Noah was glad that the pizzas had turned out to be larger than heâd expected. Moxie returned with Emily a little over ten minutes after the other professor had set out. In that time, theyâd only manage to go through a little over half of one of the massive pizzas.
It had tasted every bit as good as Noah had hoped, but heâd been struck with the very unfortunate realization that heâd forgotten food tended to go best when you had something to drink together with it.
So, when Moxie walked into the room beside Emily carrying several waterskins, his eyes lit up in delight.
âYou brought drinks!â
Moxie just sighed and shook her head, tossing two of them to Todd and Isabel. She handed the last one to Noah.
âThanks,â Noah said. He nodded to Emily. âCongratulations on passing your exam. Nice to formally meet you. Help yourself to some food.â
The next thirty minutes went without much of anything other than eating. Between the five of them, they had eaten everything other than a bit less than a quarter of the last pizza. It was the first memorable meal that Noah could recall having in a very, very long time.
âAre we going to do this after every exam we pass?â Todd asked, slumping back in his chair. He wiped some tomato sauce from his mouth and grinned. âI donât think Iâm going to fail a single one if you do.â
âI think I can agree to that,â Noah replied. âLetâs focus on getting there first, shall we?â
âDeal,â Todd said. He glanced at Moxie out of the corner of his eye and straightened up slightly. âUh⦠not that Iâve got a problem with it or anything, but why is Magus Moxie here?â
âWhy does she get the honorific when Iâm just Teacherman?â Noah complained. âAnd Moxie is going to be shadowing my class with Emily for a little while.â
Emilyâs eyes widened and she shot a look at her teacher. âWhat?â
âHeâs got some interesting methods,â Moxie said with a shrug. âI think a little variation would do you well. I might have overlooked some things.â
âHe makes his students fight monsters without shields!â Emily exclaimed. âI donât want to get killed.â
Todd and Isabel exchanged a smug glance.
âWeâre done with monkeys for the time being, actually,â Noah said with a reassuring smile. âThat was mostly just for this exam. Now that itâs over, weâre going to be moving on.â
Emily let out a relieved sigh. âOh. Thatâs good.â
Moxie looked considerably less convinced. âWhen you say that, do you mean youâre done with the shieldless training? Or do you mean itâs getting worse?â
âWorse. Definitely worse,â Noah said, his grin turning predatory. He clapped Todd on the shoulder. âMy students here are determined to shoot for the top, you see. Thatâs the only way they get pizza parties. Itâs a good motivator, right?â
âWhy do you keep calling it pizza?â Moxie asked. âIâve never heard that word before.â
âCome on,â Noah muttered, the wind falling from his sails. âThat was supposed to be a cool moment. You were supposed to be impressed.â
âIâll be impressed when I see results.â
âWhat are we going to be doing?â Isabel asked. âAre we going to be training in a different area now?â
âAt some point, yes. But thereâs something more important that weâre going to start with,â Noah said. âAnd itâs something that I need to work on just as much as you do. Weâre going to be splitting our classes from here on out in half. Every other one will be taught by a different professor.â
Everyone turned toward Moxie, but she shook her head. âNot me.â
âItâs me!â
Lee sprung up from behind the desk sheâd been napping at. Isabel, Todd, and Emily all flinched, nearly jumping out of their desks.
âThe shade here is so nice. Very comfortable.â
Todd looked from Noah to Lee. Then he exchanged a knowing look with Isabel. They both just leaned back in their chairs, content to see what was going on. Emily looked considerably less convinced.
âI donât mean to cause any offense⦠but is this a joke?â Emily asked, looking to Moxie in befuddlement. âI get wanting to see what Vermil is doing, but that canât possibly be a professor. Sheâs not even in a uniform.â
âSure I am,â Lee replied. âIâm wearing armor. Thatâs a uniform.â
âNo, it isnât. Uniforms are things a lot of people wear. Do you see anyone else wearing armor?â
Lee pursed her lips. âJust because they arenât here doesnât mean there arenât people that wear armor. Lots of soldiers wear it.â
âWeâre mages, not soldiers! We havenât joined the army. Magus Moxie, come on. Tell me if youâre playing a joke or not.â
âIâm afraid not,â Moxie said. âIâm sure that Vermil plans to demonstrate just how effective his friend is.â
âOf course I do.â Noah crossed his arms. âIt does strike me that it would have been wiser to introduce her at any time other than right after we ate, but too late for that. This is Lee, and sheâs going to be instructing all of us in hand to hand combat.â
Emily glanced over her shoulder at Isabel and Todd.
âYouâre just taking this at face value?â
âDo you still have the Slasher claw?â Todd asked Noah.
He blinked, then nodded. âSomewhere in my room, yes. Why?ân/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
âBecause as long as youâve got that, Iâve decided not to question anything you do until itâs done.â
Isabel nodded. âSame here.â
âDonât worry,â Lee said cheerfully. âThis is going to be a lot of fun.â
âDo you want any pizza before we get started?â Noah asked.
Lee shook her head. âNo. I prefer meat. Eating grass doesnât really suit me. Can we start now?â
âDepends. Moxie, do you think you can keep your food down? Iâd like you to spar with Lee.â
Moxieâs eyes narrowed. âWhy me?â
âBecause youâve decided to shadow my class, of course. It would be rude of me not to make sure your student didnât completely believe the validity of my claims, and I doubt sheâd think much of any demonstration I was to make on my own. Also, youâre a lot more impressive of a fighter than I am.â
Moxie heaved a sigh and rose from her table. âLovely. Letâs get on with it, then.â
âOutside, please,â Noah said quickly. âI donât want my classroom destroyed right after you fixed it.â
Noah snagged the last pieces of pizza as they headed out, stuffing them into his mouth. If nobody else wanted them, he wasnât about to let good food go to waste.
A few minutes later, Noah and the students stood in a semicircle, watching Lee and Moxie as they squared off in the grass.
âWhat are the rules?â Moxie asked.
âPhysical attacks only. No magic,â Lee said. âAnd we go until one of us loses their footing or otherwise falls. It obviously favors me, but itâs a demonstration and not a real fight. Howâs that sound?â
âWorks for me,â Moxie said, rolling her neck and lowering into a fighting stance. Sheâd clearly had some training already.
âAnd no injuries,â Noah added, sending a sharp glance at Lee. âI donât want to have to waste a healing potion on this.â
âNoted,â Lee said. âFeel free to attack whenever youâd like. Iâll let you make the first move.â
Moxie shifted her weight from foot to foot, bouncing softly on the balls of her feet. Lee just stood, watching her as stiff as a board. Moxie shifted forward, thrusting her leg to sweep Leeâs feet out from under her.
Lee blurred. Moxie slammed into the ground, grunting as the air was knocked from her lungs.
âI win,â Lee said.
âI didnât even see her move,â Todd said with an impressed whistle. âThatâs got to be magic. Did she cheat?â
âMaybe the lesson is donât follow the rules,â Isabel mused.
âWhat is he teaching you?â Emily demanded. âThat isnât a good lesson!â
âYes it is,â Noah replied. âBut it wasnât the one I was trying to get across. Lee, help Moxie up, would you?â
Lee extended a hand down to Moxie, who accepted it and let the Skinwalker help her up. She brushed some grass off her back and shook her head.
âI have to agree with the students. I was under the impression youâre going to be teaching us something, but speed like that canât be taught.â
âCome at me again,â Lee said, ignoring Moxieâs observation. âIâll move slower this time.â
Moxie rolled her shoulders. This time, she didnât wait for Lee to give her an okay. She lunged forward. Lee stepped around Moxie, dodging the attack easily. Moxie twisted, whipping her leg toward Leeâs chest in a spinning kick.
Lee arched backward and let the kick whistle past her nose. She sprung back to her feet and took a step toward Moxie, who immediately hopped back defensively â but Lee didnât even try to attack. She just closed the distance, forcing Moxie to jump back again.
Moxie tried to sweep Leeâs legs out from under her again, but Lee jumped forward and grabbed onto Moxieâs shoulders. She lifted herself up into a handstand on the professor, then spun her legs violently.
The force of the move spun Moxie in a circle, and Lee pushed her away, dropping to the ground behind Moxie and hooking her foot out. Moxieâs leg caught on it and she tripped, hitting the ground in a roll.
She staggered upright, but the round was already over.
âHow can you move like that?â Todd asked in awe. âYouâre soâ¦â
âSmooth,â Isabel finished. âAnd bouncy.â
âBecause Iâm cheating!â Lee exclaimed before doubling over in laughter.
âYou were using magic?â Moxie asked, lowering her fighting stance and frowning.
âNope. At least, not in the way youâre thinking.â
âSo how are you doing that?â Todd asked. âThere arenât that many ways to use magic. Either you cast it actively, or youââ
âImbue something.â Emilyâs eyes widened. âYou imbued yourself?â
âPoint to silver hair!â Lee exclaimed. âYes. Iâve been Imbuing my own body ever since I was young. Itâs taken a good portion of my magical reserves which does make it so Iâve got less to work with when casting magic, but I think the results speak for themselves.â
âThatâs a common technique at higher Ranks, but doing it as a Rank 1 is almost unheard of,â Moxie said, crossing her arms. âIâve done it myself and find it very effective â though not effective as yours seem to be â but is it really viable for Rank 1 students? I was Rank 2 before I dared attempting it. Also, Imbuements draw energy from their original Runes. They're much more effective when you've got higher Rank runes with bigger capacities. Is it wise to restrict them now?â
Lee waggled a hand from side to side. âWith how many monsters they kill, their max Rune capacity will be filled back up in no time, and I think the drawback is more than worth it. Thereâs more to fighting than just magic. What do you think the most important trait for a warrior to have is?â
I didnât think weâd actually start the lesson today. Whoops. I hope nobody throws up. No point wasting good time, though. Good job, Lee!
âStrength?â Todd guessed.
âWrong,â Lee replied without missing a beat. âBad answer. Do better.â
Aaaand ruined. Damn it, Lee.
Noah sent Lee a sharp glare.
âUh⦠Iâm sure you can do better,â Lee corrected, clearing her throat. âAnyone else?â
It was Emily and Isabelâs turn to look at each other. Neither of them said anything.
âIntelligence,â Noah offered.
âThatâs a very good one too, but not the one I wanted you to say, so also wrong. The answer is flexibility. Having control of your body is what lets you make sure you avoid enemy attacks and land your own. It doesnât matter how hard you can swing a hammer when you can never land a blow.â
âWhat about the intelligence part? If you outsmart someone, they lose the fight before it starts,â Emily said.
âI am going to ignore that sentence,â Lee said with a frown. âMostly because Iâm not actually a very good teacher. Iâm sure Vermil or Moxie could give you a good, well thought out answer that explained things better. Iâm just good at hitting things, so thatâs what weâre going to do.â
âWeâre going to start now?â Isabel asked.
Lee nodded. âYep! Itâs going to be fun. For the next hour, weâre all going to get started with the routine that youâre going to begin doing every day.â
âWhat is it? A special technique?â Todd asked.
âStretching,â Lee replied with an evil grin. âI hope youâve got good pain tolerance.â
