Lee sat on the curved top of the guest house, her legs stretched out before her as she watched the clouds move through the sky. It was chilly, but she wasnât cold. A faint smoldering energy burned within her soul, seeping out into her body and keeping the chill at bay.
An ember swirled at Leeâs side, expanding out into Azelâs suited form with a small puff of smoke. âFancy finding you here. You must be bored.â
âNot really,â Lee replied, not looking in Azelâs direction. There was currently a pie-shaped cloud floating overhead, and it was considerably more interesting than the other demon at the time.
Azel didnât seem perturbed by her dismissal. âYouâre fine with this, then? Sitting around on watch while they have fun?â
Lee shrugged. âI have fun too. Itâs selfish to demand attention all the time. Iâll get my turn to get my Runes modified soon. I still need to figure out what Iâm going to do to fix them. Again.â
âSelfish?â Azel was aghast. âAre you a demon, girl? Selfish? Of course you are!â
âNah.â
âI â what?â
âNah.â
âYou canât just say nah. You are a demon.â Azelâs eyes narrowed and he scooted along the roof to sit in front of Lee, who rotated around to look the other direction.
âBeing a demon doesnât mean I have to be a dick,â Lee said. âYouâre the reason Moxie thought all demons were evil.â
âEvil is a term that the weak use to describe someone that does not behoove themselves to cowardly beliefs. We are not evil. We are powerful.â
âYou are. You donât get to decide what I am,â Lee corrected. âIâm Lee.â
A small puff of smoke rose up from Azelâs smoldering features. He pressed his lips together and shook his head. âYou are deluded. Somewhere, you lost your way as a demon. Why do you allow them to treat you like this?â
âLike what?â Lee cocked her head to the side.
âSee? This is the problem! You canât even tell whatâs wrong!â
âNeither can you. Youâre just trying to annoy me. Annoying things is my job, and I like it that way.â
Azel ran his hands through his hair. âNoah and Moxie are flirting in her mindspace, Iâm sure of it. And youâre fine with just sitting here?â
âYep. Why wouldnât I be?â
Azel stared at her. âAre you dense?â
âOnly when I want to be. Why would I care if they smell like each other? I like them.â
For once, Azel seemed to be at a loss for words â at least, he was for a few seconds. He quickly recovered himself and sent Lee a smug look. âBecause you arenât there with them.â
âThatâs fine. Iâll be there later. They need time alone just as much as everyone else does.â
âYouâre kidding me. Youâre okay with giving Noah away like this? You love him! You said it yourself.â
âGiving him away?â Leeâs brow furrowed. âWhat do you mean? Heâs not an object. Nobody can take or give him. And you can love lots of people. Moxie said so.â
âThatâs different.â Azel latched onto the line, his eyes intensifying as the flame within them burned brighter. âEven a fool could see that theyâre in love. There isnât going to be any room for you if that happens. If you donât stop it.â
Lee nodded thoughtfully. âOh, yeah. Moxie talked about that. Romantic love. Thatâs fine, though.â
Azel practically choked on the air. âWhat?â
âThere are 2 kinds of love,â Lee said, holding two fingers up. âRomantic and platonic.â
âExactly. And thereâs only room for the two of them in romance.â Azel crossed his arms in front of his chest. âLeave things as they are, and youâll be pushed aside. Thatâs why you need toââ
âNope.â
âStop that. You canât just say no.â
âYes I can. Youâre wrong. There are two kinds of love, remember? The other one is the one between friends. Itâs no better or worse than romantic love â itâs just a different kind. Thatâs what we have.â
âDo you really believe that?â Azel demanded. âYou donât think theyâll throw you to the side? Youâre a demon, Lee. Once theyâve used you up, theyâll toss you to the side. You need to be proactive. You canât just sit here and do nothing.â
âYou know what?â Lee turned to meet Azelâs eyes. âI think youâre unhappy.â
Fire flared across Azelâs face before slipping back under his skin and vanishing into his suit. âYouâve completely lost it.â
âThen youâre just trying to cause trouble.â Lee glared at Azel. âItâs not going to work. I smell your lies â and Iâm sure you know I can. If Iâm wrong and you arenât just lonely and bitter, what are you getting out of this?â
âI am trying to help you,â Azel snarled. âDemon to demon. We arenât in the Damned Plains right now. We have to look out for one another, at least until the time comes when weâre strong enough that we donât need the help. Iâm just trying to fix your course.â
âYouâre trying to fix something that isnât broken.â
âSays the demon that doesnât even know what emotion she feeds off.â Azel stood and brushed his hands off before straightening his suit and looking down the bridge of his nose at Lee. âAt least I know who I am.â
âI do know who I am, though.â
âIs that so? Tell me, then. Who are you?â
âLee.â
âThatâs the name Noah gave you. Itâs not who you are.â
âI am who I decide I am. And, for all your complaints that I donât know what emotion I feed off, I feel perfectly happy. On the other hand, youâre miserable. It smells so strong that I couldnât miss it if I wanted to. So â between the two of us â who really doesnât know themselves?â
Azel ground his teeth. âIt wonât last. The only thing that lasts is power. Put your faith in others and theyâll rip you to shreds if they betray you. A demon can only rely on themselves.â
âIf.â
âWhat?â
âYou said if,â Lee pointed out. âAnd part of having friends is believing in them. I wouldnât be friends with them if I didnât trust them. For all that power youâre talking about, youâre still trapped inside Noahâs soul. And, if you try to take revenge when you come out, weâll kill you.â
âAs if you could stand against me.â Azel let out a bassy chuckle. âIâd rip you to shreds.â
âMe, sure. Me and Moxie, maybe. Me, Moxie, and Noah, less likely. And if we had Silvertide and Revin as well? Who knows. Weâve got friends, Azel. Youâre alone. You donât have to be, though. If you didnât constantly choose to be a dick, you could have friends too.â
âYou understand nothing. Everything that comes out of your mouth is tainted by the folly of youth that should be reserved for stupid humans, not demons.â
âAnd everything that you say seems like youâre scared,â Lee countered. âWhy are you here, Azel? Iâve never heard anything about demons trying to help each other out. Iâm not stupid. I can tell you want something. Youâd have better luck just asking me for it than all this roundabout stuff.â
âEven if I did, it would be pointless. Youâre lost,â Azel spat. âNo demon left in you at all. Giving you my Runes was a waste.â
âDoes that mean youâll give up on whatever this is?â
Azel sent Lee a cold smile. âNo. Youâll come to see the truth soon enough. Weâre demons. Moxie was right about one thing â we are the same. Youâre just like me.â
âYou know, the more you say that, the less I believe you.â Lee stood up as well. Even though she stood more than a head shorter than Azel, she matched his gaze without flinching. âYou came to talk to me because Noah and Moxie made you feel how youâre saying I should, didnât they? Youâre lonely.â
âLonely?â Azel cackled. âMe? A Rank 5 Demon, lonely? On the contrary. I long for solitude more than anything else. I have been subjected to this⦠vile company for far too long.â
âRight,â Lee drawled. âI donât believe you. I think you wanted to talk to someone and were fed up with getting told to screw off, so you came here. But, you donât know how to just talk to someone normally, so you tried to rile me up and get emotions out of me. Isnât that right?â
âYou are wrong. Completely and utterly wrong.â
âYou say that, but I know how it feels to be hungry. Iâm usually hungry.â Leeâs stomach rumbled, proving her point. âBut you canât feel love toward food. It tastes good, but you canât love it, because it canât love you back.â
Azel gave her a blank stare, baffled. âWhat is that meant to mean?â
âFigure it out yourself,â Lee replied. âBut if you keep trying to get us to hate each other â well, first, it wonât work. But if youâre the demon you claim to be that only looks out for himself and nobody else, then you should realize that youâre going to stay unhappy if you donât change.â
Azel smoldered. His entire body shimmered in a haze of heat, but it didnât expand far enough to reach Lee. It was nothing but showmanship. She was pretty sure Azel physically wasnât even there with her â her Runes were running hot.
Heâs using the Runes he gave me to form a basic connection. Not enough to do anything but talk. It would be pretty easy to just cut them off and force him away, but then heâd go bother Noah and Moxie.
Azel didnât respond. His body burnt away, turning into smoke and fading into the air. Lee watched the space where heâd been for a few moments, then returned her attention to the clouds passing by above.
She felt bad for Azel. Sheâd been on the Damned Plains for around twenty years. Heâd been on them for hundreds. The idea of being trapped in the hellscape for that long, without friends or anyone to speak to, filled her with dread.
I wonder if Iâd be just like him if Iâd been there for all that time. I just wish heâd stop trying to manipulate everyone. If he keeps this up, weâre going to have to find a way to kill him.
Lee sat back down at the roof and returned her gaze to the sky, trying to see if she could spot any more shapes floating within them. But, to her annoyance, the clouds had pulled back during her conversation with Azel. All that remained was clear sky.
Letting out a sigh, Lee tapped her fingers against her chin. It wouldnât be long until Moxie and Noah finished up working on the runes. Hopefully, theyâd be successful. But, even if they werenât, Lee refused to let Azel dampen her mood.
A sudden weight settled down on Leeâs lap. She looked down in surprise to find that Mascot had somehow completely evaded both her eyes and nose to curl up on top of her. The catâs red antlers shimmered with energy as it let out a low purr.
Lee stared at Mascot for a few seconds, then repressed a snicker. The cat looked up at her, as if to ask whatâs so funny?
âI was looking at clouds that kind of look like things,â Lee said. âBut youâre a thing that kind of looks like a cloud.â
Mascot sniffed. The cat curled up, entirely unamused by Leeâs joke. There wasnât going to be any more moving now, so all she could do was wait. Fortunately, that had been her plan anyway.
