Chapter 28 of 35

Sweet Sixteen

Never Enough Winstons |The Outsiders|1,116 words~6 min read

- Hannah's birthday wasn't anything special

- "Sike bitch, you thought."

- She woke up like usual and went downstairs

- The only weird thing was the fact that both Dallas and Buck were awake

- And it was like, nine in the morning

- And they weren't hungover

- Dallas just waves at her "Morning."

- Buck gave her a card :)

- It just had a lot of bad jokes

- What's red and really bad for your teeth?

A flying brick

- He's just smiling at her

- "Geez, I remember when you were just tiny. Don't you remember that Dal?"

- "She's still tiny, she's only five foot six!"

- "Fuck you, man."

- "Hey! You may be sixteen, but you're still my little sister, and I will beat your ass."

- So they laugh for a bit and reminisce

- They feel horrible that Hannah spent six of her birthdays alone

- Then Dallas decides that they need to go to the Curtis house

-Hannah forgot she told the gang when her birthday was

- They didn't

- Dallas takes Buck's car and they drive to the house

- Hannah gets to pick the music

- Aggressive jam sessions to Elvis

- Dallas reaches into his pocket and gives her five dollars

- "I was gonna get you a present, but I don't really know what you like anymore."

- Back when she was young, all Dallas had to do was steal a bouncy ball, and she was thrilled

- But she isn't so little anymore :(

- "So uh....take that cash and get yourself somethin' nice. Or save it, I don't care."

- "Thank you, Dallas."

- "Yeah yeah....you're welcome, kid."

- They pull up to the Curtis house

- It's loud as usual

- So Hannah opens the door

- And the Gang is in the middle of hanging up a birthday banner :)

- Sodapop is the first to see her and just starts yelling

- "Holy shit! Dal, get her outta here!"

- Dallas may or may not have helped plan said birthday party

- So he pulls her out of the house and they have a smoke on the steps

- This is Hannah's first birthday without her mother

- She can't decide if she's happy or sad

- The Gang is finally ready and Hannah can come inside

- Two-Bit had so much fun with the balloons

- Legit that's the first thing that comes flying at her face when she steps in

- There's a banner in the kitchen

- "Happy Brthday Hannah!"

- Ponyboy is so pissed he forgot the "I"

- Sodapop and Darry made her a cake

- It's covered in sprinkles and sixteen candles

- Johnny, Two-Bit and Steve drew on the banner

- There's a bunch of flowers, random spots of colour and Mickey Mouses

- Micky Mice?

- They got the radio going

- It's ten o'clock in the morning and they've already gone through a  case of beer

- But anyway~

- They sing her happy birthday

- Dallas just laughs because it's awkward

- Two-bit's really off-key

- Steve is just humming along

- The Curtis brothers and Johnny are the only one's singing

- Soda almost sets Hannah's hair on fire when he lights the candles

- But he doesn't!

- So she blows out the candles

- Only one is still standing

- "Ooooo, one boyfriend. Look's like Ponyboy's got some competition."

- "Dallas, shut the fuck up."

- They eat so much cake

- Ponyboy talks Hannah into dancing with him in the living room

- Hey Lover! by The Daughters Of Eve

- Darry's taking pictures for a photo album

- So there's a picture of Pony spinning her around in the living room

- And dipping her

- And maybe giving her a kiss on the cheek

-.....or lips

- He realized after his parents died that no one else would take pictures, so he does

- He gets Hannah and Dallas to take a few pictures together

- They honestly have one {1} decent picture

- They're both smiling, looking at the camera, Dal has his arm around her

- And no photobombs!

- The next is Hannah smashing cake into his face

- The next is Dallas literally wrestling her to the fucking ground

- And smashing cake in her face

- Birthday or not, you don't fuck with Dallas Winston

- Darry ends up framing the one decent picture, and that's her late birthday present :)

- By late evening everyone's had a few drinks

- Except Ponyboy, he will never forget his first and last encounter with alcohol

- So he just talks to people and laughs at their nonsense

- Everything was fine until he asked Dallas

- "So you won't let Hannah have one drink at Buck's, but you'll let her drink here?"

- "I don't trust the guys at the bar to not fuck with her drink. You guys aren't stupid enough to hurt her."

- Hannah doesn't get blackout drunk, but she gets tipsy enough to say a few things

- "Hey Pony, guess what? Me an' Dal are orphans now too!"

- Pony's trying to comfort her

- "Oh no, it's okay baby, Verna wasn't nice. At all. She used to...haha, she used to-"

- That was the first time she called him any sort of pet name

- Pony's kinda blushing until...

- Hannah spills all the beans

- About Verna, about the guys she'd bring home, and about Charlie

- "An' then my dad... y'know, if he wasn't hittin' me and all-"

- By morning, Ponyboy and Darry are the only ones who remember she said anything

- Everyone passes out around one in the morning

- Dallas and Hannah are back on the couch

- Just like old times™

- "Hey kid-"

- "Yeah Dal?"

- "I know I missed the last six birthdays or whatever...so-"

- "We've been over this Dallas, it's okay."

- "How was your birthday?"

- "It was the first good birthday I've had in a while."

- "Happy birthday, Hannah."

So, in case you were wondering, Hannah's birthday is May 13th, 1951. I'm pretty sure I said March in "Winstons", but that was a mistake lol.
