[1] I wasn’t sure if this footnote was really necessary, but in case there are lost souls, I shall explain. Sun Yi Jia calls Kang Qinwang by his title ‘Kang Qinwang’ and refers to Kang Wangfei as older cousin-in-law, a much more intimate address. In a way, she considers Kang Wangfei more as family than her actual older cousin, Kang Qinwang.

[2] This is a memorial tablet erected for the living, basically a tablet and altar honoring a great benefactor. These are considered a huge deal, and the purpose is to repay the favor by worshiping their tablet and praying for a long and happy life for them.
