Across the room, Thomas sat in a high-backed armchair, his gaze steady as he took in the gathered faces.
âLetâs continue with the naming ceremony,â he said, voice calm but firm.
â------------------------------------------------------
Location- Duskrane Castle, Duskrane County
Date- 26th, Month of Zephyris, 2007 A.G.
All eyes turned to Edward and Alexander.
Amelia looked at Edward and asked gently, âHoney, have you thought of a name?â
Sophie turned to Alexander, raising an eyebrow. âDarling, did you decide on a name for the baby?â
The two dukes stepped forward together.
âWe want our father-in-law to name them,â Alexander declared. Edward nodded in agreement.
The room fell into stunned silence. Even the maids holding the babies stared in disbelief.
Sophie was the first to recover.
âWhaaat! I thought you were just taking your time to come up with something beautiful!â she exclaimed.
âEd, I donât think thatâs a good ideaâ¦â Amelia said calmly, glancing sideways at Thomas.
âWhy?â the duo asked in unison.
Henry sighed, his face solemn. âYou donât know our fatherâs naming sense, brothers-in-law.â
Everyoneâfrom Olivia to Orianneânodded grimly.
âCome on now,â Alexander chuckled nervously, âhow bad can it be?â
âIâve definitely improved,â Thomas huffed indignantly.
Henry stepped forward, a hand raised as if delivering a eulogy.
âLet me tell you about Fatherâs dark history,â he said gravely. âHe has a⦠peculiar obsession with middle names.â
He shivered. âWhen I was born, he almost named me Fistorius Warflame Duskrane. Mother had to intervene at the last second.â
Sophie burst in, her voice rising. âHe wanted to name me Isolde Moonkicker Duskrane! Likeâwho even wants to kick the moon?â
Amelia blushed, mumbling softly, âHe proposed Genevieve Dragonfist Duskrane for me⦠It sounds like a bar brawler in a tavern.â
Henry nodded solemnly. âThankfully, Mother saved us from a lifetime of mockery.â
Edward chuckled weakly, âBut maybe heâs changed?â
Henry gestured to Orianne. âOrianne, tell them what he wanted to name Vincent.â
She sighed, âCornelius Hoof Duskrane.â
Vincent stared at Thomas, visibly horrified. A look of deep disappointment spread across his face.
The dukes both paled.
Thomas, however, looked at them with wide, pleading eyes.
Edward hesitated, then stepped forward. âMaybe⦠just one last chance?â
Alexander nodded slowly.
Olivia pinched the bridge of her nose. âIf you insist.â
Thomas clapped his hands together. âThank you, sons-in-law. You understand me more than my own children.â He cast a look at Henry and the others before straightening up with mock dignity.
He examined the babies closely. âBrown hair and green eyesâhe is clearly a Leonhart. And this one, black hair with green eyesâheâs a Tigranclaw.â
He stroked his beard thoughtfully. âHmmâ¦â
Suddenly, his eyes lit up with excitement.
âYes! I have found the perfect names!â he proclaimed.
A glimmer of hope passed across the faces of Edward and Alexander.
âFor the Leonhartâ¦â Thomas began, and Alexander puffed his chest with pride.
âHe shall be namedâBenedict Smash Leonhart!â
Alexander stumbled backward in disbelief while Edward struggled not to burst into laughter.
Thomas continued undeterred, âNow for the Tigranclawâ¦â Edward tensed.
âHow about⦠Gorgonius Crank Tigranclaw?â
Edward collapsed to his knees.
Sophie covered her face with both hands while Amelia let out an exasperated sigh.
Dark clouds began to gather outside, the sunlight vanishing as if in horror. A sudden thunderbolt shattered one of the windows.
Everyone turned to stare at the broken window⦠then slowly turned to Thomas.
BONK!
Olivia smacked the back of his head. âOld man, I am genuinely astonished by your commitment to terrible names.â
Henry threw up his hands. âTold you! A monkey flying blindfolded could name better!â
Orianne merely gazed at the babies with pity in her eyes.
âGrandma, bonk him again,â Vincent thought, shaking his head with a sigh.
Everyone turned to Olivia, their unspoken plea written across their faces.
She stepped forward calmly. âMay I do the naming?â
The entire roomâincluding the babiesânodded enthusiastically.
Olivia stepped to the platform, examining the babies closely. After a moment, her lips curled into a warm smile.
âFor the Tigranclaw⦠Raphaeldor.â
âFor the Leonhart⦠Leonatus.â
A beat of silence.
Then an eruption of excitement.
âThatâs so cool, Mother!â Sophie squealed, hugging Olivia.
âThe children like them.â Amelia looked down, smiling at the grinning infants.
âThank you, Mother-in-law!â Edward and Alexander chorused in relief.
âGrandma, you are so cool!â Vincent gave her a big thumbs-up.
âTheyâre magnificent, Mother-in-law,â Orianne added sincerely.
âI was just thinking of those exact names,â Thomas mumbled, adjusting his tie. Everyone looked at him with a deadpan stare.
KNOCK!
A firm knock echoed through the chamber.
âEnter!â Thomas called.
An elderly butler appeared, bowing slightly.
âSpeak, Jonathan.â Olivia gestured.
âYes, Countess,â he addressed Olivia, âthe preparations for the selection ceremony have been completed. The staff of Castle Duskrane has gathered in the hall. Should I vacate the space?â
Thomas waved him off. âNo, leave them be.â
Olivia smiled. âItâs a joyous day. Prepare a banquet for the staff as well.â
The butler bowed again and disappearedâquite literallyâinto thin air.
Alexander nudged Edward. âHey, isnât that the guy who used to babysit the twins?â
Edward nodded. âYeah⦠crazy, right? A five-star knight reduced to wiping snot.â
They shared a laugh as the family made their way to the Grand Hall.
----------------------------------------
The Grand Hall~
Towering stone walls loomed over them, weathered yet regal. The ceiling arched high, carved with swirling patterns that seemed to move when one wasnât looking. Intricate moldings traced the arches, and old grooves in the walls marked the places where torches once stood vigil.

Sunlight streamed through towering stained-glass windows, casting ribbons of emerald, sapphire, and gold across the floor. A quiet sense of reverence filled the airâcool, ancient, and touched by a faint scent of candle wax and aged wood.
At the center stood a circular platform, simple and elevated slightly, as though waiting for something grand.
A small gathering of nobles awaited the Duskrane family.
âI greet the Count and the Dukes.â A tall man stepped forward, dressed in a persian blue suit. His dark blue hair fell into a long ponytail, white eyes devoid of pupils glimmering with recognition.
âDuke Raventhorn,â Thomas greeted him with a handshake.
SLAP!
Alexander patted the manâs back with casual affection. âHowâre you doing, Caelum?â
âTie your hair properly,â Caelum retorted with a smirk.
Edward stepped in, extending a hand. âSo, itâs your third child?â
âYouâve asked that three times now,â Caelum said with a chuckle as he shook his hand. âNow, if youâll excuse me.â
Nobles filed in behind him, each offering greetings:
âCount Elric Farrow of Eldenridge.â
âBaron Halwin Merrin of Hollowmere.â
âCountess Orla Wynn of Windvale.â
âBaron Rowan Alder of Hearthstead.â
âLord Garrick Bramble of Emberhollow.â
âBaroness Yvaine Cress of Norrowood.â
Though powerful, the Duskranes, Tigranclaws, and Leonharts were social outliersâheretics in the eyes of the Fafnir Empire. Only nobles from distant corners maintained ties with them. The rest remained wary, curious how they still thrived with such limited elessly.â Edward said with a disgusted expression.
âHeh, you donât understand love my friend.â Alexander spoke with his hand dramatically clenching his chest as if he were a philosopher.
âIs that so?â Edward lifted his brow.
Alexander blinked.
âLet me show you what love really is.â Edward continued.
âAmelia,â he shouted.
Amelia asked, âWhat happened?â
âUhh⦠I think something has bitten me.â He gestured towards the side of his neck.
Amelia carefully approached Edward. Her eyes were full of worry.
But as soon as her face was close enough, Edward snapped his head and pecked her lips.
Amelia was flustered, she took a few steps back, her face reddened.
Alexander and Sophie enjoyed the view while Vincent snickered.
âAre you out of your mind?â Amelia gasped, slapping Edwardâs back.
âHow-how can you do it infront of a kid?!â she pointed to Vincent.
âEhm, I learned a lot auntie.â Vincent said softly
Amelia became even more red.
Roarâ¦
A deep growl echoed through the trees. The earth shuddered beneath their feet. A stench of rotten flesh spread through the air.
The laughter died.
In an instant, Alexander and Edward drew their weapons, while Sophie and Amelia readied their magic circles.
Vincent, however, merely chuckled. "Aunt, call me if you need help. Itâs not alone."
Sophie turned to him, startled. "What?"
Before she could press further, a monstrous shape loomed from the shadows.
And it wasnât alone.pear ignited, burning with a deep obsidian glow.
CLAP! CLAP!
âThey have awakened sword and spear affinities!â Thomas exclaimed.
Cheers followedâuntil Vincent leaned forward with a sly grin.
âAwaken something greater, brothers.â
The lights vanished. A moment passedâthenâ
FWOOOSH!
Emerald flames erupted around the two oni masks.
Silence.
Then chaos.
âThey awakened the Duskrane trait!â Baroness Cress gasped.
âAnother full generation of insanity?â Duke Raventhorn chuckled.
Olivia slapped her forehead. Orianne and the others groaned in unison.
Edward and Alexander dropped to their knees, their dreams of peaceful children shattering.
Meanwhile, Thomas, Henry, and Vincent were grinning from ear to ear.
âIâm excited to see what theyâll become!â Thomas laughed.
âWill they be maniacs like us?â Henry smirked, thumbing toward himself.
âMaybe the mask doesnât mean insanity?â Olivia offered weakly.
âNonsense!â Thomas grinned. âLook at me and Henry!â
âBut Vincent too chose the mask, and heâs such a sweet childââ Olivia pointed out.
Thomas narrowed his eyes. âYou donât know the boy like we do.â
Henry whispered to Olivia, âHeâs the most dangerous of us all.â
Olivia blinked, looking at Vincent. He gave her a warm, innocent smile.
âWhatever,â she thought, entirely unaware of how right they were.
The celebration continued until evening. Guests began leaving in their carriages.
Now, only the family members were left- Thomas, Olivia, Alexander, Sophie, Amelia, Edward, Henry, Orianne and Vincent.
A pile of gifts sat near the alcoves, few but plenty. Henry looked at the babies,
âThere are still gifts remaining!â
Alexander and Edward were confused. Sophie and Amelia looked at each other.
âWhat gifts?â Sophie raised her brow.
Amelia glanced around, âIs there someone left?â
Thomas let out a small laugh, âWe have yet to give them gifts.â
Sophie folded her arms, half-pouting as she looked at the decorations and preparations around them. âYou really didnât need to do all thisâ¦â
Olivia stepped forward, brushing a lock of Sophieâs hair behind her ear with that motherly grace only she possessed. âHow could we not, Sophie? Theyâre our grandsons.â Her gaze softened as it moved toward the babies. âTheir birth is a giftânot just for you twoâbut for the whole family.â
Orianne chimed in from beside her, hands clasped gently at her waist. âItâs not just your moment, Sophie. Itâs all of ours. These boys⦠theyâve already made this old castle feel warmer.â
Thomas chuckled proudly, his hands behind his back as he rocked on his heels. âIâve already started planning out their training chambers. A few weapons racks here and there, maybe a secret dungeon... nothing too fancy.â
Sophie turned to him, eyebrows raised. âFather, theyâre still babies. They canât even hold their own heads up.â
Thomas shrugged, âWhich is why we start with head strengthening exercisesâobviously.â
Henry, leaning casually against one of the alcove pillars, grinned wide. âDonât forget about us, dear sisters. Theyâre our nephews too. And as an uncle, itâs my sacred duty to spoil them rotten and raise them into absolute legends.â
Olivia raised an eyebrow. âLegends or lunatics?â
Henry threw his hands up, feigning innocence. âWhatâs the difference in this family?â
Amelia giggled behind her hand, âHe has a point.â
Sophie sighed, but the fondness in her eyes gave her away. âYouâre all impossible.â
Vincent, from behind Olivia, added quietly with a smirk, âImpossible runs in the family.â
âOk, letâs start with Leonatus.â Edward stepped forward, taking out a small satin box from his suit. He winked to Alexander, giving him the box. âItâs a gift from Uncle Edward and Aunt Amelia.â
Alexander chuckled. He opened the box, âLetâs see whatâs inside?â.
A brooch in the shape of a lion with his mane and golden eyes gleamed under the light. Two swords crossed behind it.
âYou bastard, you copied my idea!â Alexander threw a box towards Edward. Inside the box was a brooch with a tiger head and a flame burning it in the background, engraved on it.
âYou copied me, dumbass.â Edward chuckled.
BONK!BONK!
...The two men looked thoroughly chastised, standing sheepishly under the stern glares of their wives. Even little Vincent was snickering behind a chair.
Thomas leaned in toward Henry and whispered, âTheyâre already becoming real fathers.â
Henry smirked. âGetting bonked is a rite of passage in this house.â
Olivia cleared her throat, drawing the roomâs attention again. âNow that the boys have received their brooches, letâs give them their true Duskrane welcome.â
Orianne stepped forward gracefully, holding a pair of embroidered white cloaksâeach lined with silver thread and trimmed with dusky gold. Their respective family crest was stitched onto the back in muted tones, so it shimmered only in certain angles of the light.
âThese are from me,â she said, her tone quiet but sincere. âOne for each of them. Theyâre still small now, but someday, theyâll wear them as they grow older.â
Ameliaâs eyes glistened. Sophie sniffled slightly.
âTheyâre beautiful, sister,â Amelia whispered.
Henry popped up. âAlright, alright, my turn!â
He strode over dramatically, pulling out a grimoire with golden ribbon. âThis, dear nephews, is a lifetime membership to Uncle Henryâs Secret Art of Not Getting Caught ClubâVolume One: Tactical Napping and Getting Out of Trouble Like a Pro.â
Vincent burst into laughter. Orianne sighed. Amelia covered her face.
âYou are not handing them a grimoire on how to be irresponsible!â Olivia chided.
Henry wiggled his brows. âItâs called survival skills, dear mother.â
Thomas added with pride, âItâs practical knowledge!â
BONK!
This time, Olivia bonked both of them simultaneously with a rolled-up invitation card.
âEnough chaos. Now, my gift,â she said gently, stepping forward.
From within her cloak, she produced two tiny velvet pouches. She opened one and pulled out a delicate silver pendant shaped like a flame entwined with a vine. The other held a charm of an obsidian star locked inside a crystal cube.
âThese belonged to your great-grandparents,â Olivia said quietly. âFamily heirlooms from the old lands. Iâve been waiting for the right time to pass them on.â
Everyone fell silent again, the weight of history settling gently over the room.
âThank you,â Edward said softly.
Alexander nodded, solemn for once. âTruly.â
Finally, Thomas stepped up again, holding a peculiar metal cube in one hand and a compass-like object in the other.
âOh no,â Sophie muttered.
Thomas held them out proudly. âI have made these using old relic blueprints. One is a puzzle cube that sharpens perception and magical sensitivity, and the other is a directionless compass that only works when you're lost.â
Everyone blinked.
ââ¦So it doesnât work until it does?â Edward said slowly.
âExactly!â Thomas beamed. âGenius, no?â
âNo,â Sophie said flatly.
Thomas turned to the babies. âIgnore them. Youâll love these when you grow up. Trust me.â
The babies giggled as if agreeing.
ââ¦See?â Thomas said smugly.
Atlast, Vincent stepped up.
âEven I have a gift for them!â
