âYou canât just say that and leave it there,â Moxie said, crossing her arms. âExplain.â
âI think Lee pretty much summarized it already,â Noah said as he rubbed the back of his head. âI come back to life after I die.â
Moxieâs eye twitched.
âOops,â Lee said, shifting her feet uncomfortably. âI thought that was what you meant when you said that youâd told her everything. Sorry.â
âI was getting to it. Itâs fine,â Noah replied.
âIt most certainly is not,â Moxie said. âHow is that even possible? You arenât a Rank 9. Only the gods are immortal. Or are you claiming thatââ
âIâm not a god,â Noah said with a chuckle. âAnd Iâm not immortal. I just come back to life after I die. Thereâs a difference. Immortal people just donât die. Invulnerable people canât get hurt. I can do both â I just donât stay that way.â
âRight,â Moxie said, giving him a dry stare. âAnd you just⦠what, magically get a new body?â
âYup.â
âAnd you leave the old one behind?â
Noah nodded.
âSo how does the new one form?â
âMagic.â
Moxie glared at Noah. âThatâs not how it works. You donât get something from nothing. Thatâs in the realm of Rune Force, and thatâs still just manifesting the powers of your Rune without having something to kick them off. You canât just magically pop out a new body.â
âIâll be honest, thereâs a whole lot I donât understand,â Noah admitted. âThe exact manner in which I got a new body wasnât really as much as a mystery to me as the part where I came back to life, and there isnât really much information about this kind of stuff. Itâs not something I can research, you know.â
âOkay, thatâs a fair point,â Moxie admitted, but she didnât look like she liked any of the words leaving her mouth. âIâm half tempted to test this claim of yours out right here.â
âPlease donât,â Leeâs features drooped. âThe last time he died, it took forever for him to come back. I donât want Vermil to die. I think his powers might be going away.â
Noah chuckled and ruffled Leeâs hair. âIâm fine, Lee. My powers arenât going to go away. Iâm not going anywhere. I just took a lot of soul damage. It made reforming really slow, I think.â
âBut soul damage takes forever to fix!â Lee exclaimed. âIt could take you years to properly recover!â
âTry three weeks.â Noah couldnât keep the smug grin from crossing his features. âI found a way to completely repair my soul. It⦠might not be sustainable, but thereâs potential. Either way, Iâm totally fine now and not in any risk. I can go back to getting myself killed as much as I want.â
âTo me, it sounds like you want me to kill you,â Moxie said suspiciously. âAre you a masochist?â
âYouâre sure youâre okay?â Lee asked, ignoring Moxie and staring up at Noah. âYou arenât lying?â
âIâm fine, I promise.â
Moxie let out a huff. She sat down in her chair and shook her head. âIs there anything else you want to tell me? I feel like Iâm going to have a heart attack at any moment, and unless you can pass that revival magic of yours over, Iâm not going to be coming back from it.â
âNo. Nothing related to my Runes or abilities, at least. The only other stuff is more personal,â Noah said, a heavy weight lifting off his chest. He hadnât realized quite how heavily hiding just about every part of the truth behind his powers had been weighing on him, but it felt nice to have people he could trust â though he wasnât quite finished yet. âLee, I know youâve probably gathered a lot of this, but thereâs a little more about me that I think you deserve to know.â
Lee tilted her head to the side. âMore?â
âShe doesnât know either? Gods,â Moxie let out a quick laugh. âMaybe Iâll get to see what my own face looked like when you told me.â
âFirst, is anyone near?â Noah asked. âWhere are the kids?â
âTheyâre waiting outside,â Lee replied.
âMy room has some basic defenses against eavesdropping that I had imbued,â Moxie said. Her cheeks reddened slightly and she looked down. âFrom when I had to report. I didnât want anyone to overhear for obvious reasons. They only go down when I want them to, and theyâre active at the moment.â
âYouâre amazing,â Noah said with a grin. He turned to Lee. âThen I can say this without worrying. I can fix your Runes, Lee. The imperfect ones â I can repair them.â
Lee studied Noah silently. âMaking new ones, yeah. I know thatâs a possibility. Getting rid of Runes you didnât combine yourself isnât too bad, but tossing ones you combined yourself takes chunks of your soul out â and I made a lot of my Runes. I donât thinkââ
Noah shook his head. âNo. I can fix those Runes too. At least, I know Iâll be able to in the future. Iâd need to reach Rank 3 first, and Iâd need a way to actually access them, but I know both of those issues can be solved.â
âI⦠donât understand,â Lee said slowly. âHow can you fix my Runes without giving me massive amounts of soul damage? Something about your soul is different from mine, you know. And donât forget that, as a demon, my Runes are closely bound to my body. Soul damage is much worse for me than it is for you.â
âI know, Lee. That doesnât change what I said. I can take Runes apart and rework them as long as I have other, lower tier Runes to replace the less than ideal combination pieces.â
Leeâs eyes widened. âThat⦠are you sure? My Runes are pretty bad. I didnât have any time or way to test my combinations to make sure they were good, so theyâre pretty broken.â
âDoesnât matter how broken they are. Iâll be able to fix them when I reach Rank 3,â Noah said with a grin. âIn the meantime â and this goes for both you and Moxie â youâll need to get Rank 2 or 1 Runes that you think will work better in your combinations than the current ones. If you start now, then by the time I reach Rank 3, we might be able to take care of everything in one fell swoop.â
Lee and Moxie exchanged a glance.
âYouâre sure heâs okay?â Lee asked nervously. âDidnât hit his head too hard or anything?â
âHeâs just as stupid as he normally is,â Moxie confirmed. âBut heâs in normal health, as far as I can tell. Maybe we should just kill him to reset things, just in case.â
âHey!â Noah exclaimed. âI avoid dying for stupid reasons.â
As soon as the sentence left his mouth, he realized it was a terrible idea and sealed his lips, but it was too late. A smug light lit up behind Moxieâs eyes and she raised an eyebrow.
âOh? So why did you leave a corpse around in your room?â
It was Noahâs turn for his cheeks to redden. âAh⦠I was working on something. Trying to heal my soul.â
âBy killing yourself?â
âI am going to decide not to answer this line of questioning any further,â Noah proclaimed. âNo more, I say. I canât be forced to incriminate myself. It was all for a good cause.â
He saw the sharkish grins on Lee and Moxieâs faces at the opening heâd left and quickly cleared his throat. The one thing he hadnât been planning on was to get teamed up on by the two of them.
âThe kids have been waiting a while, you know. We should let them in. I think I need to have a chat with them as well.â
âAre you going to tell them everything?â Moxie asked, a flicker of worry passing over her features. âI donât want Emily to get wrapped too deeply in something dangerous.â
Despite everything the Torrin family has done to her, she still cares about Emily. Damn, Moxie. I wonder if Iâd be as kind if I were in her position. And I wonder of Emily knows just how her family has treated Moxie. Emily really seems to care for Moxie, so it would probably devastate her.
As if Moxie could read the look on Noahâs face, she narrowed her eyes and poked him in the chest.
âDonât say a word about what happened today in the garden.â
Leeâs eyebrows shot up and a knowing grin stretched across her lips. âOh? What happened in the garden?â
âStop that,â Noah said curtly. âI just threatened to kill someone.â
Leeâs mouth dropped open. âWithout me?â
âFocus, please,â Moxie said, snapping her fingers as if they were a pair of children. âThe kids are waiting outside. What are we telling them?â
âWell, Isabel and Todd already know that I come back to life,â Noah said. âAnd they havenât combined any Runes yet. I think Iâll eventually tell them, but Moxieâs right â knowing about what I can do with Runes will only put them at more risk. Itâs not right to tell them yet.â
Lee and Moxie nodded.
âIâll let them in, then,â Moxie said. She stepped past Noah and pulled the door open. Almost instantly, Isabel and Todd started pelting her with questions.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
âWhereâs Professor Vermil?â Isabel demanded. âIs he okay? Why wonât you let us see him?â
âWhyâd Lee run in?â Todd asked. âWhatâs going on?â
âCalm down,â Moxie said, moving back so they could see into the room. âVermil is fine. Heâs fully recovered. Thereâs nothing to worry about, but why donât you just come inside so you can see for yourselves?â
Isabel and Todd pushed inside. Their eyes lit up as they spotted Noah standing of his own volition beside Lee. Emily followed them inside, not quite as excited but still looking relieved.
âProfessor!â Isabel exclaimed. She paused, gathering herself and quickly wiping most of the relief from her face. âI thought you were bedridden.â
âI survived,â Noah said with a wry smile. âIâm sorry for making you worry. Iâve been told I was out of it for a while.â
Todd nodded empathetically and winced, pressing a hand to his neck and letting out a slight grunt of pain. âBrayden carried you like a bag of potatoes all the way back. He fought monsters with one hand. It was incredible. Iâm glad youâre still alive, Professor. Iâd hate if we had to find a new teacher.â
âI do tend to prefer myself alive as well,â Noah said. âIs your neck okay, Todd?â
Toddâs lips pressed thin and he shrugged, letting a smile cross his features. âBetter than being snapped, yeah. Not perfect though. It still feels a bit off, especially when I make sharp motions. I didnât exactly have the highest quality healing potion, and there can be side effects sometimes. I survived, right?â
A failure on my part. He shouldnât have been injured at all.
âWeâll figure something out,â Noah promised. âDid Brayden say anything else about what happened? Where is he now?â
âHe just left right after dropping you off,â Isabel said. She wrung her hands together, then caught herself and lowered them back to her sides.
She really does try to put on a calm front, but I think sheâs too scared to show that she cares again. After losing her family to a bunch of bastards, I canât blame her. Itâs probably her coping mechanism. I wish I knew more psychology so I could actually help her.
Noah realized that he hadnât responded and had been standing silently for a few moments. He let a worried frown cross his face. âI hope heâs fine.â
âHeâs a badass,â Todd said confidently. âHeâll be okay.â
âHold on. Weâre going too fast,â Emily said, squinting at Noah. âHow are you moving around already? Did Moxie get something from our family to heal you? I know it wasnât your family â Brayden said we shouldnât trust them. Why arenât you still bedbound?â
