Chapter 33
Lily kept her eyes lowered as she explained in a soft but steady tone. âI didnât call you because I know you were coming back. Also, theyâve just arrived. I wasnât sure whether they were going to stay around for long.â
âIs that so? Samanthaâs chest heaved. Her darkened face hid her impatience as she asked, âAre you sure now?â
Lily kept her eyes fixated on Samanthaâs feet. âIâm certain. Theyâll be living here.â
Samantha was hot under the collar. She was extremely unhappy, but it would not be good for her to get angry.
A short silence filled the room.
âMadam,â Lily lifted her head. She maintained the tone of voice she had been using. âPerhaps the president doesnât have any hidden agenda.â
Samantha gave her a frosty glance. âZephyr and Dustin? With the sole exception of Michael, they are Jackâs most capable men!â she emphasized tensely.
âJack cares about his grandfather the most, so naturally, he wanted his trusted right-hand men to come here and take care of him. His grandfather goes out often, and safety comes first,â Lily advised. âAs long as you donât pick a fight with them, everything will be peaceful and fine.â
âPeaceful and fine?â Samantha rolled her eyes. She turned around to get her bathrobe and shower cap. âTell me. What else has happened while I was away?â
The first thing Lily thought of was Violet. Nevertheless, she did not know whether she ought to mention her.
She was afraid that Samantha would see red if she did.
This silence was strange.
The middle-aged woman paused and turned around. âAre you hiding something from me?â Her eyes were cold. âLily?â She began taking steps towards her. âExactly whose side are you on?â
âMadam,â Lily maintained her composure. âCanât you see whose side Iâm on?â
âYouâve changed!â Samantha gazed at her frigidly. âYouâre no longer the Lily I knew! Youâll betray me one day. Youâre already talking to Jack!â She was on tenterhooks.
âHow can I betray you when weâre both in the same boat?â Lily gave a slight frown. âHow can you still feel safe when it comes to me?!â
Lily shouted. Shaken up, Samanthaâs mind cleared up significantly.
âMy apologies, madam,â Lily immediately acknowledged that she should not have reacted that way. It was problematic.
âEnough, I donât want to hear about your theories.â Samantha closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
âTell me something I want to hear.â
Lily thought about it before asking, âDo you know about the presidentâs wedding?â
âIt was called off because that girl dumped him. That felt good,â Samantha could not help but sneer when she recalled the scenes on the television. âHis humiliation was broadcasted beyond this country, even.â
However, Lily did not find it funny. âMiss Yeager had stayed here for a week,â she reported.
Samanthaâs heart ski pped a beat. She stared at her with rapt attention, doubting her own ears. âWhat?
Here?â
âYes, here,â Lily said, âJackâs grandfather brought her back today, but Michael then took her away.â
Samantha blinked. âWhat is the meaning of this? Donât the Yanceys have a score to settle with her?
Have they made peace?â she asked in shock.
âI heard that she stayed the night at Goldbay Estate yesterday.â Lily did not answer her questions. She continued speaking, âItâs absolutely true.â
The middle-aged woman narrowed her eyes at her. For a moment, she wondered if she was hearing things.
âMichael said that he was followed the presidentâs orders and had come to fetch Mrs. Yancey,â Lily spoke softly, âSenior Yancey is very fond of Miss Yeager.â
âBut why did she stay here for a week? She pulled off such a disgraceful stunt at the wedding! Isnât grandpa angry?â Samantha could not accept this. She thought she was familiar with the old manâs temper. âItâs impossible!â
âSenior Yancey suffered a stroke because of the stunt she pulled. Maybe she stayed to take care of him for a week to atone for what she did. At any rate, the old man brought her home and theyâve been getting along well.â This was everything Lily

knew.
âAtone?â
âMiss Yeager doesnât have any intention of escaping. She seems quite at home here. Mr. Yancey came and fetched her yesterday evening.â Lily said. âI donât know what happened last night though. Her entire body is injured when she came back with the old man today. There are bruises on her face and forehead.â Lily was merely a housekeeper who was tasked with helping Violet apply the medicine on her injuries. Naturally, she had not dared to ask questions.
