Without waiting for Alexia to turn around, Chaim grabbed her and hugged her into his arm.
Alexia looked up to meet Chaimâs stern face in surprise.
âWhy are you here?â
âI met your mother at the hospital. She told me you ran after a thief.â
Chaimâs tone was indifferent, but his calm gaze fell on her. After ensuring she was not injured, he turned to Joseph, reaching out his hand. âNice to meet you, Iâm Ailyâs husband. Thank you for helping my wife.â
âHusband?â Joseph turned to Alexia in surprise. âMs. White, are you married?â
He thought Alexia was a fresh graduate, but she was actually married.
âMr. Swift, Iâve been married for three years.â
Alexia showed him the wedding ring as her heart fluttered. This was the first time she heard Chaim admit their relationship.
âExcuse me, we have other urgent things. If you need compensation, we can talk later.â
Chaim nodded, gave Joseph his business card, and led Alexia to the car.
âYou⦠how did you know Iâm here?â Alexia asked cautiously when she entered the car.
âA passer-by has seen you.â Chaim replied coldly with an expressionless face.
âOh, I seeâ¦â
Alexia lowered her head disappointedly, savoring the remaining warmth from Chaimâs palm on her shoulder. She hoped he would be very nervous about her. However, as expected, she was only flattering herself.
Chaim started the car and asked again, âYour mother told me something. Did you run out of cash now?â
In order to get the money back, she ran after the thief without considering personal safety. Fortunately, Joseph was there to help her.
Chaim didnât want to imagine what would happen if Alexia faced the thief alone, or the thief carried a weapon.
Alexia lowered her head without words.
The air in the car was painfully silent. After a long moment, Chaim said, âIf you really need money, you can ask me.â
âNo, I donât need your money.â
Alexia quickly refused, much to Chaimâs surprise.
Although she really needed money, Alexia didnât need othersâ help. Especially Chaimâs.
Alexia married Chaim only for the love she had hidden for years, not for his money.
âI thought you needed it and thatâs why you chased the thief.â
Chaimâs face darkened. Nobody had ever rejected him so simply and quickly.
âI need to meet up with my mom. Can you drop me off there?â
The police delayed Alexia for so long; she didnât know if her mother would wait at the hospital or not.
Maybe she had gone home long ago.
âOK.â
Chaim turned around and drove toward Mrs. Whiteâs neighborhood. He parked the car outside Mrs.
Whiteâs house and, out of politeness, he followed Alexia.
Alexia gripped her bag. Even though Chaim and Alexia were married for three years, it was the first time Chaim was visiting her family.
âIt doesnât look like anyoneâs home.â Chaim said.
âLet me check.â
Alexia blushed and hurried toward the front door, not wanting to see his expression.
Alexia pushed the door and found it was unlocked. Worried, she called out, âMom, are you back?â
âWhat took you so long? Do you not care about your brother? Did you recover the money? Show me!â
Mrs. White entered the entry hall from the living room and snatched Alexiaâs bag, not noticing Chaim walking up the front steps.
âIs this it?â She took out all money in the bag and counted it as her face darkened. âDo you really think this measly amount will help! You really donât care about your brother after all!â
âMom, this is all my money. Whatâs going on with Charlie? Wonât this help appease the other driver?â
Mrs. White rolled her eyes. âYou foolish girl. Charlie didnât crash into another car at all. He lost about one million because of stocks, but I couldnât really say that in front of all those people, could I?â
âAily, ask Chaim Lancaster for money. Youâre married; his money is naturally yours!â
âMom!â
Alexiaâs face turned pale. She knew her mother was crass, but she never thought her mother would be so forward with her thoughts. Then Alexia remembered Chaim. âOh no! Chaim must have heard it!â
Alexia looked back in panic, wishing to close the door immediately. What would he think of her family?
âOne million, right?â
Chaimâs distinctive deep voice came from the front porch before he stepped inside and stood next to Alexia. He calmly glanced at Alexia before turning his attention to Mrs. White.
Alexia lowered her head, embarrassed. She wanted to explain it was just a misunderstanding and her mother really didnât mean what she said, but⦠if she couldnât come up with one million, how could she help her brother? Was there any other way except for asking for Chaimâs help?
âOh, youâve come over too, Chaim? Aily, why didnât you tell me earlier?â
Mrs. White smiled warmly again and reached out to invite Chaim, âChaim, come in and sitââ
âNo need for that, Auntie.â
He declined appropriately, then took out his phone and called his assistant, Wood Chiao.
âWood, prepare a check for five million and bring it to me.â
