the Apostleâs gaze. Garina was unsure if the notion was made more or less intimidating by the fact that he was buck naked.
âI will not,â Crone ground out. He twisted the weapon and slammed it back into the sheathe on his back. âYou are not the mortal that the Master is looking for. No mortal is capable of magic like that. He does not possess the ability to return from the grave, and a mortal would not have been able to develop such a power from your rank.â
âGreat. Donât really care about the latter bit, though,â Vermil said. He tapped his foot impatiently on the ground. âSee, youâve gone and made me strip naked to prove a point.â
Garina resisted the urge to cough into her fist.
Actually, Iâm pretty sure you were the one that stripped naked on your own. He technically didnât make you do anything, but Iâm not about to point that out. It might make him turn in my direction, and then Iâll see a bit more than Iâd prefer to.
âName your price. I will not betray my word,â Crone ground out. âWhat is it you want?â
Vermil smiled. âA lot of things. Iâm tempted to tell you to kill yourself just to see what would happen, but Iâm not that cruel. How about I settle for something a little simpler? You might even like it.â
âI will not deprive the Master of one of his greatest warriors. All other requests will be honored, no matter what they may be.â
âYou really need to use better wording â but a dealâs a deal. Hereâs your task. From now until I decide otherwise, you will do everything that Garina tells you to. Iâve just proved my innocence. Thus, her loyalty to your master is not in question. That means thereâs no reason for there to be any conflict of interest and you have no way to refuse this command. Also, youâre calling her Maâam from here on out.â
âWhat? Why wouldnât a Rank 4ââ
âYou thought Iâd tell you to get me runes or something?â Vermil let out a cold laugh. âI donât need your magic. Iâm Rank 4 because I choose to be, Crone. Not because I have to be. Now, whereâs that honor you were talking about?â
Garina could hear Croneâs teeth grinding within the darkness of his hood.
âSo long as her orders are not against the service of the Master, then I will heed her.â
This is not how I saw this going. Vermil is a little monster. What did he show Crone while they were together in his soul? He would have ripped most people in two for the mere insinuation that he had to follow someoneâs orders, much less mine.
Then again, I suppose ripping Vermil in two wouldnât do much of anything at all. What a terrifying power. He must have gotten it from Sievan⦠and that meanâs heâs incredibly well connected. Sievan wouldnât even share his Death Runes with the other Apostles.
âYou can fuck off,â Garina said, unable to resist the temptation to see if Crone would actually listen.
âWith pleasure.â
âJust that?â Vermil raised an eyebrow.
Croneâs fists tightened at his sides.
âIâm going to find a way to kill you with honor, Spider. Ready yourself.â
âDo what you please. Now answer Garina properly.â
âWith pleasure, Maâam,â Crone ground out. He drove a foot into the packed dirt and there was an earsplitting crack. Black energy exploded across his body and he launched into the air, blurring into the sky and disappearing within a split instant. â
There was a long second of silence. The elderly man still stared at Vermil in abject disbelief, shock so evident in his features that it almost distracted Garina from her own surprise.
Lee stared at the headless corpse on the ground with an uncomfortably hungry look in her eyes, while Moxie just looked exasperated.
Then Vermil walked over to his corpse and started pulling the blood-stained clothes off it. He didnât even look back over to Garina or the air where Crone had vanished. It barely even seemed like he cared.
âHeâs your problem now,â Vermil said as he tugged his pants off. A smirk pulled across his lips. âHope you enjoy dealing with that insufferable prick, Maâam.â
This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.
âYouâre a little shit, Vermil. You know that? Adding the last part in was entirely unnecessary. People are going to think Iâm humoring that weird bastard.â
âThen perhaps you shouldnât have come trying to threaten us. I appreciate you playing along, but I donât take kindly to people who threaten my friends.â Vermil squeezed the blood out of his jacket sleeve before slinging it over himself. âNow, do we have any further business?â
âWhat, you think Iâm just going to leave?â Garina asked. âAfter that?â
âDefine what that is.â
âYou scared a Rank 7 off. As a Rank 4. Do you have any idea how ridiculous that is?â Garina asked. âAnd you have to realize that the Apostles wonât stay gone forever. Itâs only a matter of time before youâre found.â
âIâve made it this far.â
âUp until you draw on your runes to such an intensity again,â Garina said. âThen youâre dead, and I am too. I threw my lot in with you.â
âYou wouldnât have had to if you didnât come here in the first place.â
âI canât change what I did,â Garina snapped. âMy bigger concern is the future. How are you going to deal with the next Apostle that shows up when they arenât stupid enough to let you melt their brains? Unless youâre secretly a Rank 7 in hidingââ
âIâm not.â
âThen what will you do?â
âProbably throw you under the wagon.â
Garinaâs eye twitched. Vermil was being sarcastic. With her.
âHas anyone ever told you that youâre insufferable?â
âQuite frequently, yes. I trust thereâs somewhere youâre taking this? Because Iâve got a lot of work to do and youâve caused me more than enough difficulties already.â
âI donât think you understand the significance of the situation that weâre both stuck in. If the Apostlesââ
Vermil spun on his heel, his features turning as dark as a stormy night as he strode up to stand nose-to-nose with Garina. A vein in his neck bulged as he fought to restrain anger that bubbled up from within him like steam escaping a vent in the earth.
âI know exactly how significant the situation is,â Vermil snarled. âBut thereâs shit all I can do against the other Apostles right now. That doesnât mean Iâm going to sit around and waste time. The only way to deal with power like theirs is to grow powerful enough to fight them on my own terms. That isnât going to happen if I waste time wondering about what to do. Iâm just going to get stronger.â
âYou think youâll be able to close the gap between yourself and the Apostles in the short manner of weeks or months itâll take them to track you down? The stronger you get, the more of your power will leak free.â
âThen perhaps you should look into a solution yourself,â Vermil said, the anger vanishing from his features and leaving Garina unsure if it had ever truly been there at all. Even now, she didnât have the slightest clue as to what his real personality was. He was as unreadable as a moonless night. âEither that or throw them off my trail.â
âWhy would I do something like that?â
âBecause Iâd assume you have reasons for stepping in the way you did. Youâre trying to hide something as well. That means weâre on the same side, doesnât it?â A cold smile pulled across Vermilâs lips. âLetâs see⦠how do the Apostles feel about fraternization with people outside the organization? Is Ferdinand doing well?â
Son of a bitch. Heâs sharp.
âThereâs no fraternization,â Garina said flatly. âIâm just⦠enjoying a little time off. Iâve been watching over this little toy kingdom for far too long. How would you like doing the same shitty, thankless job for generations?â
âIt would probably be a pain in the ass,â Vermil said with an understanding nod. âSo it seems it would be in both of our interest to keep this little alliance of ours. You keep telling people that Iâm your student instead of wasting time trying to kill me. Iâll handle things on my end and do my best to make sure our cover doesnât get blown. Weâll both be happy.â
I canât believe Iâm bargaining with a Rank 4. Heâs not asking for what I would have expected. Any Rank 4 should have asked me for Runes to get stronger. I could have boosted him up to Rank 6⦠but instead, he wants me gone.
Thatâs odd. Very odd. Now that he knows our goals should be the same since weâre both fucked if the Apostles discover we were lying, he should be trying to capitalize on it. Heâs clearly bold enough to.
But instead, heâs being abrasive. This isnât just Vermil being rude. Heâs doing this entirely on purpose. He was nothing like this during the dinner we had⦠and I suspect that was closer to his true personality than this is.
Heâs hiding something.
Sorry, Vermil. Iâm not that easy to manipulate.
âNo,â Garina said.
Vermil blinked. âWhat?â
âYour story is going to evaporate the moment an Apostle asks you a single question about us. You donât even know what Runes I use, nor do you have any techniques that I might have taught you. For that matter, I donât even know the name of your main Rune.â
âAnd?â
âHow am I meant to pretend to be your student when we know nothing about each other?â Garina crossed her arms in front of her chest and arched an eyebrow. âYou donât actually plan to pretend to do anything, do you? Youâre just trying to get rid of me.â
âCorrect.â
Garina snorted at that one, and the corner of Vermilâs lip twitched as well. Heâd been caught and they both knew it.
âLetâs be honest with each other for a moment,â Garina said. âI genuinely did not want to find you. I came here for a Rank 7 that isnât here anymore. Thereâs no animosity between us â but I will not allow the Apostles to destroy what Iâve built.â
Vermil blew out a long breath. His posture shifted as some of the tension drained out of it and his shoulders relaxed. âI know where youâre coming from. Thatâs the same position Iâm in, but youâre just as much of a threat to my people as the other Apostles are. You have to understand that.â
âI do. But the other Apostles will come. Make no mistake. Being my apprentice is not a coveted title. Our order very rarely takes on new members. You will be tested. And if you fail, so do I.â
âCanât you just say you changed your mind?â
âNo. Not that easily. But I have another idea. One that might actually work to conceal what you really are while protecting both of our interests at the same time.â
âAnd whatâs that?ân/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
Garina smiled. âI donât know who you really are or what powers you possess, but Iâd wager thereâs still a whole lot you donât know about this world. Why donât we make all the bullshit we just spilled real? This is the first time Iâve ever met someone as uniquely deranged as you. It might actually be fun.â
âWait. Do you meanââ
âI, Garina of the Seven,â she extended a hand to Vermil and a dangerous smile played across her features, âextend to you the offer of apprenticeship and access to the full knowledge of an Apostle.â
