What's wrong with me?

How did I brush it off so simply?

'He's just being miserable again.'

My exact words to myself earlier, when he set out to meet Toya. I let him struggle without blinking an eyelid.

He's my little brother for fucks sake. I was meant to be there for him when others weren't.

He wakes up, and I stand immeditely, going over to him. Toya went to the shop to get snacks.

"Akito. Can you hear me?" I say quietly. He sits up and groans.

"What's been up with you recently? I've caught you crying, and your coughing a lot, and your voice is really raspy." I point out factors. He blinked at me, before he looked away and started coughing into his hand.

I watched him put his palm out to me. A blood drenched sunflower. The whole thing, coated in peircing red.

Is this Hanahaki disease? An entire flower? How late am I finding this out?!

"Who is it?" I swallow.

"Toya." He whispers, wiping his mouth. Toya just got a new girlfriend. Oh fuck.

I rub my forehead nervously, my thoughts at a complete standstill. Toya walks back through the front door and into Akito's, where both of us are.

"I got you some cheesecake, cause you eat it up like there's no tommorow. It's downstairs." He said, and handed Akito some Pocky sticks.

My eyes widened, my entire body dropping through the floor when my brother went out to reach for them and his sleeve rode up. He shoved it back down. Toya saw too.

The bandages, around his wrists. White material dashed with dots and smudges of red.

I don't mention it. Not yet. I watch Akito's eyes dart around the box, flipping it around for a second as he looked at something, putting it back down on the side after.

"I'll eat them later. Thank you." Akito smiles weakly. Toya's phone buzzes, as he checks the time.

"I- I have to go." he stammered.

"Hey uh, be careful." I said to Toya hesitantly.

"I'll try." He replied quietly, before smiling at us and leaving, closing the door behind him. I can see Akito trying to bottle it a little more but can't.

He bursts and starts crying quietly, but I know how much it hurts to contain sobs and compress them to small tears. He coughs loudly, petals and blood falling into his palms.

He sniffed in, his nose stuffy, his cheeks shaded a little pink.

"Akito." I said calmly, taking his hand into mine as i gently rolled down his sleeve. He gave in fighting against me. I knew immeditely.

I looked over at the sharpener he used to sharpen his pencils for school studies, and I find the left blade missing.

"Why?" I frown, looking back at him.

"Because I just want this dumb thing to kill me off already. Why is it taking so long?" He demanded, his voice raspy and crackly.

"Akito it'll last for weeks more." I explain quietly, looking at my thumbs as I sit on the floor, him perched on the bed.

He blinked at me tiredly, his eyes so unbelievably dead. Since when was he so pale? Akito dropped back down and pulled the covers over him, sniffing in as he rested and got some sleep.

I stayed next to him. How could I let him feel like that and ignore it? I sigh irritably, pissed off at myself.

I wake up, greeted by spinning and dizziness. I groan and rub my forehead before I sit up and manage to rid of the nausea, blinking slowly.

I look at the time. I should be getting ready for school.

I cant. I don't have the mental capacity to even message Toya to tell him that I'm not in.

"You staying off?" Ena walked in, standing by the doorway.

"Mh." I push the covers back over myself, barely able to find effort to use my voice.

"Maybe you should, uh.. try?" Ena was clearly being careful with her words. Why? She never was before, and I don't want her sympathy to make her step gently.

"Fine. Whatever." I rub my eyes, sitting upon my bed with my eyes closed for a moment. I open them to a squint before I get up and get changed.

I adjust my tie and fix up my hair, before I grab my school bag and get ready to leave. I pause before I leave my room and hesitate, walking back in.

Grabbing concealer, I apply it over my eyebags and even it out over my skin, making my face just a little less ugly.

"Eat. Look." She handed me a peice of toast with butter on it.

Why did it have to be butter? Fuck. She won't let me leave without it.

I take it and put it in my mouth, biting down. I'm chewing, but I'm not eating. I feel like I'm not real.

My throat feels extremely sore whenever I use it to speak, so I limit my speech as much as possible.

I rub my forehead, trying my hardest not to pay attention to the vivid sick feeling growing in my stomach.

I smile at Ena and walk out the door, shutting it behind me as I lower my head to look at the floor, walking to school.

Nobody warned me that this was going to happen. I pace around my room, ranting to KAITO about life crisis situations and bombarding him with absolutely everything.

He's sat on my bed, taking everything in.

"Like, Hana wants to legitimately take things further, and I'm absolutely terrified of that. I stay away from 'take things further' shit. And she's just strutting over and telling me this and it's stressing me out." I groan, covering my face.

"And then Akito is like perfect. Fucking perfect face, body, personali-" I stop dead. I see KAITO smirk in the corner of my eyes.

"That's a tad gay." He pointed out.

"You really DONT help." I squinted at him.

"What the hell did I just say?" I have to actually sit back and take a moment, processing. KAITO can probably physically see the cogs turning.

"Err, let's see. You started yapping about how Hana was pissing you off by wanting to do more, and then proceeded to tell me how oh so perfect Akito is. I think we found an answer, don't you?" He smiled. I ignored the last part.

"And he's like, kinda ill recently. Mentally. I'm worried about it, but I'm not pushing it because if he wanted me to know, he'd have said." I sigh, before i sit down on the bed and flop down.

"I hate my life." I scream into a pillow.

"Okay and-" KAITO was just about to hit send on something but I shot up and looks at my phone.

"You were about to break up with Hana over text? Are you insane?" I demand.

"I swear to lord above I'm ranting to someone else next time. Go away." I shoo my hand in his face. He laughed and I stopped playing a track on my phone as he dissapeared.

"At least do it in real life, whore." I sigh.

"I heard that!!" He yelled, appearing on my screen.

"Good." I get rid of him again and put my phone in my pocket, touching my uniform up before I go downstairs.

Father is here. I freeze. Why isn't he out? He's always out in early morning. I greet him with a nod and he blinks at me, looking back at the TV.

I nervously walk past and blink, making myself cereal as I eat it quickly. He comes into the kitchen just as I wash up to bowl.

"What are you doing?" He asks. He smells like alcohol.

"J-just uh. Cleaning up after myself." I whisper, drying off the bowl as I put it away.

He squinted at me.

"Why do you look like that?" He pulled a grossed out face. I swallow, my heart sinking a little.

"Look like- look like what?" I look at the floor.

"Weird. Make yourself presentable." He frowned at me.

I realise I somehow forgot to tuck my shirt in. It- doesn't even look too bad. I leave it as it is and sling my bag over my shoulder as I head out, making my way to school.

I meet Akito and An out the front.

"I'm having the biggest crisis I've ever had." I sigh. Akito frowns, blinking, An invested.

Hana comes over to me.

"I- We need to talk." I say to her.
