âDamned Plains, that was awesome!â Todd exclaimed, his stone armor dropping away as he strode up to examine the dead Fluffant. âYou carved it right in two!â
Alexandra shifted, wiping some of the Fluffantâs blood from her face and arms. âAll I did was kill it.â
No, that was definitely pretty awesome. Howâd she just stand there while it charged at her? Thatâs a lot of force to bear. Even if her blade was perfectly sharp, the halves of the Fluffant were still moving quickly and should have hit her. She pushed through them without budging. I didnât see Alexandra use a Shield or anything to reinforce herself, though.
âWhat kind of Runes let you do that?â Isabel asked, joining Todd. âOr was that just pure swordplay? I never knew you could do something like that.â
âIt wasnât just swordplay,â Alexandra said. âIt wasââ
âBody Runes.â Todd interrupted, looking up at Alexandra with a sparkle in his eyes. âYou use Body Runes, donât you?â
Alexandra blinked. âYou know them?â
âKnow them? Theyâre badass!â Todd exclaimed. âBody Runes are awesome! I mean, theyâre a huge risk, but theyâre incredible!â
Noah nudged Moxie and lowered his voice. âThe hell is a Body Rune?â
âItâs slang for when you completely Imbue yourself with a Rune to the point where itâs part of you,â Moxie replied in the same tone. âBasically, youâve got no energy left to pull from the Rune because all of it has been Imbued in your Body. It goes a very long way at making you resilient, but at a steep cost.â
âThat doesnât seem ideal. So you basically canât use magic, but youâre super infused with it?â
âPretty much.â Moxie nodded. âItâs not very common for that exact reason. Some soldiers will have a single Body Rune, but most of the time itâs better to leave at least something to work with. You canât remove Body Runes. As the name suggests, they get completely meshed with your body and they arenât even in your soul anymore â though they still take up a spot.â
Hardcore. Youâve got to be really committed to do that, then. And they also hard cap your growth. Canât advance past your current Rank if youâve got a Body Rune. Thatâs dark.
âHowâd you know I used a Body Rune?â Alexandra asked, studying Todd as if seeing him for the first time.
âYour body was hotter than it should have been, but I didnât see you using any magic. After that it was just a good guess. I used to know someone that used Body Runes as well, so Iâm a little familiar with them.â
âIt was definitely an impressive kill,â Noah said. âIâm surprised you were worried about a Shield if thatâs how you fight.â
âI didnât know what weâd be fighting, and Iâd rather be safe than sorry. I was only able to cut the Fluffant in half because I redirected most of the force. If it had a way to block my attack instead of charging right into it, I would have gotten crushed.â
I wonder what kind of Rune she uses to do that. Oddly enough, I remember her sword catching fire while we were fighting. I suppose that probably doesnât have anything to do with her Body Rune, so either itâs an artifact or she was just using a different Rune for that.
âHey, Alexandra also called it a Fluffant,â Lee said. âThatâs a majority. Theyâre renamed.â
Emily and James rolled their eyes in unison.
I wonder if Emily learned that from Moxie and then taught James, or if theyâre both just cut from the same cloth.
âWhatâs next?â Alexandra asked. âIs this all weâre going to do today?â
âOf course not,â Noah said, tapping his chin in thought. âI just wanted a general understanding of where everyone stood after the summer. It also gave me some time to see how things stood among all of you.â
âWhatâs that meant to mean?â Todd asked. âDonât tell me weâre getting even more training about how to work with others. Youâre the one that said we had to do this solo!â
âNot that, though itâs far from off the table.â Noah leaned in to whisper into Moxieâs ear. âHey, Iâve got a stupid idea.â
âWhat is it?â
âYouâre going to give someone the Master Rune, arenât you?â Lee asked, somehow picking up their words.
âYeah,â Noah said with a grin. âWe could always keep and sell it, but I think it might be better if we actually put it to use.â
âHow so?â Moxie asked. âIâm not against giving it away, but I thought we were going to wait for something.â
âOh, we are.â Noah turned away from her and back to the students. âRight. First â Alexandra, do you mind if I ask what rank your Runes are?â
âThree,â Alexandra said. The other students all stared at her in shock, and she blinked. âIs something wrong?â
âYouâre as strong as Vermil,â Todd said with a bark of laughter. âThat brings back memories.â
âNo, Iâm not.â Alexandra squinted at Noah. âNot even close. We fought once, and he wiped the floor with me while he wasnât even trying to kill me.â
âThat was extenuating circumstances.â Noah shook his head. âNever mind that. I was just curious as to how far along you were. It should be fine either way.â
âAre we competing for something?â Emily asked, squinting at Noah.
âYes.â Moxie held a hand out. The stone beneath her swirled up, racing to cover her body and encase her in a layer of armor. âThis.â
âAn Earth Rune?â Todd asked.
âAn Earth Master Rune,â Moxie corrected. âWe got it while adventuring right before we got back to Arbitage. âOne that Iâd say fits several of your fighting styles. It lets you call the earth to you and form armor â Iâd imagine it does more too, but I havenât really experimented with it much yet.â
Todd and Isabel exchanged a shocked glance and Alexandraâs eyes nearly bulged out of her head. âYouâre just⦠giving it away? A Master Rune?â
âWell, not every Master Rune is that powerful. Theyâre just rare. And Iâm not just giving it away. Youâll be earning it.â
âThat makes them expensive,â James said, staring in disbelief. âEven a relatively useless Master Rune is going to be a few thousand gold. Whatâs it a reward for?â
âWinning the most,â Noah said. âIn addition to normal classes, weâll be sparring whenever we have time. Every fight will be different. Some will be against me, and some will be against your fellow students. Weâll keep track of who claims the most victories and, when the exercise is over, Iâll give them the Master Rune.â
âThat does put Alexandra at a pretty huge advantage,â Isabel said with a frown.
âSheâs never fought with or against any of you,â Noah said. âIn terms of power, Alexandra is considerably more powerful. But there are a few things to keep in mind. First â you know each other. She doesnât. Second, I never said youâd all be fighting on your own.â
âWeâll be in teams,â Isabel realized.
âSometimes, yes. And the objective of the training exercise isnât always going to be a direct victory.â
Todd started to grin. âThat sounds fun. So itâs basically a bunch of games?â
âThatâs one way to look at it,â Noah said.
âAm I allowed to participate as well?â James asked. âYou arenât technically my official teacher.â
âFeel free,â Noah said. âMore competition is better. Itâll push everyone to improve.â
âIâm still not sure how weâre supposed to compete with a Rank 3, but sure.â Emily crossed her arms. âWhen do we start?â
âNow.â Noah glanced over to Lee. âYou feeling up to help out?â
Lee tilted her head to the side. âMe? Yeah. Iâm just a bit hungry.â
âAs expected, then. How do you feel about playing a game?â
A mischievous spark lit in her eyes. âWhat kind?â
âTag,â Noah replied. âFor the next few hours, everyone other than Moxie and I are going to be hunting you. Their goal will be to land a hand on you â and your job will be to avoid them. For now, you canât fight back. You can only run.â
âSounds fun. Iâm in.â
âGreat. The first to catch Lee gets a point. Everyone else loses.â Noah clapped his hands together and grinned. âGood luck.â
The dirt beneath Lee erupted as she burst into motion, flashing toward the sheer rock face behind them and bounding into the air. She slammed into it, pausing for only an instant before racing straight up the wall and disappearing from view in seconds.
âYouâre kidding me,â Emily said. âWeâll never catch her. Sheâs too fast.â
Noah shrugged. âThatâs your problem. Do what you want â weâll be in the Windscorned Plateau for the rest of the day, and you all lose if you donât catch her by the time we get pulled back.â
Emily opened her mouth, but she paused as Alexandra sprinted away from the group, following in Leeâs footsteps. She jumped onto the rock face and started to climb it â not moving nearly as fast as Lee had, but still at a respectable pace.
Kind of what I expected. Sheâs strong, and I doubt sheâs had anyone look out for her in recent memory if she was in with Gentilâs lot. Youâre never going to catch Lee working on your own, though.
Todd and Isabel turned to each other.
âDo you want the Rune?â Todd asked.
âYeah, but I think you do too,â Isabel replied. âWe canât both have it, but donât let me catch you going easy on me. Good luck.â
âYou too.â Todd bent his legs and his armor reformed over his body. An explosion set off beneath his feet and he was off, racing in pursuit of the other two.
James shimmered and vanished from view as he used his light magic to turn himself invisible. Emily and Isabel both took off as well, racing to catch up with everyone else. Noah watched them leave, his arms crossed.
âShould we be worried about them running into monsters?â Moxie asked.
âNah. Lee will keep an eye on them, and we just saw that all of âem can easily handle the Fluffants. Iâm confident theyâll be fine â and a little pressure is still needed to improve. But, just to be safe, we should probably follow after them. I donât want someone slipping up and getting killed.â
He drew his flying sword and tossed it to the ground. Moxie stepped onto it and Noah got on behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist. Before he could send magic into the blade, Moxie leaned back and turned to give him a quick kiss on the cheek.
âThat was a pretty clever way to motivate them. Youâre planning to make them realize they canât do this on their own â but since Isabel and Todd are in direct competition, they canât work together on this one. That means theyâll have to form different partnerships if they want to win.â
âThanks,â Noah said, giving her a gentle squeeze. âAnd now Iâm going to need to figure out more interesting lesson plans if I get a kiss for the good ones.â
Moxie snorted. âDonât get used to it.â
Chuckling, Noah sent magic into the sword. It hummed to life and they shot off the ground in hot pursuit of Lee and the students.
âDo you think any of them actually have a chance to catch Lee?â Moxie called over the wind as it whistled past their faces.
âProbably not as things are, but thatâs the interesting part.â Noah squinted down at the line of kids racing across the plateau below them. âEither they adapt and find a new way to approach this â or they fail. Either way, itâll help expose where theyâre all weak. And, more importantly, itâll be fun to watch.â
