Chapter 13
âIâm asking you! Whereâs my mother?!â Violet said in a hostile tone. She would not let him push her around.
âYour mother will remain in my care for a while more.â Jack made his decision.
He swirled his glass of liquor lightly and spoke in a calm voice, âItâs better for you to forget about what happened tonight. Forget it all. Or things wonât be good for you.â
His amazing calmness made her feel as though he was in the eye of a roaring storm.
He was threatening her!
âJack Yancey!â Violet was not st upid. She forced her rage down.
âAre you using my mother to blackmail me because of what I saw just now?â She raised her voice.
He did not respond.
Violet felt miffed. âHave you forgotten who helped you? I took care of a few of those jerks for you! Also, Iâm not the only one who knows about what has happened!â
Jack did not deny her words. He merely remained silent.
However, he did not wish to thank her. She was the one who had backed out of a wedding in front of the entire world and embarrassed him. The incident had even made headlines. She owed him for this for the rest of their lives.
Violet did not know what he was thinking. She pronounced quickly, âDonât worry! Weâll never have to cross paths again after you give my mother back to me! I really want nothing to do with you!â
âWhy should I trust you?â Both Jackâs expression and tone of voice were chilly.
âWhy donât you feel that you can trust me? What have your matters got to do with me? Are you too engrossed in what has happened? Weâre not even married yet! Let my mother go and weâll both disappear from your sight!â
Once again, she mentioned the wedding! Jack was displeased.
His expression darkened. He tilted his head and downed the liquor in the glass.
âTheo Yeager trusted you too much. He trusted that youâd marry into the Yancey family obediently. Do you know how screwed he is right now? The price to pay for trusting you is never being able to get back on oneâs feet.â
âHe was asking for it!â She flared up the moment Theo Yeagerâs name was mentioned. âAnd these are two different things! I have beef with him! Iâm alright with you!â
Jack did not want to believe her.
The phone rang while the two of them were at a stalemate.
Jack casually took out his phone and, upon seeing the caller ID, did not pick up immediately.
Instead, he looked up at the girl who stood not far from him and raised his eyebrows.
Then, he spoke slowly, âItâs my grandfather. You better keep quiet or youâll never see your mother again in this lifetime.â Every word was laced with a threatening resonance even though his voice was low.
Violet furiously glared at him as his long finger skim across the slide-to-answer bar.
âHi, grandpa.â Jackâs voice was warm and soft. He was smiling, even. It was a 180-degree transformation.
He was such a chameleon. Violet was continually critical of him in her heart.
âDid you bring the young lady out to dinner, Jack?â Senior Yancey could not wait to find out.
âI did.â Jack smiled, brushing off the question.
âWhich restaurant? How was the environment? Was it romantic?â The old man prodded further.
Jack chuckled. âPretty good. Weâre having a candlelit dinner now. Did anything happen?â
Violet snorted. A candlelit dinner?
He was lying through his teeth!
âNothing much, Iâm just asking. Howâs the conversation? Are you happy?â
âPretty good.â
Senior Yancey seemed relieved. âThatâs good, thatâs good. I wonât bother you anymore. Enjoy the rest of your meal. Send

âDonât worry, I will.â Jackâs voice was as warm as the summer.
Violet watched as he ended the call. His smile vanished the moment he put his phone down.
The atmosphere became considerably colder.
âChameleon,â Violet muttered while rolling her eyes at him.
However, Jack had an extremely sharp hearing.
He raised his eyebrows and glanced at her disdainfully with quiet eyes.
âYou can go now, but if you say anything to my grandfather, Iâll ensure your mother dies a tragic death.â
It was obvious that this was not a joke to him.
