âWhat the hell were you thinking?â Hunter asks from the other side of the table in the interrogation room. Heâs pacing behind my lawyer, Devon, whoâs got his phone up to his ear.
âI was thinking he told her two weeks ago that heâd kill her, and tonight he had his hands around her throat. What the fuck would you be thinking if it was Skylar?â I bite back, losing my fucking mind as I see it all in slow motion. âYou gotta find out how she is. Come on, man. Iâm dying here.â
âWhy didnât she call the cops when he threatened her?â Devon asks as he hangs the phone up.
I growl, and Devon puts his hand up. âIâm on your side. But youâre in a lot of fucking trouble here, Sinclair. So Iâm going to need to know it all. Now, if he threatened her, why didnât she call the cops?â
âBecause we called you, asshole. We went over all of it with both of you the very next fucking day. We got a security system and considered a fucking bodyguard, that I now wish Iâd forced her to get, but I let her say no. And now where are we? Oh, right. Iâm here, and my fucking wife is in the hospital, and my fucking kids have got to be scared to death. So now. We didnât call the cops, and you know it.â I push back from the table and pace the fucking room.
âLeo, sit down,â Hunter snaps. âYou beat this guy to within an inch of his fucking life, and you assaulted two cops. I donât know if we can make this go away.â
I want to scream at the top of my fucking lungs.
I want my wife.
I want my kids.
I want to go back and actually kill the motherfucker.
Devon looks through his notes, then closes his notepad. âYou hit him once, and you both went down. A witness said you stopped, and the victim said something to you, and then you, and I quote, lost your mind. What did he say?â
âHeâs not the fucking victim,â I growl, and Hunterâs knuckles go white around the chair heâs holding onto.
âIâve got to leave this room and tell your father, who Iâve been friends with for over thirty years, that youâre spending the goddamned night in jail, Leo. Can you help us out here, for fuckâs sake?â
âYou want to know what he said . . . ?â An icy chill skirts down my spine. âHe fucking smiled and said, I am going to kill her. And youâre going to watch.â
Devonâs phone rings, and he looks at me and answers, âYouâre on speaker. What did you find out?â
âThe wifeâs going to be okay. She has a grade-two concussion, but they just released her. Lilah Ryan is driving her home and staying with her tonight. As of right now, both kids are with Sinclairâs sister, Grace, at her house. Not sure what the plan is for them.â
âWho the fuck are you?â I demand, and Devon shakes his head.
âDonât worry about that. Heâs the one getting us answers. How about Dryson?â
âHeâs not so lucky. Heâs got a grade-three concussion, a broken jaw, two broken ribs, and multiple lacerations and contusions. It doesnât look like thereâs any bleeding on the brain, and heâs alive, so at least weâre not looking at homicide.â
âI wish Iâd have killed himâ ââ
âShut the fuck up, Sinclair. You canât say that. Not in here. Not to anyone. You understand?â Hunter waits for an answer.
âYeah. I got it,â I groan, not feeling a single ounce of remorse. Fuck him. âI want to talk to my wife.â
âWell, you canât right now,â Devon counters. âIâve got shit to do and judges to talk to. Youâre going back to your cell, and youâre going to be quiet and compliant tonight. Let me do my job, and do not make it more fucking difficult. Got it?â
âYeah . . .â I drag my hand down my face. âGet me out of here, Devon. I need my wife and kids.â
He stands and looks from Hunter to me and shakes his head, not instilling a whole lot of confidence. âTry to get some sleep, Leo. It might be a long few days.â
âIâll sleep when Addieâs next to me.â
