Chaim lowered his eyes. âHe wanted to talk about the surgery.â
âSurgery?â Evelynâs eyes lit up with irrepressible excitement, âWhen can I have the surgery?â
âSoon, the first surgery is in just a few days away.â
âGreat!â Evelyn wept tears of joy.
Chaim handed a tissue to her, âDonât cry. Itâs not pretty.â
âDo you dislike me?â Evelyn pouted.
âNo.â
âI donât believe it!â Evelyn hugged her knees to her chest with a sad face. âI know Iâm ugly now.â
âYouâll recover soon, donât think too much.â Chaim ruffled her hair, feeling heartache.
âChaim, do you think I can dance again?â
âOf course you can.â
âReally?â
Chaim nodded. He knew how much she loved ballet. So, he asked Nathaniel the same question a long time ago. Nathaniel had said she would be able to dance again, as long as both surgeries were successful.
âI believe you!â Evelyn hugged his waist, rubbing her face gently against his abdomen, âI know youâd never lie to me.â
Chaimâs body suddenly tensed.
âOh, am I interrupting?â Nathanielâs flirtatious voice called from the doorway.
Evelyn blushed and let go of Chaim, âNo, please come in. What brings you back so soon? Is there something else?â
âBack?â Nathaniel raised an eyebrow.
Nathaniel glanced toward Chaim, meeting his cold and warning eyes.
He understood immediately what was going on and smiled, âYes, I forgot some things. Chaim, can we step outside to talk.â
As soon as the door closed, Nathaniel looked at him with a smirk. âIt was Alexia just now, right?â
Chaim gave him a non-committal look and Nathaniel couldnât help but smile.
âI thought so!â Nathaniel laughed. âI really donât understand why youâre doing this to yourself. How long do you think you can hide your marriage from Evelyn?â
âAs long as I can.â Chaim said in a calm voice.
âWhy?â Nathaniel frowned. âShe doesnât love you. All she loves is her ballet and the Lincoln Center.
Donât tell me you want to get back with her?â
âI donât!â Chaim said impatiently pinching his brow, âAlright, letâs finish this meaningless subject. Have Alexiaâs results come out yet?â
âHere you go.â Nathaniel handed over a folder with him, âItâs all in here, read it yourself.â
Chaim casually flipped it open. He couldnât understand any of it. âJust tell me. Will Alexia have side effects or not.â
âWith good care after the surgery, thereâs a seventy percent chance that it wonât be. But she wonât be as healthy as she was.â
âThatâs enough!â Chaim slapped Nathaniel on the chest with the folder.
She wouldnât have any side effects and Eve could be saved. Then he didnât have to struggle and feel powerless anymore.
He would take full responsibility for Alexiaâs future.
Nathaniel called after Chaim as he was about to return to the ward, âChaim, do you know Alexia and Evelyn areâ¦â
âWhatâs wrong with them?â
Nathaniel hesitated for a moment then smiled, âItâs nothing particularly important. Iâll tell you when Iâve discovered more.â
With that, he turned and marched off with his folder.
Chaim stared thoughtfully at Nathanielâs back for a moment before opening the door. As soon as he entered, a dark shadow slid along the floor and came to settle beside his feet.
It was a broken phone, and its owner was sitting on the bed, bawling and out of breath.
âEve!â Chaimâs face froze.
He snatched the bottle of spray next to Evelynâs bed and sprayed her face. A few moments later, Evelynâs breathing regained a normal rhythm as she gradually calmed down, âChaim, theyâre too much.â
âThey?â
âThe other ballerinas. They were invited to the Lincoln Center and deliberately called to mock me. They are so hateful!â
What made her hate them the most was that man. She loved him so much, but not only did he break up with her, he also blocked her and mucked about bitches and whores! As soon as she was cured, sheâd teach them a lesson.
Evelynâs eyelids dropped, covering the hatred in her eyes.
âYouâll be fine.â Chaim patted her back as he comforted her, âThereâll be another chance when youâre better. How about you take a nap?â
âWill you leave if I fall asleep?â Evelyn grabbed his hand, not wanting to wake up alone.
âI wonât.â
He couldnât leave when she was so emotionally weak.
âChaim, donât let me not see you.â
âI promise.â Chaim pulled a chair over and sat down beside her bed.
With his reassurance, she hugged his arm and closed her eyes contentedly.
After she fell asleep, Chaim gently pulled his hand out of Evelynâs grasp and headed to the balcony to call Alexia.
She was still in the car when she received the call. âChaim.â
âYou havenât arrived at the office yet?â Chaim asked hearing the faint sound of traffic.
Alexia looked at the company building only a short distance away through the car window, âNot yet, there was a traffic jam. But Iâm almost there now.â
âOk. Donât go to sleep early tonight; I want to talk to you. I might be back a bit late though.â
âI understand.â Alexia responded in a low voice.
She could guess what he wanted to talk about. After all, he only wanted her for the bone marrow donation.
After the call ended, Alexia gave a long sigh and got out of the car.
As soon as she exited the elevator, she saw Lynn standing in her office doorway.
âYouâre back at last, where have you been?â
âI went out with Mr. Lancaster for some matters.â Alexia took out the office door card.
Lynn followed her, âTalking business?â
âSort of.â Alexia said, setting the air conditioner to 79 degrees.
âNo wonder, you didnât even answer my calls.â
âI didnât mean to ignore you.â Alexia apologized.
Alexia remembered the call that caused Chaim to find her. It had been from Lynn. She intended to return it later, but forgot once she left the hospital.
âAnyway, whatâs so important?â Alexia asked as she made Lynn a cup of tea.
