I actually put on makeup that afternoon, powder and foundation. I didnât want to see that ugly bruise anymore, and I definitely didnât want Aresâs parents to see it.
My parents.
I obviously was still trying to wrap my head around this, and it might be something I struggle with for a long time. Iâd had two different parents for so long.
Forcing out a breath, I took one last look at the place Iâd been calling home for a while. I was going to a new place today.
I was going to my house today.
Again, I tried to wrap my head around going to what had always been Aresâs house. I was going to live at his big-ass mansion with Bru and, of course, Aresâs parents.
Your parents.
I entered Bruâs suite, expecting to find him. I was ready to go, but he wasnât in there when I stepped inside.
Ares sat in the middle of a made bed, but he got up when I entered the room. He pressed his hands down his jeans. âHi.â
âHey.â I eased into the room. âWhereâs Bru?â
Like he realized it was unusual heâd been sitting in here by himself, Ares glanced around the room. He directed his thumb toward the door. âHe took the bags downstairs. I asked if I could speak to you for a second before we take off.â
I nodded, and Ares and I both took up residence on the couch. Another thing I had to wrap my head around was just being with him. We had this close tie but were essentially strangers. Weâd also been pretty shitty to each other when we first met, so yeah, this was different.
He rubbed his hands, the sleeves of his letterman jacket pushed up. âSo, uh, itâs a big day.â He nodded. âJust kind of wanted to go over whatâs about to happen.â
Iâd been pretty much briefed on that. Before Dorianâs mom had left, she said she was going to contact the Mallicks. Everything was getting set up there, set up for Bru and me to leave here and stay with them. I leaned forward. âOkay.â
âOf course, everyone wanted to be there. Thatcher and Bowâs parents, Wellsâs.â He adjusted in his seat. âThey all want to see you along with Dorianâs god dad LJ and his wife, but the parents all discussed theyâd hold off. Give you some space for a little while.â
Iâd met Thatcher and Bowâs parents, but itâd been under different circumstances.
âMy grandparents⦠my momâs parents and my dadâs mom and her husband wanted to meet you too, but theyâre going to hold off for the same reason. My grandma Evie, my dadâs mom, got remarried, but my grandpa Jimmy is my grandfather. Iâve known him my whole life, so yeah. Heâs my grandpa.â
I understood that. All of this was a lot.
âI guess I just want to stress that thereâs still time to hold off. On a meeting, I mean?â His lips turned down. âMy folks will understand.â
Iâd been told this by more than one person after Iâd decided. They all wanted me to be comfortable. I appreciated that, but it was time. âI told you. Iâm good. Iâm ready.â
âOkay.â He sat back, releasing his breath like heâd been holding it. âI guess I just have one other thing. Dâs parents are going to be there. Royal, and December you met. Maybe they all thought thatâd be a good buffer for you. Especially since you already met December.â His jaw shifted. âD wants to be there too, but he wonât be if you donât want him to.â
I hadnât seen him since Iâd come upstairs to get ready. âHe asked you to talk for him? For him to me?â
âNo, but I offered.â His head tilted. âI know things are tense.â
I was sure he knew everything, my life an open book.
âI told you this before, but the lies really werenât his fault.â
I raised a hand. âIf he wants to, he can be there.â I wouldnât try to stop him, and with all those people there, we probably wouldnât be talking much anyway.
We wouldnât have to talk.
Another thing I was trying to wrap my head around was what his mom had said. Itâd sounded like he had really fought for me. Me and my comfort.
But heâd been so cold before.
Maybe he was having his own conflict, but I was beyond trying to figure it out. I had so much on my plate already.
âThatâs the thing. It doesnât matter what he wants, and he knows that.â Ares dropped an arm on the couch. âIâm not speaking for him, but I know he wants to be there. He does, but he doesnât want to be a hindrance either. He wants to support you, but wonât be there if he knows his presence would make things worse for you.â
This sounded consistent with what his mom had said about fighting for me and making me feel comfortable.
Why does he do this stuff?
The boy was like a brick wall, hard to get to, but once you didâ¦
âHe should be there,â I finalized, making myself say it before I cancelled the thought in my mind. âTell him itâs fine.â
We still had so much between us, but Iâd be lying to myself if I didnât admit I wanted him there.
That I wanted his support.
My heart ached for it, just like my soul ached for what weâd been. My insides screamed for it, and I feared we never would get it back.
How could we?
So many lies had been said, and he hadnât trusted me before. That made it hard to trust him, and for obvious reasons. Trust was so, so important.
Ares studied me. âOkay. Iâll text him. Heâs already gone ahead behind his mom. He was going to meet us there but leave if I said anything different.â
I glanced away.
âDo you have anything for me then?â He opened his hands. âAny questions before this all starts happening, I mean.â
I didnât have any questions, but I was glad he brought this up. I pinched at my sweater. âI know Iâm your sister, and that youâre my brotherâ¦â
âYour twin.â He lifted a finger, chuckling. âAnd I get thatâs weird. Itâs weird for me too. Fuck, Iâve been looking for you, and itâs still weird for me.â
I knew he had. Someone had told me once.
I held my arms. âIt is different. Itâs different for me, and it will be an adjustment, but Iâm more concerned about Bruno.â I shook my head. âI donât want him to get lost in all this, and I guess Iâm asking you as a favor to help me make sure that doesnât happen.â I nodded. âI want him looked out for. Taken care of.â
His life had been upheaved too. Heâd lost his real parents, found out they were kidnappers, and now, his only remaining family, he found out wasnât his own. He was being forced to move into a home full of strangers, and though he was being brave and putting on a tough exterior, I worried about him. I worried for him.
âI got his back, little,â Ares said, and I rolled my eyes about the name. He chuckled. âSeriously, I do. I owe the kid. He looked out for you when I wasnât there, and Iâll never forget that.â
My heart squeezed. âThank you.â
âNo problem.â
âAnd enough with the little shit.â I tossed a pillow at him, which he caught. Fucking football players. âI heard through the grapevine Iâm actually older than you.â Thatcher and Wells had been joking about it at breakfast.
Ares rolled his eyes now. âBy five whole minutes, yes. But youâre still little.â He grinned. âThe nameâs not going anywhere so get used to it.â
I suppose Iâd have to, wouldnât I? We were in each otherâs lives.
And it looked like that wasnât going away.
