âNo,â Nathaniel smiled again. âThe nurse only got some of the data wrong. That is all.â
âReally?â Alexia frowned, an odd feeling creeping up.
âOf course. If there was a problem, how could I, as a doctor, not tell you?â
With that, Alexia finally stopped asking questions and was able to relax. She was relieved to hear there wasnât a problem.
âSister, now itâs time to check your heart,â Nathaniel said, naturally changing the subject.
Alexia followed him towards the CT room.
Walking for a while, Nathaniel casually asked, âBy the way, sister, you mentioned that your mother preferred boys over girls, right?â
Alexia nodded. âYes, why do you ask?â
âNothing.â Nathaniel turned back, looking back at Alexiaâs piercing and profound eyes. âJust curious.â
Alexia pursed her lips. âThey just think only sons can pass on the lineageâ¦â
âAlthough this has been the case since ancient times, there are always some exceptionsâ¦â Nathaniel responded, hinting at a secret meaning.
âWhat do you mean?â Alexia asked, cocking her head in confusion.
âNothing.â Nathaniel smiled as he took out a magnetic card. âHereâs the CT room. Please, come in.â
âOkay.â
*****
Two hours later, the checkup was finally over.
Alexia sat on the chair in the hall as she gratefully took the cup of water Nathaniel offered.
âThanks.â
âNo thanks needed, this is what I do as a doctor,â he said winking at her.
Alexia blushed as she lowered her head. Her shy and embarrassed look amused Nathaniel. Although some might say Alexia wasnât very beautiful. Her charms came to the forefront when she was shy and blushing. It was a pity she married Chaim, otherwise Nathaniel wouldâve pursued her. He hadnât had a woman like Alexia as a girlfriend before.
Nathaniel suppressed the inappropriate thoughts, and looked at his watch, âSister, please head back to my office to rest. Chaim should also be there. I will come find you after I receive the results.â
âOkay.â Alexia drank the water and headed over to his office.
However, when she arrived, there was no one there except for a nurse. âDid he leave?â
Alexia looked around disappointedly before turning to the nurse. âHave you seen a very tall and good-
looking gentleman?â
âAre you asking about Mr. Lancaster?â the nurse asked in conformation.
Alexia nodded. âYes, do you know where he went?â
âMr. Lancaster has gone to see Ms. Chi in the special class ward.â
âMs. Chi?â
âCould it be Evelyn?â she thought.
âWhat floor is it on?â
âNinth floor.â
Alexia intended to visit Evelyn. She was really curious about the woman that Chaim wanted her to donate her bone marrow to. Not only that, but she wanted to know once and for all the relationship she had with Chaim. She knew their relationship was clearly more than simple friends.
Ding!
The elevator climbed to the ninth floor.
When she arrived, Alexia searched through the rooms one after another, until finally finding the one she was looking for.
âThis is it.â
Since the door was closed, Alexia decided against knocking and instead stood outside, watching the figures inside. She couldnât see much through the glass on the door except for half of the bed and Chaim sitting in a chair.
Alexia was a little disappointed, until she covered her mouth in shock. Was he smiling? Alexia stared at his face incredulously for a long time as she clenched her fists until her hands ached from her nails digging into her palms. She suddenly understood why she never saw Chaim smile. It wasnât that he never smiled, but that the person who made him smile wasnât her.
Alexia bit her lips. She wanted to cry, but fought back the tears with unwillingness and self-deprecation.
Buzz!
The mobile phone in Alexiaâs handbag rang. The suddenness of the phone call caused Alexia to drop her bag.
In the ward, Chaim turned his head towards the door, making eye contact with Alexiaâs panicky face.
âWhy is she here?â
âChaim, whatâs wrong?â Evelyn asking in concern, seeing Chaim suddenly frowning,.
âItâs nothing,â Chaim said, tucking the blanket around Evelyn. âNathaniel is outside, Iâll take a look.â
âWhy donât you let Nathaniel in?â Evelynâs deep-set eye asked in confusion.
âThereâs no need, heâs too annoying and will disturb you.â With that, he walked toward the door.
As soon as he stepped into the hall, he saw Alexia running toward the elevator.
âAlexia, stop!â Chaim shouted in an icy voice.
Alexia stopped. She turned to look at him and hung her head in shame.
Chaim walked up to her with an unreadable face. âWhy are you running?â
Alexia stared at her shoes without uttering a word. She honestly didnât know herself. Either way, she wanted to get away before he could ask any more questions. She hadnât meant to disturb them, but he discovered her anyway.
âDid Nathaniel finish the exam?â Chaim asked.
Alexia nodded. âMm hmâ¦â
âAnd the results?â
âTheyâre not out yet.â
âThen what are you doing here?â Chaim asked, staring closely at her. âHow did you know I was here?â
The questioning in his tone made Alexia feel uncomfortable. âI didnât see you after the checkup, so I asked the nurse,â she responded, quickly changing the subject. âIs that Evelyn Inside?â Her eyes flicked to the ward door.
Chaim didnât reply as a tacit acknowledgement.
âCan I meet her?â Alexia squeezed the chain of her handbag tightly and looked at him nervously.
Chaim immediately refused, his face reddening. âNo!â
âWhy?â
âNo reason. Anyway, go back to the office. Iâll get the results later.â
With that, he went back to Evelynâs room, leaving Alexia standing alone in the hall.
âAre you finished talking to him?â Evelyn asked as she closed the book and weakly smiled up at Chaim.
Seeing her thin frame, his face showed some concern. âWhy are you sitting up? You need to lie down and rest.â
âMy body is getting stiff, just let me sit up for a while,â she said grabbing his arm and shaking it in a pout.
Chaim could never refuse her when she was like that. So he agreed after looking her over carefully.
âPut this on, donât catch a cold,â Chaim said picking up a thick jacket for her.
Evelyn obediently put it on while asking, âChaim, what did you say with Nathaniel? Youâre always so mysterious.â
