Chapter 20: The Smoldering Earth
Despite the calming winds in the Hidden Leaf Village and Renâs hopes of remaining with Mikoto, the war was far from over.
There were two primary battlefronts: the Earth Country and the Wind Country. The Wind Country had long resisted Konohaâs presence, but recent diplomatic pressure and heavy casualties finally drove them to surrender. However, the Earth Country, stubborn and cunning, saw this as the final opportunity to reap rewards before the inevitable end of war. Their resistance grew desperateâand deadly.
When the Hokage summoned Ren, he expected a meeting about village defense or support logistics. Instead, he was given sealed orders for immediate deployment to the Earth Country battlefield.
âI thought I was done with this,â Ren muttered to himself that night, staring at the red ribbon tied around his wrist. It fluttered in the breeze as if whispering Mikotoâs name.
He didnât tell her in person. Instead, he left a noteâone filled with silent promisesâand departed before dawn.
----------------------------------------
The Earth Country front was a smoldering wasteland of stone valleys, shattered hills, and blackened skies. Konoha's forces were stretched thin, and the missions they issued were brutal. Ren operated independently most of the time, moving like a ghost between enemy patrols, eliminating supplies, gathering intelligence, and completing ambushes.
Many of these missions were suicidal, the kind they sent only to expendable shinobi or true monsters of war. Ren returned from each one bloodied but alive, building a silent legend among the troops.
He had grown stronger.
Though he was only at Stage 2 of his Gene Cultivation method, Ren had completely stabilized his Gene Energy Network. His enhanced sensory perception, bodily reinforcement, and reaction time allowed him to clash evenly with enemy Jonin in small engagements. His second unique Gene Technique, Void Pulse Fang, let him generate a concentrated slash of compressed kinetic gene energy that could cut through boulders and disrupt chakra control upon contact. Though not overwhelming, it was versatile and deadly in the right hands.
Still, Ren knew it wasnât enough. He had reached the absolute limit of what Stage 2 could offer. He needed that final pushâthe fire that would break him or transform him.

It came sooner than expected.
----------------------------------------
On the night of Wind Country's official surrender, a large-scale celebration broke out in the Earth Country's hidden encampments. Konohaâs main forces on that front relaxed slightly, but Ren sensed something wrong. The Earth Country wasnât a nation to give up easily.
The next day, under the cover of a heavy dust storm, Earth Country forces launched a final all-out attack across three sectors.
Ren was scouting near one of the rear lines when he was ambushed.
Six elite Joninâhardened war veterans with a combined kill count in the hundredsâsurrounded him in a narrow stone canyon. Ren didnât panic.
He activated his Sharingan immediatelyâtwo tomoe spinning in each eyeâhis body sinking into battle stance.
They didnât waste time on taunts. The first came at him with a massive earth spear technique, while two others used coordinated pincer attacks. Ren used Void Pulse Fang to deflect the first wave, but his body was taking strain.
A searing kunai nicked his ribs. Another Jonin used a sonic genjutsu to disrupt his sense of balance. The ambush was perfectly coordinated. Too perfect.
Blood splattered across the canyon walls. Ren fell to one knee, vision doubling. Yet deep within him, something stirred.
He wasnât ready to die.
No.
Not without seeing her again.
Not without keeping his promise.
âBreak,â he whispered.
His body pulsed with a shock of heat. The world around him slowed. His senses sharpened to unnatural clarity.
The third stage of Gene CultivationâSpiritual Genesis Stageâerupted within him. His Gene Seed expanded explosively, forming deeper neural connections and fortifying his organs. He could feel each muscle fiber surge with newfound force.
His Sharingan began to evolve.
A third tomoe.
Everything snapped into place.
He saw through their patterns, their intent, their chakra flow. He didnât dodge anymoreâhe predicted. Void Pulse Fang evolved into Void Rift Cleave, an extended version that shredded the Earth Joninâs stone armor like paper.
In seconds, two enemies fell. Then another.
One Jonin screamed as Ren blurred behind him and struck a vital point.
The remaining two turned to flee.
Ren appeared in front of them.
âNo escape.â
When it ended, the canyon was stained red, and Ren stood alone, chest heaving.
He had survived. No⦠he had ascended.
----------------------------------------
Three days later, the war officially ended. Earth Country, crushed and disoriented, agreed to a ceasefire under Konohaâs terms.
Ren returned home as a ghost, slipping into the village after dusk. His uniform was torn, his body bandaged, but his spirit was stronger than ever.
She was waiting.
Under a cherry blossom tree, dressed in a red kimono with her hair tied back.
Mikoto.
She didnât say anything at first. Just walked up to him, stared at the cut above his eye, and then hugged him tightly.
âIâm home,â he whispered.
âYouâre late, idiot.â
He smiled. âMissed me?â
She punched his shoulderâlightly. âYou stink.â
He leaned in. âLetâs fix that.â
And then he kissed herâunder the blossoms, under the stars, under the watchful moon.
Neither of them cared who saw.
