[1] In ancient times, it was a sword specifically made for the Emperor and the imperial family to use, and it symbolized the power of the Emperor, as well as used to represent the Emperor’s decree. In this particular context, it’s referencing one of its other usage, which is when the Emperor bestows the sword to a general, it gave the general the authority to directly kill low level officers and soldiers on the battlefield (on their own side, not the enemy side, basically their own subordinates) without needing to specially report to the imperial court. This was where the idiom ‘behead first, report later’ (先斩后奏) comes from. Also it seems Qi Yuan doesn’t have an actual sword made for this purpose, hence why it’s nonexistent.
