Moxie stared at the green scroll before her like it was made of solid gold. She raised her gaze to Noah. âYou didnât answer the question. Do youââ
âEvergreenâs scroll,â Noah said with a chuckle. âShe was so careless as to lose it. Unfortunate for her. Fortunate for me. There are a bunch of plant based Runes on there. I bet a lot of them would be useful to you, right? Like the Bleeding Forest or Thorned Vine Swarm â both of those were Rank 3s.â
Moxie swallowed. Desire and fear played together in her eyes. âI â I canât. Even if I dared to take one of these, do you know how much theyâre worth?â
âDonât care,â Noah replied. âNever cared much about money. And itâs not like I can actually sell them. People can tell where the Runes are from, and if I go around selling these as a Linwick, someoneâs probably going to suspect somethingâs up, right?â
Moxie gave him a slow nod. âYeah, thatâs true. Itâs difficult to tell the origin of Runes, but there are talented mages that can scan your Runes when you use them and figure out where they originate. But, if theyâre on a piece of paper, itâs easier. Selling them would probably be hard if you didnât go through official channels or have someone that trusts you to sell to.â
âSoâ¦â
Moxie bit her lower lip. âI would have to give up one of my other Runes, but some of these are definitely better than mine. They arenât exactly in line with what I was planning to do, though.â
âI can fix that as well.â
Moxieâs eye twitched. âWhat, can you just magically transform Runes into exactly what you want them to be?â
âSomething like that, just with a lot more effort.â
âIs there anything you canât do?ân/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
Stay dead, I guess.
Moxie saw Noah pause and let out a huff. âDonât even answer that. I take it back. Let me focus on this for a few moments. I thought youâd gotten the biggest stuff out of the way and were just hamming it up. Can I really have one of these?â
âAs many as you want. Theyâre useless to me,â Noah replied. He paused and tilted his head to the side. âOkay, not useless. But Iâd rather they get used now than sit around doing nothing. I should warn you that Iâm not going to be too useful on Rank 3 Runes unless youâre willing to lose a lot of progress. Not yet, at least.â
âYou⦠thatâs how youâre doing it? You canât control Rank 3 Runes because youâre Rank 2, right? Then that means youâre somehow breaking Runes down into their smaller components?â
Wow, she put that together really quickly. I thought it would have taken at least a bit more information to put the puzzle together.
Noah nodded. âYes.â
âIâm not even going to ask how,â Moxie said, looking back down at the scroll. She lasted about a second before she looked back up at him. âOkay. Iâm going to ask how. Can I do it too?â
âNo,â Noah replied with a shake of his head. âItâs something only I can do, Iâm afraid.â
âMight be better that way,â Moxie said with a relieved sigh. âNow I really will just leave it there. I think Iâve got a pretty good guess as to whatâs letting you do it if youâre the only one that can â and you need to be absolutely sure nobody ever finds out. Thatâs the kind of thing people kill for.â
âYouâre the first person Iâve told.â
Moxie paused. âNot even Lee?â
âShe knows other things that I havenât gotten around to telling you yet, but not this. Iâm going to tell her when she and the kids get back. Sheâs earned that much.â
Moxie gave Noah a small smile. âThank you for trusting me. I swear I wonât let you down. Can I reallyââ
âJust take the damn Rune youâre looking at,â Noah said with a laugh. âYou can swap it out for one of the Runes you currently have. Itâll be useful to me in the long run.â
Moxie nodded. She pressed her hand to an open spot in the paper â there werenât many, but there was still enough to fit an extra Rune or two. Moxie closed her eyes and slipped into her mindspace.
Noah waited, watching her curiously as she Imbued a Rune. Unlike his students, Moxie clearly had a lot of experience with moving Runes around. She Imbued a Rune within a few seconds, then only took a little while longer to draw in one of the Runes from the scroll.
Moxie opened her eyes and handed the scroll back to Noah. A quick glance revealed that Moxie had taken the Bleeding Forest rune, and sheâd placed a Writhing Vine Rune in its place â it was also a Rank 3 Rune, but Noah could tell it was quite full by the amount of energy coming off it.
âWant more?â Noah asked.
Moxie shook her head. âItâll take a lot of energy to fill this new Rune up, and that was my worst Rune that wasnât too ingrained into my soul. Replacing more would risk serious soul damage. If youâre still trying to give them out for free when Iâve got this one full, I might take you up on it. But, otherwise, I might just have to wait until you hit Rank 3. If you can fix my other Runes, I donât want to push to Rank 4 with a less than ideal combination.â
âI thought as much,â Noah said with a chuckle. He rolled the scroll back up and slipped it into his bag. âTo be honest, itâll likely be the same for Lee. Iâm well on my way to reaching Rank 3, but Iâve still got to finish getting my last few Runes and filling them up. I guess now is a great time to do that, since weâve got to get prepared for the survival exam.â
Moxie scooted forward and swung her legs down from the bed, standing up and adjusting her uniform, smoothing out the crumples that sheâd earned in her sleep. âThatâs a good idea. With everything thatâs happening, we need to make sure the students still pass the survival exam. We both have a duty.â
âAbout that,â Noah said, taking a pause before speaking again. âWhatâs up with Emily?â
Moxieâs brow furrowed. âWhat do you mean?â
âYouâre being forced to do this, arenât you? But you seem to care about her. Do you want to be a teacher or not?â
A grimace passed over Moxieâs face and she looked out the window, pulling her eyes away from Noah. âEmily isnât responsible for what the rest of the Torrin family did. Sheâs not that much younger than me, but sheâs got a good future. Thereâs no reason for me to interfere with that. Iâll just do the best I can to teach her and keep her safe.â
âIâm still a little confused on that bit. Why is she so much weaker than you if youâre both pretty close to the same age?â
âWell, Iâm a few years older,â Moxie said. âBut itâs because they donât want to risk anyone from main branch. I wasnât the only person they had planned to raise as a guardian for Emily. They put me through rigorous classes and training â nothing like what a soldier does, as that takes a lot more time, but enough to keep her safe and advance quickly. Then, with slightly subpar runes, I was able to reach higher ranks faster. Add that with the constant tutelage and no free timeâ¦â
âThatâs pretty screwed up. Did you even have a childhood?â
âI survived. What else could I do?â
Noah winced. âI guess that wasnât a very polite question. Sorry. I guess youâll just have to make up for that missed time, then. Maybe we can take the kids somewhere once the survival exam is over. Is there a break in schooling at some point? Between years.â
âYes, thereâs a two month break where students return to their families. Itâll be right after the survival exam.â
âPerfect,â Noah said with a grin. âThen weâll have some fun then.â
âYouâre assuming we survive that long. Do I have to remind you that both the Linwicks and the Torrins have reason to hate us, and thereâs still a Rank 5 demon somewhere around the school that isnât going to be as nice as you or Lee?â
âThose sound like problems that Iâm going to ignore until something happens to make me address them,â Noah replied with a shrug. âIâve got a lot of those. No point stressing over what you canât control. I do wish I figured out what Fatherâs angle with the demon was, though.â
âClarify?â
âI think Vermilâs dad â the guy that originally had him trying to summon a demon â ordered a hit on me. Thatâs why we got attacked. At least, I think it was him. I donât know who else it could have been, and I have no proof either way.â
Moxie nodded thoughtfully. âInquisitors are similar to soldiers, but they typically focus on fighting specific enemies that theyâve trained for â such as demons. Theyâre not easy to get a hold of, so whoever called them wasnât a slouch.â
âSo they were a good anti-demon plan. That does suck, as my main plan of going to the Linwick Estate was figuring out how to deal with the Rank 5 demon. I canât really just call a bunch of Inquisitors here, theyâll go after Lee. And me.â
âAnd you?â Moxie raised an eyebrow.
âThey seem to think Iâm a demon.â
âSo you say youâre a demon. The Inquisitors think youâre a demon. Butâ¦â
âIâm not,â Noah finished with a nod. âIâm glad you get it.â
Moxie shook her head and laughed. âWhatever you are, calling the Inquisitors is definitely a terrible idea. They arenât known for taking half measures.â
âWhich means weâre going to need a new way to kill the Rank 5 demon,â Noah concluded. âThen again, itâs been quite a while. Maybe it just left.â
Moxie gave him a flat stare. âAre you usually that lucky?â
Noah rubbed his chin. âDepends on your definition of luck.â
âWell, until you know for sure the demon is gone, Iâd continue acting as if itâs an immediate threat. Weâll just focus on doing the survival training away from the school for as long as possible. The final location of the actual exam hasnât been decided yet, so as long as it isnât too close to Arbitage, itâll probably be fine.â
âSounds good to me. Do you know when they get back?â Noah asked.
âTomorrââ Moxie cut herself off. âWait, no. Today. I got distracted with everything that happened. Lee said sheâd back sometime today, so it shouldnât be too much longer.â
Noah hopped to his feet as well. âThey⦠arenât going to check my room, are they?â
âLee probably will. Why?â Moxie asked. âWeâve been checking on it periodically to make sure itâs safe. Why?â
âThere might be something in there,â Noah replied, clearing his throat.
âWhat?â
âA corpse.â
Moxieâs eye twitched. âIâm sorry? You killed someone?â
Before Noah could respond, the door clicked. Noah and Moxie both tensed, realizing theyâd forgotten to lock it behind them. It swung open, revealing Leeâs irritated face.
âVermil,â Lee said, striding inside and thrusting an accusatory finger in his face. âYou have a problem. Are you capable of keeping yourself from doing something stupid for longer than a week at a time? You were bedridden when we left!â
âIt was for a good cause,â Noah said. âI healed myself!â
Lee glanced at Moxie, clearly not wanting to say too much on accident.
âItâs fine,â Noah said. âShe knows just about everything now.â
âAbout time,â Lee said with a huff. âNow she can scold you for leaving your corpses everywhere. Canât you at least wait until Iâm back? You nearly traumatized Isabel and Todd again! Itâs a good thing I made them wait outside when I checked your room.â
âFor leaving what?â Moxie demanded.
âOkay, now she knows everything.â Noah gave them a sheepish grin.
