â Winstons don't get nightmares. Or do they?
The plan was to stay awake until she heard Dallas rummage around in his room. It was the first night of spring break, and a party had broken out at Buck's. Dallas had told her that she would be dead if she even came downstairs while Buck was having a party, so she stayed in her room.
The plan was to stay up until she was certain Dallas wasn't getting his ass handed to him. But by two o'clock in the morning, she had given up and fallen asleep.
Dallas wandered through the hallway, trying to push his feet towards his door. The party was fun, he had visited with Sylvia a bit, but now he was exhausted. Nothing sounded better than his bed. Nothing sounded more suspicious than the shower running in his sister's room, either.
Hannah pulled her clothes back on as steam filled the small bathroom. She traced the scar across her abdomen with her finger. Six months had passed since Tony's attack, but she could still feel the blade tearing through her flesh sometimes. What she was feeling now was much worse. Her hair was soaking wet, but she couldn't be bothered to care. Her heart was heavy, but her mind was alive. Her eyes locked with her brother's when she pushed the bathroom door open.
"How'd you get in here," she asked tiredly. Dallas shrugged, "picked the lock. What were you doing having a shower at three in the goddamn morning?"
It was Hannah's turn to shrug as she sat on the edge of her bed. Beads of water rolled down her arms as she stared at the floor. "I dunno...didn't feel good."
"What kind of I-don't-feel-good," he asked sarcastically. "Like 'I'm gonna puke' or what?"
Pushing the heels of her hands into her eyes, Hannah sighed loudly. "I dunno Dallas. What's it matter to you anyway?"
"'Cause I'm your brother alright? No one else is gonna look out for you, so it's my job now."
Hannah was quiet for a moment. "Can you leave now?"
"You really want me to leave?" Hannah nodded weakly.
"Tough shit kid, you don't always get what you want," Dallas said while sitting down next to her. "What happened? Did someone do something?"
She shut her eyes tight while shaking her head. "No, it was a...I had a-"
"Nightmare?"
Her hands fell to her sides limply. "Yeah. When I woke up I didn't feel good, so I had a shower."
Dallas ran his hands up and down his jeans, occasionally picking at them. "Still, how did you not feel good?"
"I didn't feel clean." She bit down on her lip roughly when her eyes grew damp. "I just...I felt dirty."
Running tongue over his lips, Dallas leaned back until the only thing propping him up were his elbows. "What kinda nightmare?"
"Don't remember."
"Bullshit."
Dallas watched her carefully while Hannah collapsed backwards onto the bed. "Everything was dark. I couldn't see shit. An' then...then I heard these voices-"
"Whose voice?"
"Guys, well, they sounded older than you. Probably older than Darry, too."
Dallas breathed uneasily while laying on his back. He kept his hands folded on his chest, Hannah's combed through her soaked hair. "Alright, you couldn't see, heard voices, what else?"
"Then I couldn't move. Couldn't feel my arms, legs, anything."
Dallas nodded, encouraging her to continue.
"An' then they started touching me."
Dallas sat straight up, blue eyes squinted. Hannah could tell he was nervous. "What do you mean touching you?"
"Touching my legs, my face, grabbing my hands," she let out a trembling breath. "They were touching me everywhere. Then I woke up and had a shower."
Hannah blinked the tears away furiously and rubbed her cheeks when a few beads still fell. Dallas was quiet as she tried to steady her breath. "It really happened, didn't it?"
She nodded, this time not concealing her tears. Dallas sighed and moved over to her.
"When I first got here, I couldn't close my eyes without seeing Dominic. I saw the alley, my knife, his blood, everything. It was like I was watching a movie, just me stabbing him over and over."
He wrapped his arm around her frail shoulders gently. "After everything that happened, I started seeing you instead. That probably scared me more."
Hannah laughed nervously and rested her head against his shoulder. "I'm not going anywhere."
"Me neither."
