It didnât take Aylin long to reveal just how little he knew about logistics â or anything streetlord related. Vrithâs stare bored into him, making it quite clear how evident his lack of understanding was.
âYou donât know the ranks and roles of your own people?â
âForget ranks,â Aylin said, throwing his hands up. âI donât even know their names.â
That only made her confusion grow even stronger. âWhy would you need to know their names?â
ââ¦so I know who Iâm talking to?â
âIt shouldnât matter. As long as you know what purpose they serve, a name is irrelevant. Names get you attached.â
âTheyâre part of my gang. Arenât I supposed to care about them or something like that?â
Vrith squinted at him. âWhy are you asking me? Youâre the streetlord.â
âSo are you,â Aylin pointed out.
âA streetlord that surrendered. You just didnât take my title from me for some reason.â Vrith shook her head. âWorst streetlord Iâve ever met.â
Aylin couldnât keep an exasperated sigh from escaping his mouth. He was beyond the point of worrying about pissing Vrith off. She was just as screwed as he was and he just didnât have the energy to walk on eggshells anymore.
âIâm going to come clean with you. I donât know what Iâm doing.â
âComing clean should imply that youâve got something to reveal. Youâre as transparent as a pane of glass,â Vrith said through a laugh, but Aylin didnât miss the unease that settled around Vrithâs shoulders and bore down on her neck. âThatâs an interesting way to break me. I didnât see it coming. Whereâs the real streetlord, then?â
âStill me,â Aylin said.
âWhat?â Vrith blinked and frowned. âIâm not following where this is going anymore. Are you the streetlord or not?â
âI just said. I am. I just have no idea what Iâm doing. Golon is dead, but I didnât kill him. Spider did. He just put me in charge.â
âIâd gathered that much. The part I donât get is why you know nothing. Your reaction speed should put you somewhere around low Rank 3. Iâve seen how fast youâve moved when you get startled. You canât get to that rank and be as clueless as youâre acting, so what gives?â
Aylin let out a short burst of laughter. It hardly mattered if he revealed how heâd become a Rank 3 to Vrith now. Sheâd find out at some point soon enough anyway. Spider had only told him not to share specifics, after all.
âI was Rank 1 about a day ago. Spider made me a Rank 3.â
âHe made you a Rank 3?â
âJust like that.â Aylin nodded. âDonât ask for more. I wonât say. But I was starving together with my siblings before he showed up. He killed Golon, took over the gang, then brought me to Rank 3 and said I was in charge so he wouldnât have to deal with it.â
âWhat the fuck? How powerful is Spider? What kind of demon can just⦠make a Rank 3 at will?â Vrith muttered. She swallowed heavily and realization set in on her features. âThatâs why you were close to a bunch of weak demons. You were the same as them just a short while ago.â
âYeah. And now Iâm this.â Aylin gestured vaguely around himself. âSo youâll have to forgive me if I have no damned idea what Iâm doing. Until recently, the only thing I knew about streetlords is that they were terrifying and to be avoided at all costs.â
Vrith tilted her head to the side and studied Aylinâs features for a few seconds. âAnd you havenât passed out from terror yet?â
âIâm working on it,â Aylin replied dryly. âGive me a little while for everything to catch up with me and I probably will. Itâs not like passing out will help anything.â
âI knelt at the feet of a street rat. How far I have fallen,â Vrith grumbled. Then she hesitated, an inscrutable expression replacing the annoyance. âWait. You came prepared to fight me? Did you truly believe that you had the slightest chance to defeat a trained warrior if youâve never been in a proper fight in your life?â
âIâve been in a proper fight! But no, I didnât think Iâd win. I was hoping youâd be a big hulking demon that I had a chance of outrunning, not⦠well, you.â
Very eloquent, Aylin. Well done.
âYou knew you were likely to die and you came anyway? You could have sent a second â or did you not know?â
âI knew, but I heard enough of your reputation to know that youâd just kill my second and kill me next. There was no reason to just waste someone like that, and I didnât want to force my siblings to watch me get killed. Besides, I always could have gotten lucky. You never know.â
The corner of Vrithâs lip curled up. âYes, I do. You would have died had we fought. You knew it too. I saw it in your eyes the moment we drew close. And yet you remained. Brave, for a street rat.â
âA streetlord,â Aylin corrected, a flicker of heat coursing through his chest as he held Vrithâs gaze. âIâm a street rat no more. I may not have deserved the gift, but I got it nonetheless.â
Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
To his surprise, Vrith inclined her head in acknowledgement. âA street lord indeed. Well spoken. How old are you? You seem more⦠apt than I would have expected.â
âNineteen. Violet and I used to be in a caravan and weâd read everything we could find. It helped. We had hopes of becoming merchants.â
âMerchants? Quite the change of path.â Vrithâs expression flickered. âYou do not look nineteen.â
âThe caravan got destroyed. Weâve been living on scraps for years, even before we got to Treadon. Itâs not really that much of a surprise that Iâm small when I havenât been able to get any energy. And you arenât that much taller than me.â
Vrith arched an eyebrow and took a step forward so they were chest-to-chest. She looked down at him, standing literally a full head taller. âReality begs to disagree.â
She had a point. Aylin cleared his throat and stepped back, catching a smirk as it flickered across Vrithâs features.
âYouâre like ten years older than me. Iâll catch up.â
âTen? Iâm twenty-one. Iâve worked quite hard to reach Rank 3 by this age, not to mention my position as Second of the Ravager gang, so Iâll thank you not toââ Vrith caught herself as she caught a small grin cross Aylinâs lips. She blinked and her eyes narrowed. âIt seems your fear of me has evaporated.â
âYou werenât as scary as I thought you were. Donât get me wrong, youâre still terrifying⦠but Spider and his group are scarier.â He paused for a moment as the rest of Vrithâs sentence processed and he tilted his head to the side. âWait. Second? You said you were streetlord.â
Vrith froze for an instant, but she recovered quickly. âI took over shortly before Leeâs arrival.â
Alin tasted falsehood in the air. It was so faint that he barely even picked up on it. He took a step closer to Vrith and sampled the air again. There was no doubt about it. Vrith was lying.
âThat⦠isnât true,â Aylin said slowly.
âYes it is. I am the streetlord of the Ravager gang.â
âNo, it isnât.â The taste was stronger now. âYou still think of yourself as the Second, donât you? Why? If youâd actually killed Vroth, youâd definitely imagine yourself to be the streetlord. Does that mean someone elseââ
Aylin didnât even see Vrith move. One moment, she was in front of him. The next, her hand was pressed against his mouth and her side pressed to his back.
âNot another word,â Vrith hissed â but it wasnât a threat. It was a plea. âPlease. You canât. I donât know how you know, but you canât say anything. Lee will kill both of us if you do.â
She pulled her hand away from his mouth and Aylin twisted to keep eye contact with her. Pushing farther probably wasnât the wisest move, but something tugged at his chest. A desire â a hunger â he couldnât quite place, but it was insatiable.
âTell me. I wonât tell anyone else,â Aylin promised. âYou have to follow my orders, donât you?â
Vrithâs jaw clenched. She glanced around the room.
âNobody is here. Iâd taste them. Or hear them. One of the two. Weâre alone.â
âFine,â Vrith said, speaking in little more than a nervous whisper. âYouâre right. Vroth challenged Lee when she showed up. Lee killed him. She was meant to kill the whole camp because he refused Spiderâs offer, then put his head up on a stake to show what happens to those that disobey Spider.â
âGods,â Aylin said. His stomach twisted with something new. He couldnât tell what it was, but it almost felt good. Satisfied. âWhat happened? How did you survive? A deal?ân/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
âBecause Lee made a mistake. She accidentally shredded Vrothâs head, so she couldnât stake it anymore.â Vrith glanced around the room once more, then managed to lower her voice even further. âWe agreed to pretend that Iâd killed him instead of her. I then obviously accepted the offer. It was that or death. But if Spider finds outâ¦â
The knotting sensation in Aylinâs stomach released, replaced by satisfaction. It almost felt like heâd just had a full meal. Vrithâs features twisted and she sent him a shocked look, taking a step back.
âDid you just steal my energy?â
âI â what? No. I was just curious. I didnât steal anything.â
âYes you did.â Vrith stared at Aylin, looking simultaneously offended and impressed as she let out a whistle. âShit. Youâre a knowledge demon.â
That feeling was me consuming Vrithâs energy?
Spiderâs forced advancement must have caused his Rune to advance to the point where he could start consuming energy naturally. Heâd always been inquisitive, but he hadnât imagined that heâd actually be able to consume knowledge.
Iâm also pretty sure itâs a huge taboo to steal energy unless youâre strong enough to justify it.
Aylinâs cheeks heated in embarrassment, but the more he thought about it, the more Vrithâs words made sense â and the more he wanted to consume more. He swallowed the feeling down and shook his head. âUh⦠sorry. You might be right. It was my first time.â
âIâm delighted to hear I was your first,â Vrith said dryly. She blew out a breath and shrugged. âWell, given the circumstances, I suppose losing a little power isnât too much to complain about. You really do need to work out how youâre going to put on a better front with any other Streetlords. I doubt Spider is going to have all of them on as many strings as I am. Theyâre going to figure you out in seconds. Iâll go back to my camp and handle all the shit that you shouldââ
âNo,â Aylin said. Two simultaneous thoughts struck him. The first was annoyance that he wouldnât learn whatever it was that Vrith was going to be doing. The second was an idea. âIâve got a better way to do this.â
Vrith tilted her head to the side. âOh?â
âStay here. Weâre in the same boat. We can help each other. Become my second.â
âYou mean you want to snack on my knowledge.â
âStreetlords get to choose how resources get distributed, donât they?â Aylin asked. âI could make up for that.â
Vrith held his gaze for a second. Then she crossed her arms. âIâve been a second for all my life. Who would choose to be a second over a streetlord? Even if itâs under you, Iâd still have an entire gang.â
âWhatâs better? Being one streetlord out of dozens, or being the second of the demon in charge of all of them?â
She let out a burst of laughter. âYou think Spiderâs going to put you in charge of every single gang? What happened to all that fear?â
âThis is the fear talking,â Aylin said. âDo you think I want this? I donât â but look at the facts. Lee sent you to me. Not to Spider. What does that mean for the other streetlords? They definitely had spotters watching us.â
Vrith hesitated for a second. Then she paled. âOh, shit. You might actually be right. But why would Spider put someone like you in charge of so much?â
Because itâs so far beneath him I literally donât think he cares. Weâre just one moving piece in whatever plan heâs got going.
âI donât know,â Aylin said, and a hunger gnawed at his stomach. âAnd, as much as Iâd love to find out, it changes nothing. Do you accept my offer or not?â
Vrithâs lips curled up and extended her hand. âYou make a very convincing offer, streetlord. One I find myself unable to refuse. I just hope youâre better than my late brother.â
Brother? Vroth was her brother? How is she even holding it together right now? Iâd be breaking down if Violet or one of the others had gotten murdered in front of me. Although it doesnât sound like she was very close with him.
Now I want to know why⦠but this isnât the time.
âMy name is still Aylin, not streetlord. I donât need an overinflated sense of ego,â Aylin said as he clasped Vrithâs arm. âAnd I canât make any promises, but I look forward to learning from you.â
