Lillian’s frustration boiled over. “Where’s Emma? I have to confront her! She’s the reason Alex called me back!”

The matriarch, equally incensed, ranted about Emma’s arrogance post–divorce. “She’s been insufferably haughty since then, acting as if she’s better than us!”

As they fumed, Alex’s voice interrupted, icy and commanding. “Emma had nothing to do with your return, Lillian.” His unexpected presence startled both women.
