Chapter 13 of 20

Iron grind

The "Dire Rats in Merchant Gregor's Warehouse" quest was as glamorous as it sounded. Merchant Gregor, a portly, perpetually flustered man whose warehouse reeked of mildew and spoiled grain, led Kaelan into a vast, dimly lit storage space filled with towering stacks of crates and barrels. "They're in here somewhere, the little devils!" Gregor wrung his hands. "Big as housecats, some of 'em, and mean as badgers with a toothache! Chewin' through my best grain sacks, they are! Exterminate 'em all, young Zephyr, and the fifty coppers are yours!"

Kaelan, or rather Zephyr, nodded curtly, his masked face revealing nothing of his internal sigh. This was a far cry from battling Grey Fell bandits or Shadow Weavers. But it was a start. An official Guild start.

The dire rats were indeed large, their fur matted and greasy, their eyes glinting with a feral, unintelligent hunger. Their teeth, long and yellow, looked capable of inflicting nasty bites. There were easily two dozen of them, scuttling amongst the shadows and supplies.

This was a perfect opportunity to test his new "Wind Blade" gauntlets in a relatively low-risk environment. He activated two stacks of [Fleeting Steps], the familiar 1.44x acceleration a comfortable hum now, his DEXT 36 making even this low-level boost feel incredibly agile. The warehouse, with its cluttered aisles and towering obstacles, became his playground.

He moved like a whisper, a dark blur darting between crates. The rats, initially bold, soon found themselves facing an enemy they couldn't track, couldn't predict. His bladed gauntlets, an extension of his lightning-fast punches and slashes, were brutally effective. A quick jab, a slicing uppercut, a spinning backhand – each movement flowed into the next, the sharp blades leaving trails of crimson on the dusty floor. Shink. Thwack. Screee.

The notifications chimed with monotonous regularity. The XP was pitiful, but it was consistent. He focused on efficiency, on minimizing his movements while maximizing damage, on maintaining his stacks with the least possible mana expenditure thanks to [Harmonic Stacking]. His [Reactive Slipstream] even triggered once when a particularly bold rat lunged from behind a barrel, the subtle shimmer of air allowing him to avoid its snapping jaws with an almost contemptuous ease.

Within twenty minutes, the warehouse was silent save for Kaelan’s steady breathing. Two dozen rat corpses littered the floor. Merchant Gregor, who had been cowering near the entrance, peeked in, his eyes wide. "By the gods, lad! You… you made short work of 'em! Swift as a shadow, you were!" He eagerly counted out fifty copper coins into Kaelan’s gauntleted hand. "If you're ever looking for more pest control, Zephyr, you know where to find me!"

Kaelan pocketed the coins, a grim satisfaction settling in. It wasn't heroic, but it was honest work, Guild-sanctioned work. And every dead rat, every copper earned, was another small step away from the desperate fugitive he had been.

Over the next two weeks, Kaelan threw himself into the Iron Rank grind with a methodical, almost obsessive intensity. He became a familiar, if still enigmatic, masked figure at the Riverbend Adventurer's Guild. He took every available Iron Rank quest that didn't involve interacting too closely with large groups of people or venturing too far from the town for extended periods. His paranoia about the wanted poster remained a constant, gnawing companion.

He delivered packages to outlying farms, his Fleeting Steps allowing him to cover ground at a pace that astonished his clients, though he always made sure to dial back his speed significantly when approaching or leaving inhabited areas. He cleared out nests of "Gutter Goblins" (even smaller and more pathetic than their Whisperwood cousins) from the town's sewer system, a foul, disgusting job that paid surprisingly well due to its unpleasantness. He even reluctantly took on the "Missing Cat: Fluffy" quest again when the blasted feline, clearly a creature of habit, went missing for a second time. The twenty coppers felt like an insult after wading through sewer filth, but coin was coin.

His earnings were meager, but they were steady. He upgraded his lodgings slightly, moving from The Rusty Mug to a cleaner, though still basic, room at "The Wandering Wyvern," an inn frequented by lower-ranked adventurers. He ate better, supplementing the inn's bland stew with roasted meats and fresh bread from the market. He even managed to save up enough to buy a second-hand but serviceable short sword (2 Gold Coins) from Grom's Discount Defenses, thinking it might be a more versatile primary weapon than his club, with his Wind Blades serving as a deadly backup or for close-quarters combat. He began practicing with the sword in the privacy of his room, his accelerated perception allowing him to break down the movements, to learn the balance and flow of the blade with a speed that would have astounded any conventional weapons master.

But Kaelan’s true focus, his driving obsession, remained the refinement of his Trait and his own physical and mental conditioning. Every spare moment was dedicated to training. He found secluded spots outside the town walls – abandoned quarries, dense thickets along the riverbank, forgotten ruins of old watchtowers – and pushed himself to his limits.

He worked on his mana control, striving to make each activation of [Fleeting Steps] as efficient as possible. He experimented with varying numbers of stacks, trying to find the "sweet spot" for different situations – two or three stacks for sustained travel or general awareness, four to six for combat agility, seven to nine for overwhelming bursts of speed or desperate evasions. He even dared to briefly push to eleven and twelve stacks (8.15x and 9.78x speed respectively), the world dissolving into an almost incomprehensible blur of light and motion, the strain on his body and mind immense, his mana draining like water from a sieve. Each attempt was a terrifying gamble, a tightrope walk between unlocking new heights of power and catastrophic self-injury. His increased Vitality (now 18 after his latest level-up) was the only reason he wasn't tearing his muscles or shattering his bones with the sheer g-forces.

He practiced integrating his Wind Blades with his speed. He wasn't just a blur of motion anymore; he was a blur of blades. He set up makeshift targets – bundles of straw, hanging branches – and practiced delivering flurries of cuts with pinpoint accuracy while moving at high velocities. His style was unconventional, a whirlwind of unpredictable angles and lightning-fast strikes, more akin to a storm than any formal martial art.

He also worked relentlessly on his physical conditioning. He ran for miles, did endless series of push-ups, sit-ups, and squats, his body hardening, his stamina increasing. He knew his Trait was his greatest weapon, but he couldn't rely on it exclusively. Mana was a finite resource. When it ran out, he needed the mundane strength and endurance to survive.

His thoughts, as always, were his constant companions during these solitary training sessions. He replayed his past failures on Earth, the disappointed faces of his parents, the missed opportunities. That Kaelan felt like a stranger now, a weak, indecisive ghost. This new Kaelan, this "Zephyr," was forged in fear and desperation, honed by violence and necessity. He was harder, colder, more pragmatic. But sometimes, in the dead of night, when the mask was off and he was alone with his thoughts, the old Kaelan would surface, bringing with him a wave of loneliness, guilt, and a profound, aching homesickness. He missed the simple things: the smell of rain on asphalt, the taste of a cheap Earth soda, the mindless comfort of scrolling through a familiar website.

He pondered the nature of his power. Was it truly a "broken" F-Rank Trait, a fluke in the System? Or was there some hidden potential, some deeper aspect he hadn't yet unlocked? The way [Harmonic Stacking] and [Reactive Slipstream] had developed suggested the System was, at least to some extent, adapting to his usage. Could he influence further evolution through specific training or understanding? He remembered his failed engineering studies, the principles of resonance, of feedback loops. Could he apply those concepts to his mana flow, to the stacking process itself? It felt like grasping at straws, but the thought of actively shaping his own progression, rather than just reacting to it, was a powerful motivator.

During one particularly grueling session, where he was practicing maintaining eight stacks while navigating a crumbling, obstacle-strewn ruin, disaster almost struck. He misjudged a leap, his foot slipping on loose gravel. At that velocity, even a minor stumble could be catastrophic. He felt his ankle twist, a searing pain shooting up his leg. He was going to crash, hard. But then, something incredible happened. As he braced for impact, a new, deeper resonance hummed through him, not from [Reactive Slipstream]'s airy lightness, but from the very core of his [Fleeting Steps]. It felt like his accelerated timeframe momentarily intensified, allowing him to make a series of impossibly fast micro-adjustments, his limbs a blur even to his own accelerated perception. He didn't avoid the fall entirely, but he managed to twist in mid-air, absorbing the impact with a jarring roll rather than a bone-shattering crash.

[New Passive Skill Learned: [Kinetic Inertia Damping] (Rank F)]

[[Kinetic Inertia Damping]: Your profound attunement to accelerated states allows your body to subconsciously brace and distribute kinetic forces more effectively when moving at high speeds or during sudden impacts while [Fleeting Steps] is active. Reduces damage from stumbles, falls, and collisions. Slightly lessens physical strain from maintaining very high stacks.]

Kaelan lay there, gasping, his ankle throbbing but not broken, a wave of incredulous relief washing over him. Another passive skill. And this one was directly related to mitigating the dangers of his own speed. The System was adapting. Or perhaps, he was adapting, and the System was merely codifying it.

The grind continued. More rats, more sewer goblins, more deliveries. The Iron Rank quests were mind-numbingly dull, the pay often insulting, but the XP, however small, trickled in. And with each completed quest, each successful evasion of a town guard's curious stare, his confidence as Zephyr grew.

After two relentless weeks, he finally felt the familiar, exhilarating surge.

[Congratulations! You have reached LEVEL 10!]

[All Stats +1. You have gained 5 Distributable Stat Points (DSP).]

[HP and MP fully restored and increased!]

He retreated to his room at The Wandering Wyvern, the thrill of the level-up warring with his exhaustion. He needed to allocate his points, to take stock.

[Character Status:]

[Name: Zephyr (Kaelan Richards)]

[Level: 10]

[Trait: Fleeting Steps (Rank F)]

[Skills: [Reactive Slipstream] (Passive, Rank E), [Harmonic Stacking] (Passive, Rank F), [Kinetic Inertia Damping] (Passive, Rank F)]

[HP: 290/290]

[MP: 370/370]

[Main Stats:]

[Strength (STR): 13]

[Intelligence (INT): 25]

[Dexterity (DEXT): 38]

[Vitality (VIT): 18]

[Distributable Stat Points (DSP): 5]

The choice was becoming more difficult. Every stat felt crucial. But Dexterity was the kingpin of his build, directly amplifying his Trait and his evasive passives. Intelligence fueled the fire. Vitality kept him from breaking apart. Strength… was still lagging, but his speed often compensated for raw power.

Decision: 1 INT, 3 DEXT, 1 VIT.

[Stat Allocation Confirmed.]

[Intelligence (INT): 25 -> 26]

[Dexterity (DEXT): 38 -> 41]

[Vitality (VIT): 18 -> 19]

[HP: 290/290 -> 300/300]

[MP: 370/370 -> 380/380]

Dexterity 41. He could almost feel the heightened responsiveness, the subtle sharpening of his reflexes even in his resting state. He was a finely tuned weapon, constantly being upgraded. But a weapon for what purpose? To merely survive? To scrounge for Iron Rank scraps?

No. This wasn't enough. The wanted poster, the whispers of the Otherworlder academy, the sheer scale and danger of this world – it all pressed in on him. He needed to get stronger, faster. He needed to face real challenges, quests that would push him to his absolute limits, that would yield the kind of XP he now needed to progress.
