Chapter 4 of 43

My Angel

Luna? No sir i'm a Marine3,048 words~16 min read

I rolled over and pulled the blanket over my head. A smell of woods, chocolate and citrus fruits consumed me. I don't remember buying this perfume, it's quite manly, but it's devine. I was just about to let sleep consume me again when it hit me like Miley Cyrus on a wrecking ball.

I can recall most of what happened before lights out. However there is one thing I know for certain. I collapsed next to a deserted open road and forest. I could be anywhere with anyone. I kept my eyes closed hoping that if anyone is in the room they would still be under the assumption that I am still out cold. So far all I know is I am lying on a bed, I can feel the soft sheets under my hands, the duvet draped across my body and a fluffy pillow under my head. Not difficult to put together.

But that is all I know. I remain perfectly still and move my focus to my surroundings not what is supporting my weight.

There is no breeze on my face, the air is still. Either both the window and doors are closed or else there aren't any. No footsteps, no creeks, the only sounds in this room are coming from me. With each inhale and exhale I remain alone.

Trusting my gut I make to decision to open my eyes. The room is darker than I expected. The colours very neutral, beige almost grey and white walls with a mahogany wood floor. There are multiple windows high and low, squares and rectangles. They cover the wall and only the top two open. Given the height of the window and its dimensions, the only way for me to get out of that window is to go through it. The curtains are drawn but very sloppily, allowing some light to shine through. It means the person who closed them has not returned to open them but that will probably happen soon.

I don't know how much time I have. I sat up and swung my legs around so they dangled off the bed. My head was pounding and things were spinning. I got to my feet and walked straight over to the windows. I'm on the second floor, at the back of the building. This indicated by the lack of driveway or cars and the fact that i'm looking at a large grassy area leading up to a forest.

Cold air wrapped around my ankles. My head snapped towards the door, preparing myself for a fight. I may be injured, I may be in pain but it does not mean I will not try to fight. There was a little boy standing there. I recognised him but I couldn't put my finger on it. He's about nine or ten. His dark brown hair slightly covering his emerald green eyes.

A small voice brought me out of my thoughts.

"It-it's you, you came back. She's going to be so happy. Quick come with me"

I didn't even have time to process what he had said before he caught my hand and was dragging me out of the room. People no matter how cold and heartless always have a weak spot for children. I saw it in war zones, the compassion they hold for young helpless children. They recruit child soldiers because it's easier than killing them and also in a war soldiers like myself wouldn't bat an eyelid to kill a man or woman with a gun but a child, no one pulls that trigger with a light heart when children are involved. So with this little boy, I have some form of protection.

We were going around corners, hallway after hallway, rooms everywhere, then down a staircase. How the hell did this little boy know where he was going. I'm confused already, and i've had training in this sort of thing.

He came to a stop in front of a door. At first glance there was nothing special about it, it was a cream door we had passed a fair few on the way.

"Go on you can go inside she'll be so happy to see you"

She could be my killer or my saviour.

I think he was getting impatient because he knocked on the door himself then pushed me into the room. I barely had time to catch myself.

I took in my surroundings, looking for any sign of a threat. What can I say Afghanistan changes a person. Instead all I found was a little girl playing with barbies in the middle of the room.

I cleared my throat hoping to gain her attention. Nothing.

Alex - 0 Malibu Barbie -1

"Err miss?" I didn't know how to handle children who haven't been affected by war or hurt. She looked straight at me. Those huge green eyes. It all came flooding back. The van, me running to save her, the little boy taking her away, the pain in my back. That's where I know the little boy from.

"It's you, you're the angel that saved me" I walked over and sat beside her. I said the only thing that came to mind

"I'm no angel"

"Yes you are, you saved me, you're my angel."

She looked at me with such admiration. It was then I noticed the tears in her eyes.

"Hey, shh shh what's wrong sweetie?"

With that the flood gates were opened, it was like someone turned on a tap. I lifted her into my lap hoping the sound of my heartbeat would sooth her as I rocked us back and forth. It worked with the orphans I encountered, why shouldn't it work now? As I lifted her I ignored the scorching pain that shot through my back, she was my main priority now.

"What's wrong?"

In between hiccups I managed to hear her mumble "it's my fault".

Then she cleared things up for me "it's my fault you're hurt"

Shit had she seen me wince in pain? But she wouldn't know my back was sore.

"I'm not hurt".

That's when she cried out and touched my face. So I stood up and walked towards the mirror above the fireplace that I had noticed when I first entered. The scratches were quite visible but were healing well.

"Is there blood?"

"No"

"is it bruised?"

"No"

"then there you go"

"but-"

"ah butts are for sitting on". That made her giggle and her giggle made me wanna take her home even more.

Home. I can't ask her she's only a child. The halls were empty, however no one leaves an unconscious girl and two children home alone. I still do not know where I am or why I am here.

I was just about to sit back down when out of the corner of my eye I saw 3 guys and the little boy from earlier staring at me.

"Didn't your mother teach you it's rude to stare."

It may have been stupid to have been sassy but their reactions would tell me a lot about them and their intentions. It also says a lot about me, my voice was strong proving that although on the inside I know that the odds are not in my favour, I am injured. The three of them are over six foot and built better than most marines I know. On the outside it gave the illusion that I am unfazed and not threatened.

With that they all looked at the floor except one. I turned around to face them and he held my gaze. My breath hitched. DAMN SON HE IS FINE. But it was his eyes that had my heart going a mile a minute in fear and lust. Believe it or not he had blue eyes. Not just any blue eyes but THE blue eyes. The blue eyes from my dreams, the blue eyes that the wolf had. In the time that I was staring at him the others seemed to leave but he did not move and his gaze did not falter.

"See I told you, I told you there was an angel and I told you she was here and I told you she was awake."

The little boy said I'm guessing to mr tall, dark and mysterious as he walked over and hugged my leg. It was then I realised I didn't know their names.

"Oh where are my manners, i'm Alex what are your names?"

"I'm Simon and she's my little sister Rose and that's Luke but he's always grumpy so don't talk to him."

I couldn't stop the little giggle that escaped my lips. I swear I saw Luke's lips twitch slightly as if he wanted to smile but I guess that would have ruined the "bad boy" act.

Acting normal around the children is the best thing I can do right now. Gain their trust and get answers.

I then felt a cool breeze on my legs. That's odd, i'm sure I was wearing jeans yesterday or whenever I saw the wolf. I detached Rose from my hip and held her at arms length to check to see what I was wearing. I Prayed my eyes were playing a cruel trick on me. I was in a PINK nightdress. PINK, FLOWERY DRESS. That looks like it came straight out of the 1940's. I was horrified but there was only one thing on my mind.

I heard a deep husky voice ask if I was ok. I swear my knees almost buckled, the hairs on my neck stood up, I got the shivers. The good kind of shivers. I cleared my throat and shook my mind of the dirty thoughts. They must have noticed the sudden change in my demeanour.

Rose giggled and the two boys looked at me like I had grown a second head. I have had enough of pleasantries and thought i'd try my hand at just leaving. There isn't a hostile environment and I wasn't chained up. Everything is pointing to a kind samaritan who found me on the side of the road and helped me. One thing does stick out, you would have thought they would have called an ambulance and left me at the hospital. Maybe they're after a reward or thank you.

Luke leaned against the door frame and showed no sign of moving so I tried to squeeze past him but we ended up facing each other in the door way. He put his hand on my waist and it felt like he brought all the butterflies to life in my stomach.

"If you don't mind I need to go."

He growled, he actually growled. Like a full on dog growl. I put my free hand on his chest, ignoring the tingles and said "I think you should get that checked out."

I heard laughter from down the hall. I know where we're going next.

With Rose securely on my waist I made a move, following the voices. I'm sure Rose resembled a sloth, just sitting there, hanging off me, as happy as can be. Every step I took I could feel someone following me, My money's on Luke.

Finally after so many twists and turns the voices got louder, but it seemed as I got closer the people began whispering.

Walking into the room i'm sure all the noise was coming from I noticed it was a kitchen. Thank god i'm starving. The three lads I saw earlier were sitting there whistling looking around. You know that odd thing that everyone does when someone shout's "act normal" then everyone acts even more suspicious. This looks exactly like that.

I simply chose to ignore it and give my attention to the sloth on my arm who was currently tugging at the nightdress I was wearing.

"Can I have some Nutella on bread.....please."

I'm sure my eyes were glowing, I live for Nutella. "Of course"

None of them opened their mouths to talk but their eyes never left me. Everyone seemed to know I was here but no one offered me an explanation. The house had a homely feel about it. Most people would be freaking out in my position but I had to think logically about this. If I don't pose a threat then hopefully they won't either and i'll be on my way once again.

I sat her on the counter and began searching through the cupboards and draws getting what I needed. Seeing as tom, dick and harry didn't offer to help. I heard shuffling and muttering. When I turned around Rose was engrossed in watching me and what I was doing, and the four boys were huddled together like teenage girls talking about a crush.

Once her Nutella sandwich was done I lifted Rose off the counter and placed her so she was standing on her own two feet on the floor. She was staring up at me with those adorable eyes, giving me the puppy dog eyes. No matter how cute you are they don't work on me sweet cheeks.

"Go on i'm sure your barbies are missing you or go watch TV hun, i'll find you and read you a story in a bit ya?"

A huge grin took over her face and her eyes sparkled. She then ran off, her pigtails swaying from side to side and Nutella sandwich in hand.

It was calling me so I took a spoon full of Nutella and shoved it in my mouth. Very lady like of me but I haven't eaten yet. By now the boys had finished whatever it was they were doing and were just staring at me.

it's time for answers.

"Hi i'm Alex. I would like to know where I am and why I am here"

None of them answered me, it was just dead silence. Why does playing nice never work?

"I want answers and I want them NOW"

They seemed taken back by my sudden change in tone and attitude.

Mr Tall, dark and Handso-LUKE JUST LUKE stepped forward. So I stepped forward. It was like a game of chicken. He looked at me almost daring me to keep going. Big mistake buddy. We were less than arms length apart and I had to look up to maintain eye contact. I could feel his minty breath fanning my face and it was only now that I realised that he smelled exactly like the bed I was in this morning.IT COULDN'T HAVE BEEN.

"It was your bed wasn't it?"

The only response I received was a gruff "yes."

His voice was still husky and at the mention of me in his bed his eyes darkened.

"Why the hell am I here?"

"Well you see princes-"

"do not call me that"

"whatever you say princess"

This guy was really starting to piss me off and the smirk told me it was on purpose and he was enjoying it.

"Well ya see doll face, we couldn't just leave ya on the side of the road now could we lads?"

This was followed by a chorus of no's, then he continued

"we were raised better than that and taught to always help a damsel in distress."

Strike 1. This had me fuming. Who the fuck does he think he is. He doesn't know me. Damsel in distress my arse. I'm pretty sure smoke was coming out of me ears at this point. He seemed to be amused by my reaction. I looked over his shoulder, minion 1 and 2 were sitting there gapping like fish. I think i'm going to strangle him, scratch that I am.

"Well thanks for your concern but i'm my own hero and I don't need saving. Thanks for your hospitality but I must really be on my way."

I said with a sickly sweet smile but the sarcasm was dripping through my words like venom.

Just as I turned to leave Luke grabbed my arm and spun me back around. This isn't a Salsa dance !!

"Can I help you?"

"You're not going anywhere"

"really and what's stopping me?"

"Me." At this point we were glaring at each other. Well I was shooting daggers and his eyes were dancing with amusement, lust and what seemed to be dead certainty.

I admire his determination, not many people have been stupid enough to stand up to me. It's refreshing and amusing,

Our little staring match was interrupted "ya you can't leave".

That was a big mistake on dumb and dumber's behalf because now they were in my firing line.

"Oh and why is that?"

The two guys seemed to nervous under my gaze, desperately looking for an answer or an escape. Good thing Luke stepped in and saved their asses

"Because we said so".

Who is he my mother? WHOA, hold the truck, they took me to their house and now they won't let me leave.

"So you're kidnapping me?"

"It's not kidnapping" was minion 2's reply.

" oh really, taking me hostage in your house against my will and not allowing me to leave is Kidnapping in my book and the law's"

"Oohh she's got you there Zack" the quieter of the two said. So blondie is Zack. Hmmmm.

"So i'm not allowed leave?"

"There we go, see you're already getting the hang of this." Luke teased as he slung his arm over my shoulder. He leaned down, I could feel his breath on my neck, the tingles running through me like an electric current. My breathing increased. It was driving me insane. Damn Hormones. He seductively whispered in my ear "nice outfit princess."

Strike 2.

I threw his arm off me, trying to compose my thoughts and stepped away. In a deadly calm voice I approached him again

"Who. The. Fuck. Changed. Me." In between each word I poke him in the chest.

"Don't worry Aaron's ma-girlfriend came around and changed you."

It kind of made me feel better knowing they hadn't seen me in my underwear. At least my dignity was still intact.

Although I didn't miss his slip up, ma- . What was he going to say?

They're hiding something. And i'm going to find out what it is.
