Chapter Sixteen: Evan
I didn't know it would take that long, not to mention it's only been few minutes that I've been waiting for Gabe to come out and tell me that he's fine. Which I knew he will be.
It's hard.
No!
Actually, it's very hard to wait. To be patient. Especially, when suddenly all clocks seemed to be either not working or hardly moving. My heartbeat has been a constant reminder of the situation I was in. My palms were sweaty and I was frightened. I was alone on this; which was new to me. It was like the first time that I did something my friends would never approve of and my parents would...er...eventually, ground me for. But, it seemed right in the moment to me.
I knew I was taking a huge risk when I decided to help him instead of myself by leaving my car there. I was bringing a lot on the line...because trust me, you don't know my dad.
My legs were tired of standing all this time, as I felt them shudder. Impatiently, I sat on the bench outside the Emergency room, trying hard not to imagine his face back from the fight. Marcus was mercilessly killing him while Evan just stood right in front of him; doing nothing at all.
How could everyone laugh and not care?
What have we become?
All he ever did was helping others... and that wasn't what he deserved. It was us who made him look bad. It was me.
A tear strolled down my cheeks and I instantly wiped it off. I couldn't get why was I so much hurt?
My foot persistently tapped the white marbled floor creating small sounds, as it echoed in the empty hallway.
Why was I crying for a guy who did nothing but yelled at me, hurt me, broke my phone, and always been rude to me??!!
Maybe, I am doing this for the guy who said please to me, who didn't actually ever hurt me, who helped the freshmen, and who...
Who is actually someone better than he pretends to be. . .
He hardly lets his guard down in front of me and whenever he did, every time I fell for his charm. I strangely felt safe around him and I never wanted to admit all these weird feelings until, tonight. I couldn't see him get hurt. It was hurting me too.
I snapped out of my trance when my phone buzzed inside my handbag for millionth time and like every other time, I ignored it. Few were from Marissa, mostly from Kim and Justin, and very few from my parents. What was I supposed to say if I had picked up any of their calls?
So, it was better not to say anything, I decided.
I dropped my phone back in the bag again and zipped it up.
The door next to me finally opened and Gabe walked out. I stood up facing him, as he immediately embraced me in a hug. "Hey..."
"Hi." I replied back while hugging him. I felt a little calmer than earlier and slowly pulled away.
He's not like any other 'looking' Doctor. He's gorgeous, pure gentlemen, and Sophie's childhood crush. I found out that later when she told me that his mother and hers were best friends, just like our fathers were.
And, before you rode down the wrong road like, if I ever had one on him, just stop right there! He's like an elder brother to me and the feelings are mutual between us.
I knew I could trust him. I chose to come to this hospital for a reason. The hospital belongs to him and his family, where he himself jobs as a Doctor. A very respected Doctor.
His handsome face glanced down at me with a small smile. "How are you?"
We sat on the bleacher side by side. "Scared." I shrugged and bit my bottom lip. He seemed to understand me, as he warmly draped his arm around my shoulder.
"Don't be. I'm not gonna call police or your parents... You can trust me." He confirmed about my second fear.
"I know I could trust you and that's the reason I came here... But, no, I'm not scared about that..." I said, looking him in the eyes with a hint of what I was trying to say.
Gabe gave me 'OH' expression and smirked, "Ehmmm... he seems special to you... Is he?"
"No!" I immediately retorted, denying it. "It's not that... Just tell me how's he?" I felt my cheeks burn and immediately looked away from his blue eyes.
"Well, it's fine. You don't have to lie to me. It's written all over your face, elle. And he's going to be fine. Just few bruises here and there, and a small muscle damage close to his ribsâwhich is not a problem. You can in fact, take him home, if you want."
Finally, a smile formed on my lips. "Thank you so much, gabe. You don't knowâ"
"I know...." He understood my feeling and kissed the top of my head.
He stood up and so did I. "Now, I've to go. You can meet him once he's awakeâthe nurse will notify you. Just take care of yourself and stay away from any further trouble. Will'ya?"
I chuckled and agreed, "Yeah. I will. Thanks again."
"Don' mention it." He mumbled and turned around to leave but, something made him face me again, "One more thing, elle."
My heart speeded up, as I gave him a small nod and waited for him to continue.
Gabe's blue eyes looked at me and he softly mumbled, "He whispered something like, kyle please don't go in his unconscious self."
I just stared vacuously at him, I didn't know what to say. I didn't know any kyleâor a matter of fact, I knew nothing about him. What was I supposed to reply?
"Hmm. Thanks." I finished off with these two words and without any further questions he left.
"Kyle..." I spoke to myself for fifth time. It definitely sounded familiar to me but, I couldn't recall the memory.
My head was already filled up with so many things that I couldn't think of anything but, him.
Suddenly, my world came crumbling down...
"Elle?" A very familiar voice echoed in the hallway. Instantly, my eyes snapped up towards my left.
My mouth hung open, as I continued to watch a tall, masculine, blonde walkâjog towards me.
"Are you okay? What are you doing in the hospital? Are you hurt?" He immediately enveloped me into a hug and I also wrapped my arms around him. He definitely made me feel like his little sister.
"Justin..." I fumbled and he pulled away giving me some air to breathe.
"Sorry." He said, running a hand through his blondes. "Elle what's going on? What are you doing here? Marissa has called me twenty times to know about your whereabouts. You parents are worried. What the hell's going on? Why didn't you return my or anyone's phone calls?"
"Good to know that my parents are finally worried about me..." I said, sarcastically. "And, I could ask you the same question... What are you doing here?"
"What? Seriously, elle? You did this for their attention? And, I'm here to collect my dad's report..."
"Oh." I looked away from his blue eyes, feeling guilty of playing with words.
"Answers Michelle?" He frowned, grabbing my arm.
"Dad... I'm fine and I can take care of myself!!"
"Ha! Funny! You're done? Because I'm not in the mood to joke. Michelle, what's this about? What the heck are you doing here? Either you tell me or I've to call your dad... Your choice." He whispered-yelled, glaring at me.
I shuddered.
I took a deep breath. "You want some coffee?" I definitely didn't wanna involve dad and it wasn't like I had a real choice. He knew I will eventually choose him.
He frowned and I dragged him with me to the hospital's cafeteria.
I ordered the coffee for us and looked at him, "Promise me no judgement."
"Did I ever judged you or your actions before?" He said with the stern expressions and sincerity in his voice.
"No... But, you might now..."
And what next? I told him about the whole situation. The night nobody dropped me home, the brook night, the apartment night and then about tonight.
When I was finally finished with coming clean, I managed to glance back at Justin whose mouth was hanging open.
"Um..." He ran a hand through his golden hair and heavily sighed out. "I guess...I should go..." Were the three words he said and stood up. I opened my mouth to say something, but soon enough closed it realizing I had nothing to say to him.
"I'll handle Marissa, just get back home soon and safe." He half hugged me and without a glance left.
At least he hugged me.
This was the reason I didn't tell him anything in the first place. Justin hates him and cares for me...
Just great!
I lost the appetite for my coffee and decided to walk back to nobodyâwho might be awake by now.
I was surprised when I realized that I held a smile onto my face as soon as I saw him. I don't know why. One minute ago I was sad and now I am smiling.
Well, he was wide awake, his outstretched hand was trying to grab the glass of water but, it was situated a little out of his reach.
I strode further inside the room. He noticed my presence and stopped trying.
"Wait," I said and poured him the water. Helping him to sit in half sit and half lie position, I handed him over the glass.
Without any argument, he took it from my hand and drank all the water in one go.
I felt a shiver ran down my spine when his finger brushed mine while returning the glass.
What's happening to me?!!!!
"I didn't thinkâ"
"What? That I'll still be here?" I smiled and sat on the stool, which was resting beside his bed.
He was in the hospital gown looking funny. I stared at him, he got one black eye, bruise which colored his half cheek and tad bit of jaw, and a small (already seem to be healing) cut on end of his upper lip.
I wanted few answers but, I kept quiet.
I knew it was THE moment where he'll realize that I'm not that bad. That I helped him and wanted nothing but his own good. Well, maybe who knows, he'll thank me?
But, I shouldn't get my hopes up. After all I shouldn't forget it's Evan I'm talking about...
I snapped back when he spoke with his husky voice , "No... I didn't think that you're so stubborn and dumb. That you force yourself on people who doesn't want you or your help!"
My jaw fell on the ground. What did he just say?
It was rude...like insanely insulting. I'd never felt this slighted with his wordsâwhich started to reiterate itself in my head.
I could almost feel tears forming in my eyes.
And it was the last thing I wanted to do. Cry.
"I guess you meant, helping and intelligent!! So, thank you and I'll just pretend you didn't say anything else at all!" I said in my defence but, in a calm tone and stood up, glaring at him.
"No... you heard me right. I didn't want your help. I didn't even ask for it." He said in his same old hoarse and rude voice.
"Fine, Mister Nobody!! Whatever! You know what?" I frowned, crossing my arms around my chest, and shooting death glares at him.
