Isabel, the rest of Noahâs students, and all of the professors in the clearing sat in a circle with seven demons â eight, if she counted Lee. She was in the process of doing a remarkable job at keeping her eye from twitching as the everyone listed off their names and an interesting fact about themselves.
âMy name is Sticky,â the small demon clutching the key in both of her hands like it was a sword said, peering out from beneath her hair shyly. âI died once, but I got better.â
You canât be serious. Another Noah?
âYou have to give us more than that. Give me details!â Jalen exclaimed, throwing his hands into the air. He seemed to be the only one in the circle who was actually enjoying the exercise. Aside from him, all the other professors had been pretty caught up over the fact that they were sitting in a group of apparently friendly demons. Noahâs reassurances that nobody was going to be killing anyone managed to placate them, but there was definitely more than a little unease.
Isabel and the rest of the humans had started the âsharing circleâ â as Noah referred to it â though Jalen had taken nearly half of their time talking about how bored heâd been for the past few weeks.
âIâm a new kind of demon,â Sticky said.
âYouâre a what now?â Silvertide asked, leaning forward. âA new kind? What does that mean?â
âNext person!â Noah said, clapping his hands together. âDonât put too much stress on Sticky, please. Sheâs just been through a lot. Aylin, youâre up.â
âIâm Aylin. If I figure anything new out from you, I might accidentally take a bite out of your runic energy,â the boy sitting beside Sticky said. âIâm honored to meet Spiderâs other minions.â
Spider? Is that his name now? I suppose he went under a new alias when he was in the Damned Plains. Better than Professor Vermil, I guess.
âStudents,â Noah corrected. âNot minions.â
âHow do you take bites out ofââ Todd started, lifting his hand and revealing a band on his hand. Then he winced and let out a slew of curses. âShit! That hurt! What was that?â
âSorry,â Aylin said. âI was wondering how you summoned fire to use this early in the ranks. You use those metal bands, huh?â
âWhatââ
Todd clapped a hand over Isabelâs mouth before she could finish the question. Then he just shook his head.
âIâm working on it,â Aylin said sheepishly. âI will try not to eat you on accident.â
âIs it my turn?â the muscular girl beside Aylin asked.
âYes,â Noah said. âNo threats, please. Everyone here is a dear friend of mine.â
âMy name is Violet. I am a Hoard Demon in Spiderâs merciful employ. Because he views you as his own, so long as you do not threaten those I care about, I will protect you all with my life.â
Well, thatâs not coming on strong at all. I⦠guess sheâs got her head on right, at least? I can respect wanting to protect your friends. But â
âI am Vrith.â The catlike demon crossed her arms in front of her chest and said nothing else.
Noah squinted at her. âFun fact, Virth. You need a fun fact. Itâs integral to the process.â
âNot to be detrimental, but what exactly is the process here?â James asked wearily. âBecause Iâm not certain Iâm seeing the point of this.â
âBonding.â Noah crossed his arms in front of his chest. âBonding through shared trauma. Now, Vrith. Fun fact. On with it.â
âI donât have a fun fact.â
âEveryone has a fun fact. You just arenât trying hard enough. Iâm sure I could come up with a few. What about how Aylin feedsââ
âI have a fun fact!â Vrith said, bolting upright like sheâd sat on an anthill. âI â uh, I donât like being seen. I like hiding. Thatâs my fun fact.â
Isabel didnât miss the flicker of a grin that danced across Noahâs lips. An involuntary shudder ran down her back. It looked like the Damned Plains hadnât left him completely without their mark.

âIâm Edda,â the tiny female small demon beside Vrith said, waving to everyone. âAnd this is Torick. My fun fact is that Torick is scared.â
âHey!â Torick yelped, his eyes darting around the clearing. He was most definitely scared. âI â Iâm not scared! Iâm just⦠constipated.â
âConstipated?â Edda asked. âWhatâs that?â
âDunno,â Torick admitted. âI heard Golon say it a while ago.â
Noah cleared his throat. âTorick and Edda are with Violet and Aylin. The four of them are siblings, but only Violet and Aylin can fight. No training for the kids. Theyâre too young right now.â
âNo such thing as too young,â Jalen said. He winced as soon as the words were out of his mouth, then hurriedly amended himself. âFor training. Too young for training. Oh, damn it. I give up. Does anyone want to play darts?â
âSit down,â Noah said, pointing at Jalen as he started to rise. âWeâll play later, but only if you finish letting everyone introduce themselves.ân/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
Jalen sat back down.
Somehow, that wasnât the most impressive thing that Isabel had seen all day.
âIâm the last one,â the demon wearing the mask said. âRight?â
âDo you really need to ask that?â Noah tilted his head to the side. âOr are you just being polite?â
âI am⦠temporarily taking up your advice,â the masked demon replied. âWe will see how long I allow for it. It makes me feel naked.â
âEffective for fighting,â Bird said under her breath.
Todd choked on his own saliva and Isabel coughed into her fist.
âMy name is Yoru.â The demoness paused for a second. âMy name is Yoku.â
They all waited for a few moments.
âInteresting fact?â Noah reminded her.
âThat was my interesting fact. I have two names. Yoru and Yoku. I made one of them specifically so a particular idiot commander would mix it up.â
âWhich one is your real name?â Todd asked.
The masked demoness thought for a moment. Her head twitched as if she wanted to tilt it to the side, but she prevented herself from finishing the motion. âI do not know.â
There was a long, awkward pause.
âI think I like Yoru,â Noah said. âBut we can call you whatever youâd prefer.â
âYoru would be nice.â
And then it was done. Everyone sat in the circle quietly for a few more long seconds. None of them spoke. Even if Isabel had wanted to, she had absolutely no idea what she should say.
There were so many emotions twisting in her chest that she couldnât make one from the other. She had no idea what sheâd been expecting, but this was somehow the most Noah way that their professor could have returned.
Finally, it was Yulin that broke the silence. The girl, who had been sitting in near complete silence the entire time, seemingly lost in contemplation of life, cleared her throat.
âIs⦠this how your class always is?â
âNo,â Emily said.
âPretty much,â James said.
âSomewhat,â Alexandra added.
âDepends on the day,â Todd said. âItâs a little less deadly than normal today. Jalen isnât throwing darts at us.â
âJalen throws darts at you?â Noah asked, blinking in surprise. âJust how much did I miss?â
âA lot of fun, mostly,â Jalen said despondently. A smile stretched across his face and he rose to his feet. âBut something tells me youâre going to make up for that soon enough. I really want to see how youâre going to manage to slip a classroom full of demons into Arbitage grounds.â
âIâve got a few ideas,â Noah said, a small grin pulling at the corner of his lips. âBut thatâs definitely going to be a little problematic. Iâm hoping they donât mind camping out for a little while until we can find a way to do more proper lodgings.â
âSpending time in the mortal plane is like a dream come true,â Aylin said, looking around the Scorched Acres with wonder scrawled across his features. âThereâs so much wood here. Iâm rich. I could stay here for a year.â
âIt wonât have to be anything that extreme,â Noah said with a chuckle. âJust for long enough until I can figure out how to smuggle some demons into school grounds.â
Yulin sent a sidelong glance at Alexandra. âHeâs always like this?â
âOh, usually much worse,â Alexandra replied absentmindedly. Her gaze was affixed on the demons, the curiosity in her expression undisguised. âI think heâs in a good mood today â but more importantly, are any of you willing to exchange sparring tips? Iâve only fought one demon before. I bet thereâs a lot I could learn from you.â
âPredict all of your opponents moves perfectly and youâll never lose,â Yoru advised.
âRun away,â Sticky put in.
âLet Spider kill them for you,â Aylin suggested.
âOr Lee,â Vrith muttered.
Noah clapped his hands together, a small smile on his face. He gestured for everyone to stand up. âWe donât have to remain in a circle forever, guys. Get to know each other â other than you, Aylin. Just talk about yourself. No asking him questions until he figures out how to get a handle on that magic.â
âIâm working on it,â Aylin said, his cheeks reddening.
âI know you are,â Noah said. âAnd Iâm sure you will. Many of the people here will be able to help as well. Weâre taking a bit of a risk doing this, but Iâm not leaving any of you behind. Everyone is to treat each other as an equal. We can all learn a lot from each other. Keep any sparring to a minimum today until we can make sure everything is safe. I donât want anyone getting hurt, okay?â
At that, every demon and human student in the clearing nodded. They rose to their feet, hesitantly at first, and the very beginnings of awkward conversation started up amongst them.
Noah broke away to catch up with the other professors while the students continued their conversation. That conversation grew just a little less uncomfortable with every passing word.
Demons and humans couldnât have possibly been more different from each other, but as it turned out, they had more than a few things in common as well.
