CH: 81 Powerless
(Rosemary POV)
Sometimes I have to remind myself not to let things get to me, especially when things are out of my control or something that will take forever to gain control of.
I don't particularly appreciate feeling powerless; whenever I am put in a situation where I feel helpless, it leaves a nasty taste in my mouth.
A sour taste that takes forever to get rid of.
This guy will try to do whatever it takes to fight the charges that will most likely be brought against him.
The question is, how will he fight it? What will he do to try to beat the case?
I don't like people who try to use their positions to get themselves out of trouble, especially if someone ends up getting hurt because of them.
"So what do we do now?" Jamison asked me as he came to stand next to me.
"We do what we do best." I said, turning my attention to the boy's motherâthe look of regret and pain on her face.
"Don't children sometimes have the ability to see their love ones in their ghost forms?" Jamison whispered next to me.
"Yes, some children do. It starts with them wanting to see their loved one and wishing they could. Are you asking this because he hasn't shown signs that he can or can't see his mother?" I asked Jamison.
"Yes, do you think he can?" Jamison asked me.
I stared at the boy; a defeated look was on his face.
This will live with him forever: his mom's death. The fact that his dad had everything to do with the death of his mother.
"We should probably get going." I said to Jamison.
"Yeah, you're right. This whole thing is probably all overwhelming for the kid after all." Jamison said.
I nodded and walked toward the agents, letting them know that Jamison and I would leave.
"Let me know whenever you get word on the medical examiner that he is going to hire to do the autopsy." I said to them.
"Will do, he's probably have someone up his sleeve, someone who's done some dirty work and cover up." Agent Brown said.
"And whoever that person is, I would recommend that you look at every single case they took in." I said to them.
The room fell quiet; I looked around to see why and found everyone staring at me.
Did my tone come off rude? It was a habit of mine. I was starting to feel overwhelmed with this case.
"Yes, I agree with what you said. We will look into it." Agent Brown said.
"Okay, I'll reach out to you both if anything further comes up, but until then. She's going to remain in my morgue. I don't care who he sends to the morgue, but I am not releasing her. It's not my job to prove that he's the type of person he is; it's your job too. Keep me updated if anything changes." I said, leaving the hospital room.
There I go again; even though I can admit that my tone sounded rude, this wasn't a matter to relax with or to not take seriously. This was something that none of us should be wasting time with.
It took a while before Jamison joined me outside. I didn't ask him what took him so long. As I knew, Jamison has a soft spot for children, not only children, but he had a soft spot for people. If it wasn't for his soft spot. We wouldn't have met.
It was when we walked into the elevator was when we decided to speak.
"Are you okay?" He asked me.
I turned my attention toward him and sighed.
"No, not really. People like this do get away with certain crimes. He's used to getting away with things and will try his hardest. He shouldn't get away with this, but I don't trust our criminal justice system enough." I said honestly.
"It's not a surprise that crooks in the system have gotten away with things, and the system has allowed them to get away with it. It's known to happen." Jamison said. A look came across his face. That look had meaning behind it.
"Do you have any idea who the crooked Medical Examiner might be?" Jamison asked.
I thought long and hard.
"No, no idea, but it does bother me; it bothers me a lot. How many cases has that M.E. worked that he actually covered up for? How many cases are unsolved or marked closed with the wrong suspect or crime?" I said, shaking my head.
"How many people are sitting locked up for a crime they never actually commit?" Jamison said in a low voice.
The elevator fell silent.
He was right; this whole thing was fuck up.
"Do you think she's going to come speak to us?" Jamison asked as the elevator dinged open.
We exited the elevator and headed towards the car.
"I'm sure she will, after all. We're the only ones who she can speak to right now." I said as Jamison held the passenger door open for me. I got in and sat down, I was starting to get used to Jamison doing things like this for me, and I must admit. I like every minute of it.
He drove us home, and as soon as we walked in. Everyone greeted us with alarming looks.
"How is it that you two went out on a date and ended up running into an accident, that I am sure is going to be one of your cases." Hailey said.
I sighed, not knowing how to explain it, but how it happened would be the best way. I explained to everyone what happened from when Jamison and I left our date to when we left the hospital.
"Wow what the fuck." Hailey said.
"I know about that Lawyer; he's known as a top lawyer in this state. As in billboards and posters everywhere with his face on it." Macy said.
"It's crazy how a guy like that was doing something like that to his family." Marsha said with a disgusted look.
I let her words sink in, trying not to remember my past as I nodded.
Sometimes people that are a part of families have secrets, secrets that hold horrible tragedies and awful truths. This bastard is one of those people that uses his power and rank to get through whatever he feels like. He's been most likely getting away with it for years." I said in a disgusted tone.
"So, this medical examiner, is he going to be taken down by the law? Because he obviously has done some shady things." Mona asked.
"He for sure has, the thing is I am not sure who he has done shady business for and who he has under his sleeve, I can't directly go after him, but I can help start the proces." I said, looking at everyone in front of me.
"Which also means, I might look into all the cases he's done and reopen them." I said in a low voice.
"fuck." Jamison dad, Darian said.
"Medical examiners take in a lot of cases. Are you sure you'll be able to take all the cases in?" Darian asked.
"I can work on the cases with my team and give them a bonus for working on the cases with me. Which will have them eager to work harder on the cases, but yes, it will be a lot of cases to take in." Knowing that taking over a workload that a medical examiner doctor has worked on is a lot but taking over all their workloads is another story.
It hasn't been done before, and if it hasn't been done before. That means I would be the first person to have ever done so, which means there's not only a lot of discussion and news about it, but it will most likely be broadcasted.
I hated being on the news.
It's something that I try to avoid unless I have to be on it.
I can feel Jamison staring at me; nowadays, I can always tell whenever Jamison is staring at me.
"If there are powerful people that he's covered up for Rosemary, they're going to come after you," Mona said in a worried tone.
"Yes, that's true, but I won't let them do anything to me or get away with anything they can try to do to me. Don't worry." I said to her.
"Yes, she has us. We're a family and won't let anyone mess with you or Jamison." Hailey said, crossing her arms with a determined look on her face.
Family, the word made my heart flutter. I never imagined I would have more people in my family.
"Thank you," I said, smiling.
"What happened to the boy? Is he badly hurt?" Jonathan asked.
I lowered my gaze to both Jonathan and Jacob.
"He's okay, he's in the hospital getting better," I said in a soft voice.
"I bet he's scared, especially with the fact that it's his dad that's doing this. He probably feels alone, does he have someone with him now?" Jacob asked.
"Yes, his aunt is there," I said.
The boys were different; after being with us for the time they had been with us, their mindsets developed even more. I know for a fact that their perspective will continue to grow. They'll have an older view and become mature without ever aging.
Something quite sad, hoping that it will be something that they will be able to pull through.
"I'm going to change my clothes and take a shower; afterward, I'll come back downstairs," I said to them, heading up the stairs. I heard footsteps behind me and didn't have to turn around to know it was Jamison.
I headed towards my room, opened the door, and walked in.
Jamison was still behind me, I turned to face him, and he looked at me with a soft expression.
"Did you want to shower with me?" I asked him in a teasing voice as to why he followed me to my bedroom.
"If you want me to, I will." He said with a soft smile.
"I know you're not okay, Bambi." He said, his tone going severe.
"This is bothering you more than you're letting out." He said.
I stared at him, analyzing him. How was he able to say something like that? How is he able to read me? Not a lot of people can read me, and having him able to read me excited but had me nervous at the same time.
"I feel disturbed," I said, not knowing how else to explain how I felt.
"Because someone who is related to your profession is doing evil deeds instead of helping people?" He asked.
My eyes widened as I nodded my head.
"It's disturbing, and I feel powerless. I feel horrible because how many people have had their case close by this person without having true justice served? " I said with anger and sadness.
"Come here," Jamison said, opening his arms.
I didn't realize I had tears falling from my eyes until I entered Jamison's arms, who hugged me while rubbing my back.
(*Kassandra speaks*)
Jamison is so sweet with the understanding of how Rosemary feels.
