Chapter 40
âHmmâ¦â Senior Yancey thought about it seriously. âHe hasnât, I think. That girl doesnât count.â
So there was a girl in his life?
Violet did not dig deeper into it. It was none of her business, after all.
He was a very outstanding, desirable person. Furthermore, everyone had a past.
âAlright, watch your TV,â Senior Yancey said in a kind voice. âI have other things to do, so Iâll hang up first.â
âOkay, bye grandpa,â Violet replied sweetly too.
The old man ended the call. Violet put down the receiver and continued to slip through the channels on the television. with the remote control.
She did not feel out of place at all, living in Jackâs home.
The light in the study on the second floor shone brightly. Jack sat at the desk going through his email inbox while his long and slender fingers typed away on the keyboard. Just as he was done typing out an email, his phone rang. He ran through the message for errors before sending the email out.
He picked up his phone only after turning his computer off. Before he accepted the call, he glanced at the caller ID. âHi, grandpa.â
âWhy arenât you watching TV with her downstairs?â Senior Yancey reprimanded.
Jack was slightly startled upon hearing those words. âHave you installed security cameras in house?â
my
âIâve just given Zoey a call. She said that Vi is watching TV alone downstairs.â His grandfather sounded dissatisfied. âWhy arenât you spending time with her? Is this how you treat guests?â
âWhy should I spend time with her?â Jack protested. âIâm busy with work.â
âBecause sheâs Mrs. Yancey! If you donât spend time with her, who will? Youâre the one who got Michael to bring her back, okay?â Senior Yancey reminded. âWhat did Michael say again when he came to fetch her? He was following your orders and had come to fetch Mrs. Yancey!â
âGrandpa, you know very well thatâ¦â
âI donât know, I donât know! I donât know anything! I only believe what I hear!â Senior Yancey declared in a very stern voice. âAll I know is that you need to go downstairs right this moment and spend time with her. If you still have to work now, that means thereâs a problem with your efficiency at work during the daytime! You need to reflect on yourself! Reflect on yourself properly!â
âI..â Jack was speechless.
âYou what? You? Go quickly!â
Jack let out a long inward sigh. âI know.â
âGood boy!â Only then did Senior Yancey feel relieved. âGo downstairs and have a chat with her. How awkward must she be! Sheâs a girl, you must be more mindful of how she feels.â
Then, his grandfather hung up the call.
Jack took a deep breath. After some thought, he got up to go downstairs.
This girl was a force to be reckoned with. She had won his grandfatherâs heart. Unfortunately, that meant she might become impossible to shake off in the future.
Jack was still upstairs. With both hands in his pockets, he walked down the stairs very lightly, one step at a time. His eyes fell on Violetâs back. This girl had a pure countenance and a dauntless spirit.
It was only after he had reached the landing downstairs that he realized she was watching a show about a mouse and a cat, Was that not a cartoon? How childish was she?
Jack came and sat down beside her, Only then did Violet notice and turn to glance at him.
Jack kept his eyes on the television. âDo you feel awkward?â
âWhat?â Violet did not understand.
âIâm asking you, do you feel awkward? Watching TV alone here.â
âItâs alright.â She laughed.

Jack raised an eyebrow. âI knew you wouldnât feel awkward. Who are we talking about? Youâre thick-
skinned and obtuse. You donât even know how to spell âawkward, do you?â
âDid grandpa get you to come downstairs?â Violet did not want to engage in a spat with him. She guessed it right the first
time.
Jack did not answer.
Violet chuckled. âSeems like grandpaâs the only one in the world who can control you.â
Jack looked sharp. He threw her a fake smile. âHeâs my grandpa too so donât âgrandpaâ here and there.
Donât keep thinking about winning his heart.â
âGrandpa opened his heart to me himself, Iâve never asked for it!â Violet chortled while glancing at him.
She was somewhat pleased. âLet my mother go. I plan to leave this city with her, no worries. We wonât be a threat to you. I wonât tell anyone about your eyes! We plan to fly far away!â
