Chapter 13: Shadows of the Past

Shattered Innocence812 words~5 min read

Five months into my pregnancy, life finally feels like it’s settling into a peaceful rhythm. Ethan and I have moved into a beautiful house, and every day, we grow more excited about our baby’s arrival. The nursery is nearly finished, filled with soft pastels and little stuffed animals. My reputation, once shattered, is slowly mending as people realize the truth about Daniel and Trixie’s lies.

I’m sitting in the kitchen, enjoying a cup of tea, when Ethan walks in, a tender smile on his face. “How’s our little one doing today?” he asks, placing a gentle hand on my growing belly.

“Active,” I say with a laugh. “I think we’ve got a future soccer player in there.”

Ethan’s eyes sparkle with joy. “I can’t wait to meet our baby.”

Just as I’m about to respond, my phone buzzes on the counter. I glance at the screen and see a notification from a local news site. The headline makes my blood run cold: “Daniel Parker and Trixie Bennett Released from Jail Early.”

My hands tremble as I read the article. Due to some technicalities, Daniel and Trixie have been released early from their short stint in jail for filing a false police report. The fear and anger I thought I’d left behind come rushing back.

Ethan notices the change in my expression. “What’s wrong, Alice?”

“They’re out,” I whisper, my voice shaking. “Daniel and Trixie are out of jail.”

Ethan’s jaw tightens. “We won’t let them hurt you again. We’ll handle this.”

Despite his reassurance, I can’t shake the unease that settles in my stomach. I spend the next few days on edge, constantly looking over my shoulder, half-expecting Daniel or Trixie to appear out of nowhere.

One evening, as Ethan and I are preparing dinner, my phone rings. It’s an unknown number, but something tells me to answer.

“Hello?”

“Alice, it’s me,” a familiar voice says, sending chills down my spine. It’s Daniel. “I just wanted to congratulate you on your pregnancy. Heard you’re living the good life now.”

My heart pounds in my chest. “What do you want, Daniel?”

“Oh, nothing much. Just thought you should know that I haven’t forgotten about you. Neither has Trixie. We’ll be seeing you soon.”

The line goes dead, and I’m left staring at the phone, my mind racing. Ethan takes the phone from my hand, concern etched on his face. “What did he say?”

I swallow hard. “He said they’ll be seeing us soon.”

Ethan pulls me into a tight embrace. “We’ll increase security. They won’t get near you.”

True to his word, Ethan arranges for a security system to be installed around the house and hires a private security team to ensure our safety. But the knowledge that Daniel and Trixie are out there, plotting, casts a dark shadow over our happiness.

A few days later, I receive a message from my old friend, Claire. She’s heard about Daniel and Trixie’s release and offers her support, promising to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity. Her solidarity is a comfort, but the fear lingers.

One afternoon, while I’m at work, I notice a familiar face in the waiting room. It’s Jessica, the woman who once accused me of having an affair with her husband. She walks up to me, an apologetic look on her face.

“Alice, I’m so sorry for everything,” she says, her eyes filled with regret. “I was wrong to believe them. Can we start over?”

I take a deep breath, considering her words. “It’s going to take time, Jessica. But thank you for apologizing.”

As the days pass, I try to focus on the positive. My relationship with Ethan grows stronger, and the support from my friends and colleagues is heartening. Yet, the threat of Daniel and Trixie’s revenge looms over us.

One night, as Ethan and I are getting ready for bed, I feel a sharp pain in my abdomen. Panic grips me as the pain intensifies. “Ethan, something’s wrong,” I gasp.

He rushes to my side, his face pale with worry. “We need to get you to the hospital. Now.”

At the hospital, the doctors run tests to ensure everything is okay. The stress of the past few weeks has taken a toll on my body, but thankfully, the baby is unharmed. The doctor advises me to take it easy and avoid stress as much as possible.

Back at home, Ethan and I lie in bed, his hand resting protectively on my belly. “We’ll get through this, Alice,” he murmurs. “You and our baby are my top priority.”

I nod, tears streaming down my face. “I know. We’ll face whatever comes together.”

Despite the darkness that Daniel and Trixie have tried to bring into our lives, I’m determined to protect my child and our future. With Ethan by my side, I know we can withstand any storm.
