Su Zhinianâs voice was light and familiar. Every time he spoke, Song Qingchun could feel her heart trembling.
She stood beside Song Menghwa and could hear their conversation clearly, but not a single word registered in her mind until she realized Song Menghwaâs was calling her.
"Qingchun? Qingchun?"
"Huh?" Song Qingchun turned around, and as her eyes swept past Su Zhinianâs gorgeous face, her lashes trembled. Using her most normal tone and voice, she asked, "Yes?"
"What were you thinking about just now? You didnât respond even though Iâve been calling you for so long."
Song Qingchun pouted but didnât answer. Since Su Zhinian was there, Song Menghwa didnât press; instead, he ordered her, "Your sister-in-law brought some fruits with her when she came yesterday, didnât she? Go prepare some for Zhinian."
Song Qingchun nodded obediently and grabbed two apples and one orange as she headed into the bathroom.
Song Menghwa had a personal sickroom. Song Qingchun squatted at the trashcan and used the peeler to take off the fruit skin before dicing the apples and separating the orange into sections. She placed them all into a plastic box before carrying it back into the room.
Song Qingchun grabbed two toothpicks, poked them onto the apple pieces, and placed the box on the bedside table.
Su Zhinian turned around to look at her, but his words were directed at Song Menghwa. "Uncle Song, donât worry and focus on your recovery. I know a foreign expert; Iâll call him to come to China later, and Iâm sure heâll have a solution."
"Everyone has their fate written in the stars. If itâs time for me to go then so be it, the only thing holding me back down is this daughter of mine; Iâm afraid that no one will be there to look after her..."
"Dad, donât say stuff like that..." When Song Qingchun was looking after Song Menghwa the whole night, her heart was deeply worried; he was her only family left in the world. She was really afraid he might suddenly leave her behind, so when she heard him say something like that, her eyes started to well up immediately.
"Fine, fine, fine. Iâll stop... Look, Iâm perfectly fine, arenât I?" Song Menghwa consoled his daughter before turning to laugh conspiratorially at Su Zhinian. "This daughter of mine still cries so easily in public even though sheâs no longer a child; Iâm sorry if it makes you feel awkward."
Su Zhinian lowered his head, acting like he didnât mind the open display of emotion.
With tears in her eyes, Song Qingchun turned to look out the window.
Song Menghwa and Su Zhinian continued chatting for a little while longer before Song Menghwa started to get less talkative, probably from exhaustion. Su Zhinian noticed this, and he said sensibly, "Uncle Song, I still have something else to attend to. Please do rest, Iâll come visit another day."
"Okay, I wouldnât want to hold you up." Song Menghwa nodded with a smile before turning to Song Qingchun and said, "Qingchun, walk Zhinian out for me."
Song Qingchun nodded obediently. She waited until Su Zhinian took the first step before she made to follow behind him.
Song Menghwaâs personal room was far apart from the crowd, so it was quiet. Other than two nurses making their rounds, there was no one else in the corridor outside of his room, and the place was silent.
Song Qingchun didnât walk beside Su Zhinian but maintained a constant one-meter distance behind him.
Along the way, they were both quiet; neither one seemed to be in the mood to begin a conversation.
