"Well, I see you met Francesca and Nikki."

Danielle's voice rang out smoothly as she leaned over the balcony railing, her arms crossed lazily as she peered down at Maya and her friends below. The scene unfolding beneath her was almost amusing—Maya, standing with that same defiant smirk, and her two friends looking slightly less sure of themselves.

Francesca and Nikki were well-known names at Abigail Adams High, part of the inner circle that surrounded Danielle, though they were more followers than equals. And from the looks of it, Maya and her friends had somehow ended up in their orbit.

There was a big possibility that it was because they were the newbies of the school.

Maya glanced up, her blue eyes locking onto Danielle's without hesitation. "Yeah, we were just having a nice little chat," she replied, the smirk never leaving her face. "Didn't realize I was on your radar so much, popular girl."

Danielle tilted her head slightly, a grin tugging at her lips. "Oh, sweetheart, I keep an eye on everyone. But you? You're making it real easy."

Francesca let out a knowing laugh while Nikki nudged her, both of them clearly entertained by the exchange. Danielle could feel their eyes flickering between her and Maya, as if waiting to see who would come out on top in whatever game had just begun.

Maya crossed her arms. "Well, glad to know I'm so memorable."

Danielle arched an eyebrow. "We'll see if that's a good thing."

The air between them crackled with something unspoken, something that neither of them seemed ready to name. Maya, ever the rebel, didn't seem fazed by the attention. And Danielle, despite every instinct telling her to keep things in check, found herself just a little too intrigued by the girl who refused to play by the rules.

With one last smirk, Danielle pushed off the railing and turned away, her voice floating down as she walked off. "Try to keep up, Hart."

And just like that, Danielle's cheerleading friends were gone. Probably to get changed, she knew they'd be back though. Something was telling her to stick around, though.

It wasn't exactly the high school experience they'd imagined.

Farkle, hands shoved deep into his pockets, exhaled sharply, his patience wearing thin. He turned to Riley, his expression a mix of exhaustion and disbelief. "Okay, school's over. Can we go home now?"

Before Riley could answer, Smackle threw her arms out wide, eyes locked onto Zay with an almost mechanical enthusiasm. "Who wants a hug?"

Zay recoiled instantly, crossing his arms tightly over his chest as if that alone would be enough to shield him. "Stop with that!" he protested, his voice laced with the usual mix of exasperation and amusement.

Meanwhile, Lucas sat on the stairs a few feet away, his posture slouched, looking more annoyed than anything else. "This is not how I'm gonna live my high school life," he muttered, shaking his head as though he was already regretting every decision that had led him here.

Riley, ever the optimist, perked up. "But what if there's a good reason the seniors wanted us here? What if it's to teach us something?"

Maya, arms crossed, glanced between Riley and Farkle, her expression unreadable. She knew Riley too well—knew that she had an almost unshakable belief in people, even when all logic said otherwise.

Farkle, never one to let sentiment cloud his judgment, raised a sceptical brow. "What if you just have too much faith in people?"

Riley tilted her head, eyes bright with certainty. "What if I have exactly the right amount of faith in people?"

Maya sighed, already tired of the conversation. With a sharp flick of her wrist, she pointed to the other side of the hallway. "Bird."

Riley's mouth fell open slightly as she immediately turned in the direction Maya was pointing, scanning the room like she actually expected to see a bird inside their high school.

Maya barely contained a smirk as she looked at her friends—specifically at Lucas. Then, she dramatically gestured toward Riley, her voice loud and full of mock disbelief. "How am I in a triangle with that?"

Riley, finally realizing what had just happened, turned back to her best friend with a small, indignant pout.

Lucas groaned, standing up abruptly. "Okay, you know what? That's it. I'm going to look around. Come on, Zay."

Without hesitation, Zay followed his best friend up the stairs, both disappearing into the upper levels of the school, leaving Riley standing there, blinking in mild distress.

"They left?" Riley's voice wavered slightly, as if she couldn't quite process the betrayal.

Smackle, ever logical, simply shrugged. "Maybe they have the right idea."

Farkle sighed and nodded in agreement. "Yeah, I don't know what we're supposed to be learning down here."

And with that, the couple turned on their heels and walked off, leaving Maya and Riley standing alone in the eerily quiet hallway.

Maya exhaled through her nose, glancing at Riley, then around at their surroundings.

Danielle smirked from her vantage point on the balcony, watching the scene unfold below like it was a show put on just for her entertainment. She had seen the freshmen wandering around all day, looking completely lost in the new high school hierarchy. But this? This was better than she expected.

"Wow," Danielle drawled, resting her chin in her hand as she leaned against the railing. "You guys really don't know how this place works yet, huh?"

Maya's gaze flicked up to her, instantly guarded. "And you do?"

Danielle tilted her head, pretending to consider it. "Well, considering I've survived three years here without getting trapped in some random pit of self-discovery, yeah. I'd say I've got a handle on things."

Riley perked up, latching onto Danielle's words like they were some kind of wisdom. "So, you think we're supposed to learn something from this?"

Danielle rolled her eyes. "I think the only thing you're learning is that the seniors run this place, and you're at the bottom of the food chain." She gestured lazily toward the emptying hallways. "Notice how everyone else figured that out and left?"

Maya crossed her arms. "Yeah? And yet, you're still here."

Danielle's smirk didn't falter. If anything, it deepened. "Maybe I just like watching you struggle."

Maya scoffed, but there was something in her expression—something that flickered behind those blue eyes. Danielle caught it, and for a brief second, she wondered if Maya did too.

Riley straightened her posture like a soldier, feet planted firmly on the ground, shoulders squared. Maya, standing just to her right, glanced at her with mild amusement, already regretting whatever was about to happen.

Without warning, Riley turned sharply, her face set with determination. "Okay, everyone!" she announced, far too loudly, right in Maya's ear. Maya winced slightly. "Follow me!"

But Riley was already charging forward, marching up the stairs with newfound purpose. Maya sighed, following her best friend almost mechanically, as if this was just another day in the unpredictable chaos of their friendship—which, of course, it was.

As they reached the top of the stairs, expecting to see an empty hall, they were instead met with the sight of Lucas and Zay, still very much present.

Zay spread his arms, looking around like he had just stepped into another world. "Undiscovered country in every direction," he mused, nodding to himself.

Maya barely spared him a glance, too focused on something else. "Riles!" she called, her eyes locking onto a small nook in the wall just ahead.

Both girls moved towards it instinctively, like they had found their new home. It was perfect—secluded enough but still in the middle of everything. They had barely settled into the space when a familiar voice rang out.

From the upper balcony, Danielle shook her head, watching it all unfold with the kind of knowing smirk that came with being at the top of the food chain. She had seen this scenario play out before. She knew exactly what was coming. And sure enough, she caught sight of two of her cheerleaders walking towards them, uniforms crisp, confidence practically radiating off of them.

"I think this may just turn out fine," Riley said, smiling as she usually did, completely oblivious to the fact that trouble was approaching.

The older students came to a stop beside them, their presence instantly commanding attention.

"You're in our spot," The one with the sleek dark hair—said in a perfected mean-girl voice, tilting her head just slightly.

"This is where we sit," The blonde, added, lowering herself just enough to meet Riley and Maya's eye level, as if speaking to children who didn't understand basic rules.

Riley blinked but, as always, refused to let the social hierarchy dictate her optimism. "In the window?" she asked, genuinely curious. "And you guys talk about life?"

The darker haired, never missing a beat, smirked and finished for her, "No. We sit in the window..."

Then, in one perfectly synchronized movement, both cheerleaders crossed one knee over the other, flipped their hair back, and extended their hands outward in an exaggerated flourish—an exact replica of the way Riley and Maya always sat together.

Maya narrowed her eyes slightly, as hers and Riley's mouth dropped, they both turned to look at each other in shock.

Danielle, still watching from above, crossed her arms and leaned against the railing. She had to admit—it was a little funny. But she also knew Riley and Maya weren't the type to back down easily. And for some reason, she found herself waiting to see exactly how they would handle it.

The blonde cheerleader, her uniform pristine and her smile dazzling, "Hi," she greeted, her voice dripping with charm.

"What's your name?" The brunette asked keeping her gaze on Lucas.

Lucas, sensing the potential for awkwardness, quickly moved to stand behind Riley and Maya, placing a protective hand on each of their shoulders. "I'm Lucas," he introduced himself, then gestured to the girls. "And these are my..." He paused, turning to Riley first. "How would you like to be called?"

Riley's eyes sparkled with awkwardness replied, "Uhh.. Girlfriend."

Lucas nodded, then turned to Maya. "And how would you like to be called?"

Mayas body language was the same awkwardness. "Girlfriend, equally as much.."

The cheerleader's confident demeanor faltered for a split second, her eyes darting between the trio as she processed the unexpected responses.

Meanwhile, Zay, never one to miss an opportunity, flashed his most charming smile at the cheerleaders. "Hi, my name is Zay."

From her vantage point on the balcony, Danielle observed the interaction with a growing sense of unease. The word "girlfriend" echoed in her mind, stirring emotions she wasn't prepared to confront. With a shake of her head, she turned away from the scene, her footsteps echoing softly as she made her way out of the school building and toward the parking lot.

"God, you're so stupid," she muttered under her breath, chastising herself for the pang of jealousy that had surfaced.

The sight of Maya referring to herself as Lucas's girlfriend had affected her more than she cared to admit, leaving her grappling with feelings she had long tried to suppress.

Danielle pulled her phone from her cheer bag, fingers flying across the screen as she typed out a quick message:

Going for a drive. Be home later.

She didn't wait for a response before shoving her phone into the cup holder and sliding into the driver's seat of her dark red Bugatti Chiron. The engine purred to life with a deep, satisfying growl as she gripped the wheel, exhaling slowly.

The moment she pulled out of the school parking lot, the weight in her chest lessened—if only slightly. The scene she had just walked away from played on a loop in her head, no matter how hard she tried to push it down.

Danielle clenched her jaw and shifted gears, the car speeding down the open road. She wasn't sure where she was going—she just needed to go. Away from school. Away from all the noise. Away from the feeling she didn't want to name.
