Chapter 16: A Promise Fulfilled
The battlefield had quieted, but only in part.
The Thunder Countryâs surrender marked a turning point in the war, yet the clashes with the Earth and Wind nations continued unabated. Explosions still echoed across distant borders, and lists of the fallen were still posted on the walls of the administration building.
But for Uchiha Ren, the war had ended.
After two years of bloodshed and loss, after walking a path lined with corpses and betrayal, he had no desire to return. Neither did the higher-ups at Konoha, who had used him and discarded him as they pleased.
This year, he turned fifteen.
And though the villageâs shadows remained thick, the light had begun to return in slivers.
With his achievements whispered among the clan and his strength impossible to ignore, Ren had become somewhat of a figure among the younger Uchiha. Not quite a prodigy, not yet a leaderâbut no longer a nobody. Clan elders now nodded politely when passing, and whispers followed him in the training fields.
Stolen novel; please report.
But he paid them no mind.
Only one person mattered now.
Mikoto.
He hadnât seen her since his return from the frontlines. Word was that she had been assigned to internal patrols and special guard duty within the Uchiha sector. Ren wasnât surprised. Her grandfather, one of the great elders, had ensured her safety. He had once resented thatânow he was only thankful.
And she had promised him something.
A surprise.
He found her near the lake behind the Uchiha compound, where they used to spar under moonlight. She stood in a soft red kimono, eyes glancing over the water, hair tied back loosely. She turned as he approached, a quiet smile blooming across her face.
"Youâre late," she said.
âIâm here now,â Ren replied, his voice softer than usual.
They talked about small thingsâvillage rumors, clan politics, the state of the war. But beneath it all, tension hung between them, years in the making.
Finally, Mikoto stepped closer, her gaze unwavering.
âYou said youâd come back alive,â she murmured. âI promised Iâd give you something when you did.â
Renâs heart beat faster, but his face remained calm. âIâm ready.â
She took his hand, fingers warm against his cold skin.
âI want to be with you, Ren. Not just as a comrade. As... someone who waits for you. Worries for you. Believes in you.â
He didnât speak.
Instead, he pulled her into an embraceâsilent, firm, and filled with all the emotion he had buried across the years.
Under the stars, with no war, no ranks, no blood between them, Uchiha Ren and Mikoto took their first stepânot as shinobi, but as something more.
