Chapter 33 of 43

The rescue

Luna? No sir i'm a Marine3,568 words~18 min read

Lifting my head and allowing it to drop onto the steering wheel repeatedly until the loose hair from my ponytail blurred my vision. I'm not quite sure what this would accomplish but it felt productive.

Bonnie cleared her throat. I tilted my head to glare at her. I am not in the mood. She looked down at me with big puppy dog eyes and a pouty lip. She always does this to get people to forgive her. She hates people being mad at her.

"In my defence-"

"Bonnie if you know what is good for you then you will not finish that sentence."

We sat in silence for a few minutes. I closed my eyes just wishing this was all a bad dream. Bonnie poked my ribs, I didn't move. She poked my arm, I didn't move. She slapped my thigh, I didn't move. Eventually the jabs got harsher and harsher until I looked at her.

"I'm sorry."

I couldn't help but laugh at her fake innocence. I stuck my tongue out at her and she took that as my acceptance of her apology. I sat up and rolled my shoulders. Applying a bit of pressure to the base of my neck trying to work out some knots. I glanced over at Bonnie and I couldn't suppress my laughter. She's slouching with her arms crossed over her chest, eyebrows knitted together in frustration and concentration. Her eyes slighted squinted as she stares at the stray piece of hair that has fallen onto her face.

Like she could feel me staring at her she glanced up at me. Sticking her tongue out at me when I laughed.

"Uhh Lexi, I don't know much about cars but I do know they're not supposed to do that." She pointed at the hood of the car.........now covered in smoke.

I couldn't believe it. My hands scurried to undo my seatbelt and open the car door. I jumped out muttering away to myself "fuck, no, why, ugh." I popped the hood and found the root of the problem. In this weather, in these conditions it would only be my car to overheat!

Fan-fucking-tastic

Oh the irony, if only I had a fan right now. You'd think the weather would be enough to cool it down but with my luck it's not. I've got no way of fixing this, I have no tools, nothing. I took them all out to make room in the car.

THIS IS WHY I DON'T DO NICE THINGS

I pulled the rod securing the bonnet down and slammed the hood closed. I stared at the custom paint job on the hood of my car running through all the possible solutions. I was thinking so much my brain hurt. The cool air wrapped around me and the smoke cleared and I looked up only to look at an empty car. At first confused but then realised Bonnie was standing next to me. I turned around and leaned against my car.

"So we're fucked" Bonnie just stared at me, you could almost see the clogs turning. I knew exactly what she was thinking of and I will not allow it.

"I can mindlink the boys" and there we have it. The sentence that I was absolutely dreading. There was no way under the sun......or moons and stars that I will let that happen.

"No, nope, not even if I was underneath the car. Not going to happen."

She looked at me and the confusion was evident.

"Why?" I started to explain.

"Maybe it's a pride thing but I point blank refuse to ask them for help and see the smug look on their faces as they "rescue" our asses once again. Not going to happen this time."

She simply nodded in agreement, "ok we're strong independent women we don't need them."

This may seem selfish but we told the boys we'd be back late tomorrow. We rang them earlier when we realised it was 7 fucking hours away. They were NOT happy with that news. There was a lot of shouting so we just quickly hung up.

The two of us just stood there, staring at the empty open road. It's a beautiful place. However not as nice as my cosy bed so I need to get my shit together and form a plan. I prefer to take control something Luke isn't quite happy about.

We weren't that far from the diner but far enough for it to be miles of open road. I knew if we went back we could get petrol, tools, food and heat. So I turned to Bonnie, I knew she was not going to like this. We're both wrecked and she's not really dressed for a few miles worth of a walk.

I pushed myself off the hood of the car and walked around to the back seat. Between all the boxes and bags I recognised my own gear bag. It's buried under everything and of course right in the middle. Why didn't I take it out before we just piled everything in? I leaned in, the corner of a box sticking into my pelvis, my boobs being squished, one leg in the air for added reach and my arms stretched to the limit. I began to move bags and boxes my entire weight supported by god only knows what. These aren't light either. I vaguely heard Bonnie calling me and laughing at me, I'm just thankful her phone is dead so she can't use this for blackmail. Eventually I got it, and stood up trying to preserve the last bit of dignity I have. You'd swear after that my car was 9ft wide and deep.

I rested my gear bag on the top layer of the strangely organised and compacted mess. Bonnie rested on the car door, her head resting on her hands which were thrown over the frame of the door. I could feel her intense gaze as I unzipped the bag. It's my training bag and I couldn't be happier that I left it in the car. The one time i'm thankful for having a bit of a lazy streak. I moved my shorts, various tops......and an odd sock? I swear I could hear angels sing as I uncovered the lost treasure of Atlantis......well that's what it felt like anyway. The sight of multiple water bottles, cheeky chocolate bars, protein bars and trainers that I could give to Bonnie was one of the best things so far this night.

I looked up at Bonnie and she looked like she was about to give up

"i'm not going to like this am I?"

I just placed the trainers on the floor next to her feet. She huffed and used me to balance herself. Once she had composed herself, I told her the plan.

This is only the start of what is sure to be a long night.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We've been walking for an hour. Under the same dull sky brought alive by the twinkle of a thousand stars. It was so quite I could almost hear the moon howl. Silence under this black sky and shadows cast by the giant trees are eery.
It's been an hour of the same thing. Right foot, left foot, head forward, arms linked. The only thing changing was the irregular loose debris scattered on the road that showed no sign of presenting a pattern.
It wasn't an uncomfortable silence but I felt the need to fill it. It's unnecessary and unnerving. Bonnie and I are never this quite when we're alone not to mention when we're together. I guess we're both focused on the task at hand but who says we can't have a little fun?
I tightened the bag on my shoulder and made sure our arms were properly linked. I pulled bonnie as close as possible and began to skip. At first she was confused but soon joined.
"We're off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of oz."
We've gotten so close that she didn't even question me. I repeated the same line 15 times, I was going for a world record. Well honestly I couldn't remember the rest. I was going strong until I was cut off with a simple "alright shut up" and a laugh. I stopped walking and stared at Bonnie
"well then",
crossing my arms I looked away. Refusing to look at her or move she soon apologised and once again we were on our way.
We had been quiet for a while minus the random outbursts of song. I also lost track of time a while ago but at this point I couldn't care. We have a vague idea of where we're going and on the bright side the sun will come out soon anyway. See always thinking positive. During our quiet spells something had been eating away at me. In a quiet voice, half hoping she wouldn't hear me so at least I could say I tried, I asked the question that has been on my mind well since the start of this whole adventure.
"Why did I stay?"
From the corner of her eye she glanced at me and then looked straight ahead once again. I know she heard me, she gave that away by looking at me but she remained quiet. So I did the same. Neither of us spoke for about two minutes but it felt like years, the silence had become uncomfortable and I was a few second away from making the awkward turtle hand actions.
Bonnie had distanced herself from me and her arm now rested by her side. Her voice low but strong
"are you having doubts?"
I don't think I am. Sure i've imagined what my life would be without all this but I don't want to find out for sure. I'm surrounded by the ones I love who make me laugh and will protect me with their lives. I have a boyfriend who would give me the world and even the thought of him awakens the butterflies in my stomach. I have a job and a purpose. What is there to doubt? My sanity maybe.
"No" I was no longer whispering. I know where my heart lies and it's with the pack. "Then why ask?" Her curiosity seeping through her words.
"I'm looking for answers. I went against everything I know, everything I am. It's like I became a completely different person. I didn't run, I didn't fight. I let all this happen. Why?"
She just smiled and glanced at me. Not the reaction I was expecting.
"In werewolf books they talk about a bond, which to some extend I guess is true. Yet human mates are not as frequent as they make them out to be. There's only a handful every 100 years or something like that. We hear stories of human mates but until you I never thought it was possible. You're well to be quite honest to us you're as strange as we are to you. Sure we interact with humans on a daily basis but never at this level. God only knows what Luke is going through because he's never had to handle a human girl and you are so unique. I've observed other human girls, their habits and emotions.....not in a creepy way, and even from what I know you're different. For humans there is no 'bond' for lack of a better word. Growing up as a werewolf it's your mate, your mate, your mate. That's all we think about, only one person we have eyes for. Yet with humans it's whoever floats your boat at that time. So really the only thing I can think of is if part of you wanted to stay, to see how things would play out. Maybe you didn't run or fight because with Luke around you knew it was right and didn't want to."
I hung onto every word because I really do value her opinion. I've gotten close to Bonnie and despite our obvious differences we understand each other. I kind of understand what she's saying. Maybe it was nothing to do with them, maybe it is just me.
We continued to walk until the sky was illuminated by the giant sign for the diner and garage. We both stared at each other and squealed, jumping up and down like kids in a candy store. We ran the last few metres. The door to the diner swung open with a ding from the bell. There were one or two customers but other than that the place was dead. The same waitress who had served us was behind the counter doing a crossword. She looked up and smiled.
"Back already?" We both chuckled
"of course, we couldn't stand only having one slice, is it still free?"
I gave her a cheeky wink but part of me was kinda hoping she'd say yes. She looked us up and down
"you girls look worse for wear, i'm sorry but i'm just being brutally honest......what happened to you two?"
We took a seat and explained what happened. She acted like a concerned mother. She handed us drinks and plates of food saying it was on the house as she was concerned for our health. I couldn't understand how she could afford to give out so much free food until I found out she and her husband owned the place, including the garage. She ran the diner and he ran the garage.
After we finished our food she was on the phone to her husband who was undoubtably asleep before she had rang. She did not ask, she ordered him to get his lazy ass out of bed and open the garage. We insisted that it wasn't necessary, both of us ridden with guilt but she simply hushed us. So we sat in our booth like good girls finishing our milkshakes.
Within minutes we heard a car pull into the car park. A man in his late fifties walked through the door, he had a kind face and his eyes lit up when he saw Mrs. Claus. That's something I could only wish for. The way he looked at her like she was his life, the only thing in the world even after 20 years of marriage. We practically know their entire life story by now, she sure can talk but she was so full of love that we didn't mind.
They began to talk and I over heard key words but not enough to piece together what they were planning. Eventually they walked over to us, he looked tired but she looked over joyed. She shooed us out of the booth without any explanation. Like sheep we were herded to the garage, no one had uttered a word yet. He took a bunch a keys from his pocket, his shaky hands unlocked the door and found the light switch. For the first time I heard his voice, it was gruff and deep.
"Take what you need and i'll give you a lift to your car."
Is he really giving me free reign? Hmmm I think I might need a few more things then I initially believed.
Bonnie stood by the door and after 20 minutes she dragged me out with a firm grip on her ear. I started giving out and clutched onto the door, he just laughed at us and shook his head. I think he's finally warming up to us. He opened the car door and we sat inside. There was once again another silence, he informed us that the radio was broken. Bonnie elbowed me in the ribs so I glared at her, she simply nodded her head towards the radio.
Did she really want me too? Would they really want to listen to me? She must have a screw loose because I don't sing, sure I sang before but that was a one off.
Bonnie continued to nudge me and she had that look, the look that your mother gives you to make you say hi to relatives. She whispered "i'll join in, I promise." I've never heard Bonnie sing, I didn't know she could. So maybe I should give it a go, it's only them. I just rolled my eyes at her but my desire to hear her singing voice overtook my stubbornness.
I sat up straight and just let the lyrics flow
"Just a small town girl, Livin' in a lonely world She took the midnight train Goin' anywhere" his eyes flickered to me in the rear view mirror and he smiled. Bonnie joined in
"Just a city boy Born and raised in South Detroit" we were singing in perfect harmony. She has an amazing voice. I can't believe it. She's never sang for me before, the little witch.
We sang the entire way to the car, he even joined in a few times. We pulled up to my baby and I jumped out, instead of driving away like I thought he would he stayed with us. The headlights providing a source of light and he gave me a hand. We were on the road again in no time. It's people like that couple that restore my faith in humanity. They were so nice I wanted to bring them home.
Bonnie and I took turns driving and sleeping. We stopped at every pit stop to get food and use the bathroom, a girl has needs. It felt like we went through the four seasons, we experienced rain, wind, sunrise, everything.
Finally we are on familiar roads, look out the bitches are back in town. Bonnie had taken us on the back roads but we could make out the buildings in the distance. We still have a 20 minute drive to go. The road was very quiet, almost too quiet. From the corner of my eye I saw a few leaves rustle. I guess it's just the wind. I kept my eyes on the road until I saw something in the bushes. I might be going crazy but just to make sure
"Bonnie do you see that?" She began to look around
"we're being followed aren't we?" I saw her nod. My eyes went back to the road only to see a wolf sitting there. I slammed on the breaks and hoped to god I wouldn't run him over. The car came to a screeching stop and we slammed back into our seat. Bonnie lifted her head and sniffed,
"they're ours" she muttered.
This calmed me a bit but what are they doing here? The giant wold approached the car. He nudged my door so I rolled down the window. I wasn't going to open the door. He stuck his head in the window and sniffed me and looked at Bonnie. He stepped back and howled. That's it, he began running, he just left us. Suddenly he was joined by 5 other wolves.
"Come on, they know we're home."
I just stared at Bonnie before adjusting my seatbelt. That's definitely going to bruise. The engine roared and once again we were on our way. After this i'm not driving for a year.
Eventually I saw the giant black gates. I'm surprised we didn't get lost again. The gates were wide open, i'm not looking forward to this. They're never open, we're so in trouble. We have a long driveway but not long enough to prepare myself for what was to come. The front door was also wide open and the two boys are hurdling towards us. I barely had time to stop the car. Both doors were ripped open.
"Oh watch the bloody car"
I took my seatbelt off and slowly got out of the car. His chest was heaving and he looked like he was ready to kill. I put my hand on his chest to push him back so I could close my car door. The door clicked and suddenly I was pushed against it.
"Hey, you ok?" He just glared at me.
"Don't you ever fucking do that again, I swear to god princess you're never leaving my arms." He's such a drama queen.
"It was only one night." I heard Zach shout from one of the windows
"I can feel his anger from here." I wrapped my arms around him and whispered sorry. I tried to pull back but he wasn't having any of it.
Luke's head was buried in my neck but there was nothing innocent about it. He he was kissing me ever so gently but it didn't stop there. His warm lips soon found their way to my mark and I had to hold back a moan. I knew he'd do this, he's doing it to punish me but holy crap it feels so good. My breathing increased and I managed to breathlessly whisper "lets go get food and go to sleep."
He wouldn't let me go all night but I loved it. We ordered pizza and watched movies on the couch. Both phones were turned off and it was a perfect night. Was it a date night? I don't care, it's just what I need. That night I fell asleep with my head on Luke's chest and his strong arms around me.
