The sun was beating down on me, normally the heat never bothered me but this isn't just heat it's the humidity. My hair grew faster than a child's christmas list. The beast has been awoken.
This is very unlike me. I have no idea where I am going and right now I don't want to know. I'm just going to keep driving until I form a plan like a sailor drinking himself sober.
"I wanna see your peacock, -cock, -cock"
The unmistakable sound of my ring tone cut off my mini battle with myself. Bringing back memories of my troop. Especially one day in particular, when Scott dared me to change my ring tone to Katy Perry's song "Peacock". Two years and three phones later I still haven't chickened out. Speak of the devil
"Hello welcome to the playboy mansion, i'm Candy Apple and i'll be your bunny tonight. How may I help you?"
I asked in the most seductive voice I could muster without ruining my act by laughing.
"One day it's going to be your father and he's going to have a heart attack and then send a troop after you. I won't save your ass then"
with that you couldn't help but laugh. Messing with Scott is too easy.
"Anyway chica how are you holding up? Any news? Any guys? I am fine thanks for asking...."
But he was quickly interrupted by a slightly softer voice shouting
"leave the poor girl alone"
I always thought they were a great match. Scott is a diva, drama queen, loud the complete opposite to Dave. Dave is the level-headed, quiet, manlier one of the two. But they really do set the relationship goals. Did I mention they're gay and have been going out since before i've know them, so that's about 5 years.
"YO"
"ALEX"
"HUN"
"ALEXANDRIA"
He always did know how to push my buttons and get a reaction out of me. I earned a reputation as a short fuse and Scott always had a lighter.
"Repeat that, I dare you"
Just as I said that the car hit something, swerved and then started leaning to one side. Shit my tyre.
Scott was still blabbering on the phone, filling me in on all the gossip I missed out on. They were supposed to join me on this trip but I was released from hospital early and insisted that I go. I parked my baby at the side of the road. For such an open road it's quite empty. I didn't think too much into it I was more focused on my car. I stepped out and put my phone on speaker then placed it on the roof of the car.
I could feel eyes on me. Raking up and down my body, making me feel a bit self-conscious. Watching my every move. After taking off the old tyre I stood up and looked around, no one, nothing not even a breeze. Maybe I am crazy.
I said a few 'yeah's, wow's, really's' to keep Scott happy and got on with changing the tyre. Happy wife, happy life. Just as I was finished I wiped my hands off my jeans. Ah the freedom of being an adult. I picked up my phone and brought it to my ear. Remembering to turn off the speaker....this time. Just as I turned around to face the forest. Which I hadn't even noticed before. That is not like me. I must be really out of it. I must of taken a harder hit than I thought the other day.
I had walked to a nearby Cafe looking to get a nice brownie seeing I don't drink tea or coffee. Black coffee never appealed to me, i'm bitter enough.
I decided to take a shortcut through a small park I had seen on my way over. Exploring new areas doesn't scare me. I think of it as an adventure and new stories to tell.
Just as I came out the other side I saw a little girl no older than 7 with blonde hair and huge doe like forest green eyes run into the road. She was the type of girl who would melt your heart. No one seemed to notice that she was on her own or in the middle of the road.
I heard what sounded like a 4.3 L Vortec V6 engine, in other words a van, round the corner. At the speed he was travelling I knew with an engine like that he wouldn't be able to stop in time.
So I ran out into the road grabbed the girl by the waist and wrapped myself around her, almost like a human shield. I didn't even attempt to move, it would have just insulted the laws of physics and my judgement. At least by standing still I could brace myself and minimise the damage. My back got the full impact of the hit. From the windscreen to the road. I could tell I was bleeding, I had hit my face pretty hard as well but I needed to make sure she was ok.
She was a little shaken up but other than that and a few scratches she seemed to be fine. It was then a boy around 9 came running towards us. He thanked me then picked up his sister and ran away. My back hurt to much to be able to catch them. That was the last I saw of them. An ambulance was called and I was stitched up. I protested, ensuring them I was capable of bandaging myself up but the paramedics were persistent. They told me to check in with the hospital if I had any more symptoms.
A giggle and Scotts husky voice saying "stop that" brought me back from my flashback. I don't even want to think of what was going on there. Oh my virgin ears. I looked at the woods and that's when I saw it. It couldn't be. I shook my head, blinked twice and rubbed my eyes. Yes it's definitely there.
"Uh Scott, Dave I have to go, some-something uh something came up. Lot's of love AND NO MAKING BABIES, i'm too young and fabulous to be an aunt yet."
I was frozen. It couldn't be.
There were the blue eyes I had been dreaming of, staring back at me. I didn't dare blink in case they would disappear like they had done too many times before.
I forced myself to look somewhere else, anywhere. I don't like the affect those eyes have on me. The ability to capture my full attention, make me forget my surroundings and what I was thinking.
It was the first time I noticed what the eyes belong too. Usually the eyes are all I see. Like a scene from Alice in Wonderland they floated. The chance of me ever finding eyes that come this close to the ones in my dreams is close to zero. Maybe I am crazy or maybe i'm just determined but I am not letting them slip through my fingers again. With a million questions running through my mind I began walking towards the woods. The eyes were kind of clouded over and as the leaves crunched beneath my feet they seemed to snap out of their daze, giving me a clear view of those crystal baby blue eyes.
Should I move? Should I run? - towards whatever's behind the bush or to the car? I could make it to the car. So many thoughts swirling around in my little head. Going around and around and aroun- the leaves rustled. Out of the top of the bush I could see a pair of black ears. One with a white tip.
Now confident it wasn't a creepy 40 year old truck driver following me waiting to rape me, I relaxed slightly. The eyes watched my every move, making me doubt if I should get any closer. I cannot keep referring to them as the eyes. These eyes belong to some living creature and I am not missing what could be my only opportunity to get answers.
The bush started rustling and a huge black wolf emerged. Standing tall at six foot, his jet black fur covers 90% of his muscular body. His white chest sticking out as he sits on his hind legs. With each exhale his white tipped ear twitches slightly in my direction. His eyes locked on me. I was itching to run my hand through his silky coat. I have always had a weak spot for animals and that's why I started out in the K-9 unit.
We are taught to fight men and women with guns or knives, how to survive in the harshest of conditions but giant wolves are not part of the training program. I can build a trap that would string him up like a piece of meat, I can skin him alive and build a fire to cook the meat until it fell off his bones. Anything to survive but he has not yet posed a threat......yet.
Almost like he could read my mind, this monster of a wolf put it's head down and slowly approached me. My breath hitched and he stopped, it was an unintentional panic response. I am allowing this animal to get close enough to kill me all because I can not bring myself to scare it off. I felt like the wolf was just as intrigued with me as I was with him.
He was so close we were face to snout. His hot breath fanning over my face, Weirdly I couldn't smell any blood or flesh. That's good?! Or maybe it just means he's in need of a meal. I closed my eyes to calm myself. My body went rigid so I don't accidentally flinch and scare him into attacking. He circled me sniffing my hair, nuzzling into me a few times. I don't know much about the behaviour patterns of wolves but the fact he is acting like a domesticated dog, I can deduct that this is peculiar.
The beast seemed to know where I was hurt. He sniffed around my wounds, which were fully covered so he couldn't have seen them. He was careful around my back. Almost like he didn't want to hurt me.
A whine caught my attention and made me open my eyes. The wolf was sitting in front of me nuzzling my leg. He has shown no sign of aggressive behaviour I was half expecting to find him wearing a collar. His bright pink tongue hung from his mouth, exposing his razor sharp teeth. It did make me rethink getting this close but not enough to move. I may be trained to be ruthless and to eliminated the threats but i'm an animal lover. I'm the type of person who could watch people die in movies but as soon as animals die i'll be in tears.
I hesitantly put my hand on his back. His head snapped up towards me. I quickly removed my hand, as any sane person would do. I guess we're just not that close yet. But he just whined almost like he was complaining? Then rubbed his head off my hand. This encouraged me to scratch behind his ear. I swear I heard him purring as he leaned into my hand. Oh he's not much different to a dog. I could get used to this. I'll put him in the back of the car and he can stick his head out the window and i'll use him as a blanket because HE'S SO FLUFF- my thoughts were cut short by the wolf tensing.
You know what i'm sick of referring to him as "the wolf" or "the eyes" from now on I knight him Sir Wolfy McFluffy. I may be a Marine but a cute animal is a cute animal.
"Um are you ok?" I have resorted to talking to animals, who am I? Dr.Dolittle?. Wolfy gave me the weirdest look, the look I imagine people giving me if they could read my mind. Then he did what I can only explain as a wolfy chuckle.
I heard branches snapping in the woods. There's something else out there. Wolfy stepped back from me, stood by my side and was staring at the forest, like I was.
I noticed we were not alone. There were now two sets of eyes in the forest but they weren't staring at the gigantic wolf they were staring at me. As if i'm the out of place creature. Like they were looking into my soul. Might need a flashlight guys. It's pretty dark in there.
A low warning growl left Wolfy's lips. Do wolves have lips? That's a thought for another day. They stepped out of the forest like Wolfy had done minutes? Hours? Seconds? Before. To be honest I don't know how long i've been standing here with McFluffy.
Low and behold two more wolves emerged. Slightly smaller than Wolfy but still looked threatening. One had a reddish, Auburn coat and the other was a light beige. My art teacher would be so proud. As if on cue they tilted their heads to the side and looked down. It was almost like a sign of submission.
I let out a breath that I didn't even know I was holding. Suddenly three sets of eyes were on me. I started to feel uncomfortable. Things started spinning, I was light headed. I haven't eaten in 19 hours.
The Black spots started to cloud my vision as have have more times than I wish to admit. This is nothing new to me. At first they were worried that it was a sign of a bleed in the brain but two weeks later I was released from hospital with a prescription. Everything was blurring into one. I began to sway. I knew there was no point fighting it, the darkness always won.
