Chapter 22
âHey,â
Violet snapped back to her senses. She stretched out an arm to take the phone. The moment she put it to her ear, she heard her motherâs agitated voice. âHello? Is this Violet?â
âMother, itâs me.â She felt joyful.
âHow are you, Violet? Are you alright?â Her mother was full of worry. âDid Theo Yeager look for trouble?
Did the Yanceys?â
âNo, no, nobody looked for trouble. Donât worry!â She smiled and reassured softly, âIâm pretty good, really. What about you? Are they good to you?â
âIâm good too. I have food, water, and shelter. Just worried about you.â
âWhere are you?â Violet asked. Her eyes accidentally met Jackâs; Violet pursed her lips.
The other end of the phone call was quiet for a moment before the middle-aged womanâs small voice said, âIâm not allowed to tell you. Donât worry, Iâm alright.â
Violet did not press into the matter. âI might be a little busy from now on, mother. I wonât be able to follow up with you much so you must take good care of yourself. Believe me, weâll see each other very soon.â
âWhy are they not planning to let me go? Did they do anything to you?â
âNo, mother. Itâs a long story. Whatever it is, Iâll think of a way. Just hold on for a while more.â
âHow can the Yanceys not be angry when youâve humiliated them at the wedding?â Xayah was about to say that she would have been angry if she had been in their shoes, but she decided against it.
âApologize properly to them and do your best to defuse the situation, alright?â
âLetâs not talk about the past,â said Violet hurriedly. âIâll handle it.â
âIâm alright, just really worried about you, Vi.â

âMother, Iâm really okay. Really.â Violet was very sensible. She smiled and said, âIâll be starting work soon. We can reunite once Iâm settled in. Itâs getting late, you should rest.â
âOkay. You should sleep early too.â
Violet reluctantly hung up the phone. Her mother would be heartbroken to see her current condition.
She bend down and placed his phone down lightly on the coffee table in front of him.
It was as she had expected: Her mother was being taken good care of. Jack was quite the gentleman, which was more than she could say for Theo Henry Yeager.
However, Violet did not plan to thank him. In low spirits, she turned around to leave.
âWait.â
Violet halted without looking behind her.
After a while, Jackâs cool and clear voice spoke, âDonât be getting ideas no matter how much my grandfather likes you. Weâre not a family you can casually draw close to. Iâm giving you this piece of advice in goodwill so you wonât regret it in the future.â
Violet smiled softly. She turned and asked, âI heard rumors that the old Yancey manor is haunted. So thatâs true, isnât that?â
âItâs none of your business. Stop listening to gossip. Get out.â
She had no interest in the subject matter at all. Violet turned and left.
The Yanceys were strange, save for Jackâs grandfather. He seemed a little more normal.
Not long after Violet had left, Jack received a phone call from Michael. He put on his Bluetooth earphones.
âMr. Yancey, the people from just now, during the evening, donât seem to be from the same killer mastermind from before,â Michael reported, âWeâre still looking into this, should be able to come up with results by tomorrow evening at the earliest.â
âI felt that too,â Jack replied in a deep and low voice, âTheir fighting skills are very mediocre. There was no way they could have succeeded in killing me.â
âMr. Yancey,â Michael added apologetically. âPlease donât be angry with me for bringing Miss Yeager back to your mansion without your permission. I did it because Theo Yeager may frame us for Miss Yeagerâs murder if she is killed, seeing how she would have been last seen leaving your mansion.
What she did at the wedding is enough to justify your supposed 1/2

motive for murder.â
âDoes Theo Yeager really want to kill her?â Jackâs voice was cold.
âYes,â Michael said, âIf I had left a few seconds earlier, Violet would most probably be dead.â
âWhat a savage,â Jack gave a bitter laugh. âTo hurt his own daughter like that.â
âMr. Yancey, Iâve uncovered something else.â
Jack had picked up a teacup and was inspecting it closely. âTell me.â
âBeryl Yeager is still alive. She doesnât want to marry into the Yancey family because sheâs afraid of dying. Something to do with the hauntings at the Yancey manor. So she orchestrated the car accident.
Her mother Yvette West knows about this, Theo Yeager doesnât.â
Jack looked impassive. âHave all the online posts about the haunting been deleted?â
