âAlso...â Beckham sighed. âThereâs a matter concerning Gwenn.â
Beckham paused before continuing, âGwenn is engaged to Evan Tanner. Although I cannot cancel the engagement for them, I want to make it clear that Gwenn is no longer my adopted daughter and has no connection to me.â
Cherise nodded while pouring orange juice for Serafina. âAll right. Do you want me to go with you to explain to them?â
âNo.â Beckham shook his head gently, âMandy will be there to assist me. Donât you trust her?â
Cherise pursed her lips. âI trust her.â
She couldnât deny that Mandy was much more competent than her in many matters. Since Mandy would be there, Cherise didnât have to worry about her father.
After dinner, Beckham went to get the car while Cherise waited with the children at the parking lot exit.
But before Beckham arrived, a man dressed in black appeared. The man bowed to Cherise politely. âGreetings, my master would like to inquire if you are Cherise Shaw.â
Cherise nodded in confusion. âYes, I am Cherise. Whoâs your master?â She couldnât recall knowing anyone in Ziphon other than Zachary.
âWere you a student in Shawbury?â
Cherise nodded. âYes.â
Shawbury was the town near Shawâs village. But why was he asking her these questions?
âVery well.â The man in black gestured courteously for her to follow him. âMy master said he would like to chat with you.â
Cherise was stunned. She stepped back with the children, saying, âIâm sorry, I donât know your master, and I have no interest in chatting with him.â
âBut my master knows you and wishes to talk to you.â The man in black approached her, smiling politely. âPlease rest assured.
My master is not a bad person. He was just your classmate back in Shawbury.â
Cherise furrowed her brow. âHow is that possible?â
The students in Shawbury were all from the nearby villages. All of them were rural folks. How could there be someone who could afford such a refined servant?
âNothing is impossible.â The man in black continued smiling. âMy master mentioned he used to share a desk with you but later transferred schools. He saw you standing here and recognized you instantly, so he wanted to catch up with you. My master said if you refuse, I must bring you to him by force.â
Cherise furrowed her brow, unable to recall a classmate with such a prominent status. Just as she was about to refuse again, Beckham drove the car out of the underground parking lot.
She pursed her lips, ushered her children to the car, and glanced at the man in black. âTell your master that I have personal matters to attend to. If he wants to see me, we will meet if chance allows.â With that, she entered the car and closed the door.
The man in black frowned, wanting to say something, but Beckhamâs car had already driven away.
âWho was that?â Beckham asked softly as he drove.
Cherise shook her head, âI donât know. He claimed his master wanted to see me because we used to be classmates.â
After saying that, Cherise shrugged helplessly, âWhen I was in school, my classmates were all from the villages near Shawbury;
there wouldnât be anyone with such a prominent status. He must be lying.â
âDo you want to ask Zachary to block the car behind us?â
