Chapter 6: The Final Blow

Shattered Innocence843 words~5 min read

The days have turned into a blur of whispered conversations, accusatory glances, and a relentless barrage of online vitriol. My reputation, once built on hard work and integrity, lies in tatters. Every step I take feels heavy with the weight of judgment from those who believe the lies. The smear campaign waged by Daniel and my mother has been devastatingly effective.

One afternoon, as I sit with Ethan in his penthouse, trying to plan our next move, a new notification on my phone catches my eye. With a sense of dread, I open it to find another post from Daniel and my mother.

Daniel and Alice’s Mother’s Post:

“We’re thrilled to announce that we’re expecting a baby! Despite the lies and betrayal we’ve faced, we’ve found happiness together. We’re looking forward to starting this new chapter in our lives. Thank you to everyone who has supported us through this difficult time.”

I feel my stomach churn as I read the announcement. The comments are filled with congratulations and well-wishes, a stark contrast to the hate I’ve been receiving.

I stand up, my hands trembling, and excuse myself. I need a moment alone to process this latest blow. I head to the bathroom, locking the door behind me, and sink to the floor. My mind races, and suddenly, I realize I’m late. I haven’t had my period in over a month.

My breath catches, and I quickly grab my purse, digging out a pregnancy test I bought on a whim a few days ago but hadn’t dared to use. With shaking hands, I take the test and wait for what feels like an eternity.

Positive.

I’m pregnant.

The shock and realization hit me all at once. This baby is Daniel’s, conceived before the world came crashing down around me. But who would believe me now?

I return to the living room, my face pale. Ethan looks up, concern etched on his face. “Alice, what’s wrong?”

“I’m pregnant,” I whisper, feeling the weight of the world pressing down on me.

Ethan’s eyes widen. “Are you sure?”

I nod, tears welling up in my eyes. “It’s Daniel’s. But no one will believe me.”

The next few days are a nightmare. When news of my pregnancy leaks, the backlash is immediate and brutal. People accuse me of lying, of not knowing who the father is. The gossip and judgment are relentless.

I sit with Ethan one evening, scrolling through the hateful comments on my latest post. The words blur together, each one a dagger to my heart.

Comment 1: “She doesn’t even know who the father is. What a slut!”

Comment 2: “Bet she’s just saying it’s Daniel’s to stay relevant. Disgusting.”

Comment 3: “Poor baby. It’s going to have a horrible life with a mother like her.”

Comment 4: “She’s a liar and a whore. She doesn’t deserve any sympathy.”

Comment 5: “Daniel and his new family are better off without her. She’s toxic.”

The phone rings, and I see my sister’s name on the screen. I hesitate but finally answer, hoping for a shred of support.

“Alice,” my sister’s voice is cold, devoid of any compassion. “You’re pregnant?”

“Yes,” I say softly. “It’s Daniel’s.”

She scoffs. “You really expect anyone to believe that? You’re a whore, Alice. You’ve slept with so many men, how could you possibly know who the father is?”

“Sarah, please,” I plead, feeling my heart break.

“The baby would be better off with me than with a slut like you,” she snaps. “You’re a disgrace to this family. Don’t contact us again.”

The call ends, and I’m left staring at the screen, feeling more alone than ever. Moments later, I see a new post from my sister, echoing the cruel words she just spoke to me.

Sarah’s Post:

“Alice is pregnant, but she doesn’t know who the father is. As her sister, I believe the baby would be better off with me than with a whore for a mother. She’s a disgrace to our family, and we want nothing to do with her anymore.”

The comments beneath her post are equally vicious, and I can feel the last remnants of my reputation crumbling.

Comment 1: “Her own family doesn’t want her. That says a lot.”

Comment 2: “Poor baby. Hope it gets taken away from her.”

Comment 3: “Sarah’s right. Alice isn’t fit to be a mother.”

Comment 4: “She’s a liar and a disgrace. She deserves everything she’s getting.”

Comment 5: “Thank God the family is stepping in. Someone needs to protect that baby.”

Ethan pulls me into a hug, his presence the only thing keeping me from completely falling apart. “We’ll get through this, Alice. I promise.”

I nod, clinging to him, but inside, I feel a deep sense of despair. The lies and betrayals have left me with nothing but a shattered reputation and a future filled with uncertainty. But I know one thing for sure: I won’t give up. Not now. Not ever. For my sake, and for the sake of my unborn child, I’ll keep fighting.
