âOh, no. Now I really canât pay it backâ¦â Alexia said woefully.
âPay what?â Lynn looked at her quizzically.
âItâs nothing. I just mean my husband canât pay off his credit card after spending so much renting this outfit.â
âThe outfit on you was rented?â
âDo you really think he bought it? If he really was that rich, I wouldnât need to work so hard every day.â
Alexia said with a dry smile as her eyes fell elsewhere.
âYouâre right, itâs rare to see you wear designer labels.â Lynn rubbed her chin as she thought.
Seeing Chaim walking up to the platform with the microphone, Alexia nudged Lynn with her elbow.
âAlright, enough talking. Itâs starting.â
Lynn immediately straightened her posture and shut her mouth.
On the stage, Chaim looked around. And his eyes seemed to fall on Alexia more often than not.
âGood evening everyone, I am Chaim Lancasterâ¦â
He began his speech fluently. Then, remembering many foreign partners present, he repeated it in foreign languages as well in a fluent and authentic aristocratic accent that mesmerized the audience.
âI finally know how unfair God is,â Lynn muttered glumly.
âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean that God mustâve crafted Mr. Lancaster very carefully, whereas God mustâve thrown the rest of us together haphazardly.â
Alexia wanted to say something but failed. Nothing seemed wrong with this analogyâ¦
âAily.â
Alexia blinked. âWhatâs up?â
âWhat kind of woman do you think is worthy of a man as perfect as Mr. Lancaster?â
Alexia froze for a moment, lowering her head as she replied with a blank expression. âI⦠I donât knowâ¦â
He didnât need to be matched with another woman, she yelled in heart, but just in her heart. He was already married to her.
âI guess she must be an equally perfect woman with a matched family background, appearance, and even ability with Mr. Lancaster.â Lynn analyzed fervently.
Alexia pouted and retorted, âNo way, heâs already perfect enough. Why must he need an equally perfect woman?â
âAily, whatâs wrong with you? Why are you so upset?â
Seeing Lynnâs confused expression, Alexia regained her composure quickly and hastily squeezed out a smile to explain. âI just think Mr. Lancaster is already perfect enough. He shouldnât need to find another equally perfect wife to be happyâ¦â
âAh, okay.â Lynn nodded. âYou were so emotional just now that I almost thought you had a special relationship with Mr. Lancaster.â
âHow⦠How would that even work?â Alexia stammered as she squeezed her handbag tightly, âHow could I possibly have a special relationship with him? Iâm marriedâ
âI guess so, after all, how could Mr. Lancaster like ordinary people like us.â
Alexia frowned again with even more unhappiness in her heart, âWhatâs wrong with an ordinary person? Are you saying ordinary people canât marry people like Mr. Lancaster?â
âI didnât mean that.â Lynn rolled her eyes, âJust all these glorious people like Mr. Lancaster wonât want to fall in love with ordinary people like us.â
âWhy?â Alexia asked struggling to contain her emotions.
âWhy are you being so stupid? Itâs because we live in a different circle from him.â
âA different circleâ¦â Alexia repeated dully.
Certainly, she was from an ordinary family. Chaim was born into a notable family. They lived in different circles.
Not noticing Alexiaâs preoccupations, Lynn continued talking, âSo, I think Mr. Lancaster needs an equally perfect wife who shares common topics with him and can help him in business instead of an ordinary wife who has no ability and canât survive in a luxurious family without him.â
Alexiaâs face turned several shades of red. She couldnât speak out against any of that as she looked toward her husband with a mixture of sadness and hope. Did he really need that kind of wife? If so, why did he marry her? Then again, he did leave her alone for three years before returning to her just for her bone marrow.
Alexia suddenly didnât want to stay here longer.
âLynn, I want to go back.â Alexia mumbled, becoming more downcast the longer she was there.
Before she could leave, however, Lynn grabbed Alexiaâs arm.
âWhy are you going back so early? Did you forget the most important part? The dance. All the women will draw lots and get to choose their dance partner.
âWait, is Mr. Lancaster attending?â Alexia raised an eyebrow in surprise.
âOf course, heâs the reason for the party after all.â
Hearing that, Alexia was instantly dissuaded from leaving. Even though she wasnât confident she would draw Chaim, she wanted to know who he would be dancing with.
Finally, after a long while, the speech ended and Chaim handed the microphone to Assistant Chiao who was standing next to the stage. âYou will be hosting the rest of the party.â
Assistant Chiao nodded slightly and stepped on stage. âNext is the part all the ladies have been waiting for. I wonât make you wait any longer. To begin, please welcome the first lady, Alexia White!â
Alexia froze when hearing her name. âMe?â
âYeah, itâs you.â Lynn patted her shoulder excitedly, âAily, youâre so lucky! Hurry up.â
âOhâ¦â Alexia responded haphazardly and lifted her dress so she wouldnât trip as she walked up onto the stage under everyoneâs gaze.
Assistant Chiao handed the draw box to her, âSecretary White, please draw a slip of paper.â
âOkay.â Alexia nodded, quickly glimpsing at Chaim, and drawing a slip of paper from the box after a deep breath.
She was about to open it when Assistant Chiao jerked the paper away and smiled politely at her, âIâll do it.â
Alexiaâs movement paused, then she politely responded with a smile, âThen, please, go ahead.â
Alexia stepped aside and waited nervously for him to announce the result.
Then, she heard Assistant Chiaoâs surprised voice, âSecretary White has good luck. Congratulations, your dance partner is Mr. Lancaster.â
When the words came out, the entire audience was shocked. Alexia widened her mouth uncontrollably, unable to believe her ears. She actually drew Chaim. But⦠Would he dance with her?
