âSee you soon.â
Piper didnât know about that. She rarely visited her doctor between physicals. Of course, if she was pregnant, that would have to change, wouldnât it?
Chapter Six ZEPHYR was waiting for her when she came out. âHow did it go?â
âA little prick, a bandage and we were done.â It seemed like something awfully innocuous to find out something so momentous.
âTheyâll know tomorrow?â
âThatâs what the nurse said.â Piper had tried to dissuade Zephyr from coming to the doctorâs office with her.
It wasnât as if she was having a difficult procedure, or something. But heâd insisted and now, she was kind of glad.
He put his hand out to take hers and led her outside. It was one of Seattleâs rare sunny days. Not so uncommon in the summer, but not something to be taken for granted, either.
âIâm glad Iâm not alone, which makes me feel like a real wuss,â she admitted.
âYou are facing the possibility of a major life change. That cannot help but be disconcerting. You are no weakling.â
She smiled up at him and squeezed his hand. âWell, Iâm glad youâre here.â Even if she hadnât wanted it that way at first.
âI am glad to be here.â
âDo you have to go into the office today?â she asked as they settled into his Mercedes.
âNo, but I did promise to have dinner with Cass and Neo tonight.â
âOh, okay.â She pasted a bright smile on her face. âIf you could just drop me at my apartment. Iâll drive to the office from there.â
Or close her shades, put in the Coco Chanel biography sheâd been meaning to watch and eat that pint of triple chocolate decadence hiding in the back corner of her freezer. It wasnât as if she had to go to work. She was her own boss. If she wanted a day off to wallow in worry, she could take it.
âDinner isnât until this evening, and I was hoping you would come with me.â
âOh.â
âI have no intention of leaving you alone to dwell.â
He knew her too well. âWho said anything about dwelling?â
âWe have been friends for years.â
âAre you implying that makes you a mind reader?â
âI only wishââ he smiled ââbut I do know you.â
âYes, you do.â
âSo, dinner with Cass and Neo?â
âSure.â She bit her lip and looked out the window. âYou know Cass and I have never actually met.â
âI know. It is time.â
âBecause I might be pregnant.â
âBecause you are my close friend and so are they,â he explained.
âSo we should all know each other?â
âNaturally.â
âYour arrogance is showing again,â she teased.
âBut remember, you find it charming.â
âItâs a good thing for you that I do.â
âDo you need to work today?â he asked this time.
âI have a few small jobs I could work on finishing up before your project swallows all my time.â But she really didnât want to deal with any of them.
âIs that what you want to do?â
âNo.â
âWell, then?â
âThereâs a pint of chocolate ice cream in my freezer with my name on it.â Piper clung on to her original plans.
âReally? I was unaware your name was triple chocolate decadence.â
âYouâve been snooping in my cold storage?â She tried to sound outraged, but only managed mildly amused.
âBusiness tycoons crave ice cream, too. Even Greek ones.â
âYou ate my triple chocolate decadence?â The outrage came through bright and clear this time.
âOf course not. I ate the single-serving cherries jubilee buried behind the vegetarian meals you never eat but buy to make yourself feel better about your food purchasing habits.â
She ignored the jab about her sadly ignored healthier food options. âI like cherries jubilee.â
âWith a healthy dose of hot fudge perhaps.â
âOkay, so, Iâm a chocoholic. Is that a crime?â
âNot in Seattle, home to more chocolate-flavored coffees than most small countries.â He sounded indulgent. She loved him in this mood.
âOooh, an iced mocha latte sounds good.â Could she have caffeine if she was pregnant? âMaybe decaffeinated.â
âWeâll go through a coffee-shop drive thru.â
âWhy not stop somewhere?â she asked.
âBecause I indulged your museum obsession in Athens, today is your day to indulge mine.â
âYou want to go to museums?â
âI have other obsessions,â he said as he pulled up next to a coffee shack.
