Chapter 7 â Echoes of the Void
âLook what I got here, Bl4ze!â I said proudly, holding up a few cans of preserved food and a loaf that somehow hadnât turned to dust. âAll still in good condition!â
He smiled faintly, looking up from the pile of scavenged metal. âThatâs good work, Ryze. Youâve got an eye for supplies.â
I grinned. âOf course I do. Iâve been surviving on scraps since I joined the Resistance.â
âFigures.â He chuckled, then grew quiet. âHey⦠Iâve been meaning to ask you something.â
âAsk what?â
He leaned back against a cracked wall, arms folded. âWhy are you so desperate to go back above? Itâs not like itâs any better up there.â
I hesitated. âBecause⦠I have a mission to finish.â
âMission?â
âTo report back to my squad leader. To help the others who are still fighting. Thereâs still so much to do.â My tone dropped slightly. âToo many people depending on me.â
Bl4ze nodded slowly. âSo⦠the situation above is really that bad, huh?â
âYeah,â I said softly. âThe Empireâs spreading faster than ever. Every week, another world falls.â
He smiled, though his eyes looked tired. âDonât worry. Iâll help you out. Weâll find a way back.â
I blinked at him, surprised. âYouâd really do that?â
âSure,â he said simply. âItâs been a long time since Iâve had a reason to move forward.â
I tilted my head. âThen what about you? What are you gonna do once weâre out of here?â
He was quiet for a long moment. Then he sighed. âHonestly⦠I donât even know if I still have a place up there. Itâs been too long.â
âCome on,â I said, lightly nudging him with my elbow. âYou canât just stay here forever. Youâve gotta have something to go back to.â
He chuckled. âYouâre right. Maybe Iâll join the Empire.â
I froze. âThe what?! Empiââ
He cut me off, laughing. âIâm joking!, you shouldâve seen your face. Youâre so funny when you get flustered.â
âHmmph.â I crossed my arms and looked away, my cheeks warm. âNot funny.â
----------------------------------------
We spent hours exploring every corner of RimScape â collapsing towers, abandoned crafting halls, even old dungeons with flickering signs still saying âDungeon Cleared.â
Most buildings were half-eaten by glitch patterns. Walls shimmered like water. Floors occasionally vanished, revealing endless white nothingness below.
After a while, our bags were full.
âThat should be enough,â Bl4ze said, adjusting his gear. âWeâve got enough food and materials to last a few weeks.â
I stretched my arms. âFinally. Iâm starving.â
Stolen story; please report.
âWe should head back before it gets late,â he added.
âWhy though?â I asked, looking at the dim horizon. âItâs not like thereâs a day and night cycle here.â
He looked serious now. âBecause the Voidâs not just empty space. It shifts. Like a living code, constantly rewriting itself. The longer we stay out when the system cycles, the more likely we get lost.â
âWait,â I said, raising a brow. âIf the land keeps changing, how did you even find this place in the first place?â
He smiled faintly and reached into his pocket, pulling out two small glowing crystals.
âThese are Destination Gems,â he explained. âEach one marks a location Iâve visited. This one points back to the house. And thisââ he raised the second gem, glowing faintly blue ââpoints to RimScape.â
âThatâs actually⦠really cool,â I admitted. âSo we can just follow them to get back?â
He grimaced. âThatâs the problem. Theyâve been glitching lately. Sometimes the signal shifts. You could end up halfway across corrupted data territory.â
âSo basically, we could get lost forever.â
âExactly.â
I sighed. âGreat. Thatâs totally not terrifying.â
Bl4ze chuckled. âRelax. Weâll be fine.â
I nodded, trying to calm myself. âStill⦠itâs weird. I thought we were the only ones out here.â
He looked at me curiously. âWhat do you mean?â
âLike, thereâs no mobs, no players. Just us.â
The ground suddenly trembled beneath our feet.
STOMP.
A low, heavy sound echoed across the ruins.
STOMP. STOMP.
I froze. âWhat the hell was that?â
Bl4zeâs eyes narrowed. âGet down.â
Before I could react, he grabbed me, pulling me into a dark corner behind a collapsed wall. My back hit cold stone, his armored chest pressed close to mine as his hand covered my mouth.
âShh,â he whispered, breath warm against my ear. âDonât make a sound.â
My heart hammered wildly. His grip was firm but careful.
He realized it too and quickly pulled his hand away. âSorry. Instinct.â
âItâs⦠itâs fine,â I stammered, cheeks burning. It was the first time anyone had touched me like that since⦠ever, really.
We stayed still, barely breathing.
Then I saw it.
A massive shadow moved between the broken buildings.
The thing stood at least four stories tall â a hulking Golem, but unlike any normal mob. Its body was cracked and flickering, as if it had been ripped apart and reassembled by broken data. Segments of its body floated inches apart, connected only by glowing, corrupted light.
Its face was half gone, replaced by static. Only one eye remained â an empty, black void scanning the area.
âWhat is that?â I whispered.
Bl4zeâs voice was low. âA Boss.â
âA Boss? Here? In the Void?â
âYeah. Somehow, mobs and bosses get pulled into the data cracks. Some wander here forever, glitched beyond repair. Othersâ¦â he glanced toward the creature as it smashed through another building ââ¦still hunt players.â
We watched as the Golem sniffed the air â or maybe it was scanning. Its movements were jerky, robotic, but terrifyingly precise.
It leaned down, grabbing an entire building with one hand and crushing it effortlessly.
Dust. Code fragments. Screaming error messages flickered in the air.
âWhy is it searching?â I whispered.
âLooking for active code,â Bl4ze replied. âThat means us.â
The Golem turned slowly, its cracked eye sweeping the ruins. Every step shook the ground, vibrating through my boots.
âStay down,â Bl4ze muttered, gripping his weapon tightly.
But then, a soft metallic ping echoed behind us â a loose can from my scavenged bag rolled across the floor.
The Golemâs head snapped toward our direction.
âOh, noâ¦â I whispered.
âRun,â Bl4ze said flatly.
He grabbed my wrist and pulled me as the Golem let out a distorted roar â a sound of metal grinding against code, echoing like a broken file.
The world glitched around us as debris rained down. Buildings distorted into digital ribbons.
âLeft!â Bl4ze shouted.
I dove just in time as a massive fist crushed the ground where weâd been seconds before.
Chunks of terrain flew upward, disintegrating into white fragments.
âCanât you just fight it?!â I yelled.
âNot in this place! Itâs too unstable!â
We darted between shattered walls, trying to lose it. The Golem roared again, launching corrupted data blasts that melted everything they touched.
Finally, we slid behind a large monument half-buried in the ground. The Golem stopped, scanning the area again, before finally losing interest and lumbering away, its form fading into the fog.
We stayed silent for several minutes, catching our breath.
âThat⦠was close,â I panted.
âYeah,â Bl4ze said, standing up slowly. âLooks like the Voidâs gotten more dangerous than I thought.â
He turned to me, serious again. âFrom now on, we move carefully. No noise, no bright lights. If something that big can roam here, there might be worse.â
I nodded, heart still pounding. âGot it.â
As we made our way back, the sky above shimmered faintly â the static thicker than before, like the world itself was watching.
Somewhere out there, the Golemâs roar echoed again, distant but haunting.
I shivered.
Maybe the Void wasnât just alive.
Maybe it was hungry.
