I shrug off Chaseâs arm when he tries to put it around my shoulder and stuff my hands in my pockets. Iâm positive that girl who practically glued herself to him a minute ago is a former hookup. She was so thrilled to see him, and then she shot daggers at me with her pretty, green eyeballs when he basically shrugged her off, exactly like Iâve done to Chase.
Iâm so out of my depth. What started as a great night has done a swan dive into a pile of crap. Iâm grateful when Chase doesnât suggest walking through the house again and guides me around the outside. I feel horribly out of place, and stupidly jealous.
All these girls who go to these parties are effortlessly cool and pretty and have no problem talking to him. Or any of the other guys. Theyâre fun and fun to be around. They want to be here. And it doesnât matter that Iâm standing right beside him. They all seem to look right through me. Like Iâm a pane of glass. Like Iâm not even there.
âChase man! You just got here!â A guy calls out.
âChase! I didnât even get to say hi!â Another freaking girl rushes over and throws her arms around him.
âMy girl has an early class. Iâll see you later.â He extracts himself from her hug and rushes to catch up to me.
I know this neighborhood. Weâre not that far from campus. Itâs maybe a fifteen-minute walk. I just need to hold it together that long.
As I head for the sidewalk, the front door is thrown open and two girls rush out. Two familiar girls. Barbie and Annabelle.
âYou were supposed to be keeping guard!â Barbie barks at Annabelle.
âI didnât know you were going to take his jersey!â Annabelle tries to get her to stop. âYou have to give it back!â
âNot now!â Barbie snaps her fingers at Annabelle. âCome on, letâs get out of here.â
Annabelle looks like the last thing she wants to do is follow Barbie, but she does anyway, and they disappear down the street at a sprint.
âThat looked intense,â Chase mutters.
I head down the sidewalk going in the same direction as Annabelle and Barbie, but theyâve already disappeared around the corner. Chase falls into step beside me.
âCammie.â
I make a noise, but donât say anything.
Chase tugs on the sleeve of my jacket. âHey. Are you okay? Did Dougie say something to you?â
âIâm fine.â Dougie was annoyingly stereotypical. He asked who I came with. When I said Chase, he laughed like he didnât believe me. Sure, he was drunk, but thatâs when peopleâs filters disappear. He was just speaking his drunken truth.
âYouâre not fine. Can you stop for a second? Please.â
Weâre far enough away from Macâs house and between streetlamps, so no one can witness this. I better not cry. I bite my lips together.
âTell me whatâs wrong? What happened?â
âDid you hook up with that girl who hugged you?â The question is out before I can call it back.
âWhich one?â He cringes and his expression shifts to discomfort. âDo you really want to know?â
I sigh and tip my head back. âNot really, and that basically answers the question anyway.â Itâs a pretty night. There are stars in the sky and the moon is bright. How different would this have been if weâd made it to the movie? âI donât know if this is a good idea.â Or if my heart can handle being broken by Chase.
His brows pull together in a delicious furrow. Itâs so unfair that he can be pretty even when heâs displeased.
âWhatâs not a good idea?â
I swallow past the lump in my throat and motion between us. âThis.â God, my feelings are too big, and the look on his face is ruining me.
âBecause that girl hugged me?â He shoves his hand through his hair, like heâs just as anxious as me.
âNo. Not because she hugged you. I mean, itâs part of it. I donât look like any of the girls at these parties, Chase. Iâm not cool, itâs not really my scene and itâs definitely yours.â Thereâs a huge lump clogging my throat.
âFirst of all, youâre beautiful, Cammie. Second, youâre the coolest fucking person I know.â
I give him a look.
âIâm serious. And just because this hasnât been your scene doesnât mean you wonât ever like a party,â Chase implores. âI thought maybe it would be a good way for you to meet my friends, but I realize now maybe it was a bit overwhelming.â
âIâm scared, Chase,â I admit.
âOf what? Talk to me, Cammie. I canât fix this if I donât know what I did wrong.â
If Iâm not honest weâll never get anywhere. And how will I feel if I let my fears rule me? What will keeping this to myself solve? Nothing. I motion toward Macâs house. âAll those girls in there are so different from me. Besides being put together and pretty and cool, they donât have a problem coming up to you and saying hi, or even hugging you. Even when I was standing right there.â
âI donât need you to be like those girls. I like you just the way you are.â
âThatâs not really the point, though. Itâs fine when itâs just the two of us. But when weâre with your friends I donât feelâ¦included. I disappear to you just like I do with all of them. You didnât introduce me to half the people who said hi to you,â I explain.
âI didnât remember their names,â he admits.
âIs that supposed to make me feel better? Because honestly, it really doesnât.â
He nods slowly, maybe absorbing my words. âI can see why that would be problematic.â He rubs his bottom lip with his thumb. âIâm sorry I brought you here.â
âI donât want you to be sorry for bringing me to a party, Chase. I can see how they could be fun. I just need you to remember to try to include me.â I shore up my courage to say the last part, because itâs the hardest to verbalize. âI just want to feel as special when weâre out together as I do when weâre alone.â
His breath leaves him on a whoosh, and he steps in and cups my face in his cold palms. âYou are special. So special. Youâre the only girl Iâve ever felt this way about.â He presses his forehead to mine. âGive me a chance, please? Iâm new at this, and clearly not great at the whole boyfriend thing, but I can learn. I want to learn. I want to be a good boyfriend. More than that, I want to be your boyfriend.â
My heart stutters and gallops. âI want you to be my boyfriend, too,â I whisper.
He wraps me in his warm, strong arms and buries his face against my neck. âIâll do better next time, I promise. And if Iâm fucking shit up, please call me out. I donât want to lose you.â He pulls back and brushes his lips over mine.
âI donât want to lose you either.â
