Silver Sheen

The weight of the new silver Guild badge in Kaelan’s palm felt substantial, a tangible symbol of his progress. Back in his modest but clean room at The Gilded Griffin, he laid out his current worldly possessions on the worn wooden table. His new silver badge gleamed beside his growing hoard of coin: 23 Gold Coins, over 150 Silver pieces, and a hefty pouch of copper. His custom Wind Blade gauntlets, his well-balanced short sword, his suit of dark scale mail, his sturdy shield, his hooded cloak, and the ever-present "Night Runner's Veil." It was a far cry from the ragged fugitive who had fled Lumina with nothing but a stolen goblin club and the clothes on his back.

He called up his System interface, the familiar blue screen a private ledger of his true, hidden advancement.

Level 15. Dexterity 51. His speed was becoming truly terrifying. He could now comfortably sustain eight to nine stacks of [Fleeting Steps] for extended periods, and his brief, desperate pushes to twelve or even thirteen stacks (a staggering 11.7x and 14x multiplier respectively, pushing him well over 300 km/h) felt less like he was about to spontaneously combust, thanks largely to [Kinetic Inertia Damping] and his significantly improved Vitality. His mind, too, was adapting to the hyper-accelerated perception, the mental strain still present but no longer debilitating at those lower high-tier stacks. His passive skills were a symphony of subtle enhancements, each one contributing to his overall survivability and lethality.

The question now was: what next? Silver Rank opened up a new vista of possibilities, of more dangerous and lucrative quests. Did it also necessitate a change in lifestyle? Should he upgrade his lodgings again, perhaps to one of the more opulent inns frequented by Gold Rank adventurers, a place with feather beds and private baths? Should he invest in even more expensive, perhaps enchanted, gear?

He pondered this as he meticulously cleaned his Wind Blades, the familiar ritual a meditative act. The Kaelan of Earth, the one who had craved comfort and escape from his dreary existence, might have jumped at the chance for luxury. He remembered dreaming of a life where he didn't have to count every penny, where he could afford more than instant noodles and cheap soda.

But the Kaelan forged in the fires of Aethel, the Zephyr who wore a mask to hide a bounty, was different. He had learned the harsh value of coin, the fleeting nature of security. While he appreciated the relative comfort of The Gilded Griffin compared to The Rusty Mug or a straw pallet in Oakhaven, ostentation felt… wrong. Dangerous, even. Drawing attention to himself with extravagant spending was the last thing he needed. His current gear was functional, high-quality mundane equipment. Enchanted items were exponentially more expensive and would undoubtedly attract unwanted scrutiny.

No, he decided. Stay humble. Stay focused. His strength didn't come from gilded armor or a silken pillow. It came from his Trait, his stats, his hard-won skills, and his wits. Every gold coin spent on unnecessary luxury was a gold coin not available for essential supplies, for information, for a desperate escape if things went south. He would remain at The Gilded Griffin. He would continue to live frugally, his wealth a hidden reserve, not a public display. The F-Rank Anomaly had risen from nothing, and he wouldn't forget the sting of that poverty, the desperation of that flight.

His thoughts drifted, as they often did in these quiet moments, to Lumina. To the grand Cathedral, the Trait Revelation ceremony, the stark divide between the celebrated heroes and the discarded F-Ranks. He remembered Marcus Vayne, the golden S-Rank, radiating arrogance and power. Elara Meadowlight, the S-Rank healer, kind yet clearly destined for greatness. Garrick Stonefist, the A-Rank tank, stoic and dutiful. Lyra Swiftarrow, the A-Rank archer, pragmatic and sharp-eyed. He hadn't paid much attention to the other S-Ranks revealed that day; there had been a thousand new faces, a thousand names, his own shock and despair a suffocating fog. But now, snippets of conversation he’d overheard in Riverbend, tales carried by traveling merchants and bragging mercenaries, began to coalesce.

One evening, nursing a cheap ale in a noisy corner of The Gilded Griffin’s common room (mask off, hood still mostly obscuring his face), he listened intently as a group of recently arrived merchants from the capital region held court, their voices loud and self-important.

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.

"…and the Dragon Knight, they call him! Lord Kaelen Blackwood – no, wait, that’s not right, it was something similar… ah, Kenzo Ishida! That’s it! An S-Rank from the East, apparently. They say he can call forth the phantom of an ancient dragon, breathes spectral fire that melts steel! Saw him training in the King’s own arena, a sight to behold, I tell you!"

Kaelan’s blood ran cold for a moment at the similarity of the misremembered name, then he mentally filed away "Kenzo Ishida – Dragon Knight." Another S-Rank. Another potential threat, or perhaps, a distant, unattainable peer.

"Don’t forget the Storm Maiden, Lady Seraphina Dubois," another merchant chimed in, a woman with an air of someone who frequented more refined circles. "French, I believe, from her accent. Commands the very winds and lightning, they say. Saw her summon a localized hurricane on the training grounds that flattened three siege engines. The Archmages are practically salivating over her potential."

Seraphina Dubois. Storm Maiden. Another S-Rank. Kaelan remembered a flash of brilliant, almost violet light during the ceremony, a woman with striking, aristocratic features.

"And then there’s the quiet one," a third merchant added, his voice hushed. "Never says much, always in the shadows. Calls himself… ‘Void Walker.’ Real name’s a mystery. Some say he’s not even fully human anymore. Can step through shadows, they whisper, bypass any ward. The Spymaster General is apparently very interested in his… unique talents."

Void Walker. An S-Rank shrouded in mystery. Kaelan felt a prickle of unease. That sounded… dangerously effective.

These S-Ranks, along with Marcus Vayne and Elara Meadowlight, formed the core of Aethel’s prophesied saviors. Pampered from the moment their incredible powers were revealed, given the best tutors, the finest equipment, the adulation of a desperate kingdom. How had such an upbringing shaped them in the mere months since the summoning?

Marcus Vayne, Kaelan suspected, had probably allowed the power and adulation to inflate his already considerable arrogance to monumental proportions. He’d likely be demanding, imperious, convinced of his own divine right.

Elara Meadowlight, with her kind eyes, might have retained her compassion, but the pressure of being a "Lifeweaver," a beacon of hope, could be crushing. Or perhaps it had forged her into someone of incredible resilience and grace.

Kenzo Ishida, the "Dragon Knight"… the name sounded Japanese. Kaelan wondered what his personality was like. Was he honorable, disciplined, like a samurai from the stories? Or was the power of a dragon making him aggressive, territorial?

Seraphina Dubois, the "Storm Maiden." The ability to command storms suggested a volatile, perhaps tempestuous personality. Or maybe she was cool and controlled, wielding her immense power with precision.

And the "Void Walker"… that one sent a genuine shiver down Kaelan’s spine. Someone who operated in shadows, whose true nature was unknown, sounded far more dangerous than the flashy, overt power of the others.

He also heard mentions of prominent A-Ranks being groomed for leadership roles within the new Otherworlder Academy. Names like "Commander Rex" (a physically imposing man with a Trait related to tactical genius, probably Garrick Stonefist), and "Archivist Lyra" (a different Lyra, this one known for her encyclopedic knowledge Trait, possibly the A-Rank archer, Lyra Swiftarrow, having diversified her skills). They were building an institution, a system to control and direct the power of the summoned. An institution that had no place for an F-Rank anomaly like him.

It was strange, listening to these tales of the "heroes." They were people from his own world, walking, breathing individuals who had, just months ago, been living ordinary lives. Now they were legends in the making, their every feat magnified and broadcast. Kaelan felt a profound disconnect. He was an Otherworlder too, yet his path was so starkly different. Theirs was one of public acclaim and guided growth. His was a solitary scramble in the shadows, his power a secret, his very existence a crime.

He wondered if any of them ever felt the same crushing loneliness he did, the same sense of being utterly adrift in an alien universe. Or had the immediate embrace of power and purpose insulated them from such existential dread? Had they already forgotten Earth, or did they, like him, sometimes stare up at Aethel’s twin moons and feel an ache for a sky with only one?

The Kaelan of Earth, the one who devoured tales of overpowered protagonists, would have been fascinated, perhaps even envious. But Zephyr, the Silver-Ranked adventurer, listened with a detached, analytical coolness. These S-Ranks, these A-Ranks, they were now pieces on the vast, complex game board of Aethel. They were powerful, yes. Destined, perhaps. But they were also, in their own way, cogs in the Kingdom’s machine.

He, on the other hand, was a rogue element. Unseen, underestimated, unbound by their expectations or their system. And in that, he realized, lay a unique kind of freedom, a dangerous, exhilarating potential that none of them, with all their S-Rank glory, could ever truly comprehend.

His path was his own, carved out by his own will, fueled by his own broken power. He would stay humble, stay hidden, stay focused. He would grow stronger, not for a king or a kingdom, but for himself. For the slim, desperate chance of one day being truly free, in every sense of the word. The silver badge was just another step. The real journey, the true test of the F-Rank Anomaly, was still to come. And he would meet it on his own terms, from the shadows, moving at a speed the world couldn't see, couldn't anticipate, until it was too late.
