26 Reckoning and Disillusionment 26 Reckoning and Disillusionment Alex stood firm, his resolve unshaken as he addressed Bella. “I’ll help you this one last time. After this, you’re on your own. Move abroad, rebuild your life. Our paths won’t cross again,” he stated, his voice devoid of any warmth.

Turning his attention to Johnson, who had accompanied Bella to the hospital, Alex’s gaze was sharp and probing. Johnson, sensing the scrutiny, grew increasingly nervous.

“Why are you here?” Alex asked, his tone implying he already knew the answer wouldn’t satisfy him.
