-CHAPTER 1.8 â âHEARING(?) GIRLâ-
Location: Koruch Vessel â Command Center / Bridge
Date: NTC 1446.07.15
Korsica and Thomas were sprinting through the corridor toward the bridge, gasping for air. When they arrived, ten figures were already insideâeight crew members and two android Mutes.
The moment Korsica saw how relaxed they looked, she exploded.
âWhat the hell are you all doing here, you idiots?!â she screamed. âWeâre barely clinging to our lives in there!â
The crew erupted in panic.
âCaptain, calm down!â
âWhat happened?â
âDid something go wrong in the infirmary?â
âWhereâs Kerim?!â
"THUD."
Korsica slammed her fist into the console. âShut up! Get me the infirmary camera feed, now!â
Thomas rushed to the panel and began typing frantically. âI was just doing that,â he muttered.
One of the large screens lit up. A wide-angle view of the infirmary appeared from the top-left corner. Kerim and Yusuf were in the middle of an argument. Then Kerim turned and left the room, leaving Yusuf behind.
âWhatâs going on in there, Captain?â one of the crew asked.
Korsica didnât answer. She turned to Thomas instead.
âWeâve got no choice,â she said. âWeâre leaving them in there.â
She took a breath, then added, âThomas⦠lock the infirmary.â
Thomasâs eyes widened. âCaptain⦠are you sure? The kidâs still in thereâ¦â
âHis own brother just walked out on him! Weâve got no choice. Lock it down!â
Thomas exhaled slowly. âAlrightâ¦â
He tapped a few keys. Alarms blared across the ship. Steel shutters began sealing the infirmary.
At that exact moment, Kerim burst onto the bridge, out of breath and furious.
âWhat the hell are you all doing?!â he shouted. âWhy hasnât everyone gone to the infirmary armed?!â
Silence.
Everyone froze, ashamed.
Kerim turned to the screen, and within seconds, he understood.
âAre you all insane?! Locking her in there wonât solve anything! We need to face her with every ounce of firepower we have! Thereâs nowhere to run on a ship this small!â
âOh, really?!â Thomas shouted back. âThen why did you leave your brother behind?! You didnât stay for himâhow can you judge the rest of us?!â
âEnough!â Korsica roared. âIâm the captain here! The decisionâs mine! Itâs not your place to argue!â
Kerim took a deep breath, forcing calm into his voice. âSmart people know when to be brave, and when to be afraid.â
He turned to Thomas, looked him in the eye. âI left because I had no weapon. Fighting that thing barehanded wouldâve been suicide. Dragging out an argument with Yusuf wouldâve gotten us both killed. I left to return with equipment and backupâ¦â
Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.
His voice rose again. âBut I didnât expect all of you to be such cowards.â
Thomas clenched his jaw. âSo youâre still calling us cowards?! Like youâre some kind of hero?! If we unlocked that door, youâd throw these people in first, grab Yusuf, and trap the rest inside with her! Donât pretend to be brave!â
âThe door stays locked until that freak is neutralized!â Korsica snapped. âWeâll find another way from here!â
âSheâs practically immortal!â Kerim barked. âThe only thing we know that affects her is high voltage!â
âYou canât electrify the whole infirmary!â someone shouted.
âItâs too big!â
âThatâll never work!â
âAre you all idiots?!â Kerim roared. âOf course not! If we pump enough voltage to take her down, everyone inside turns to charcoal!â
Korsica turned to Thomas, her tone suddenly cooler. âCan you do it?â
Thomas understood instantly. His voice was low. âI mean⦠I can rig something in two hours. Itâll take some work.â
Kerimâs voice rose again. âWhat are you even talking about?! Youâre going to kill Yusuf and Yorgo?!â
Korsica blinked, feigning a moment of memory. âOh rightâYorgoâs still in there too, huh?â
âWho cares?â someone muttered.
âForget that creep.â
âHeâs old enough. Let him go.â
Thomas walked over to Kerim, placing a hand on his shoulder. âKerim... we all care about Yusuf. But weâve got no other option. We canât face that monster head-on. You saw it. She wonât die. This is the only way.â
âIf you wanted to protect your brother so badly,â Korsica cut in, âyou shouldâve stayed with him! Donât come preaching now. Iâm tired of this crap!â
Kerim snapped.
He lunged forward and punched Korsica hard in the face.
"WHACK"
The captain staggered back in shock as the crew rushed in to restrain him.
âDonât you confuse me with yourself!â Kerim shouted. âI left to get weapons and support! I didnât run like you cowards!â
He turned to the men holding him. âLet me go! Just one hit! That bitchâs long overdue for a beating!â
âKerim, please!â
âWeâre worried about Yusuf too!â
âDonâtâsheâs not worth it!â
Thomas stepped in, holding him like a brother would. âItâs not easy for us either. Please donât make this harder.â
Kerim nodded toward Korsica. âEasy for that bitch. Sheâd sell us all out in a heartbeat to save herself.â
Korsicaâs face darkened.
She drew her gun.
âYou worthless piece ofâ!â
"BANG!"
The gunshot rang through the bridge.
The bullet struck Kerim in the abdomen. He didnât even realize heâd been shotâuntil he saw the blood. His legs gave out. Thomas caught him.
âCaptain! What did you do?!â Thomas shouted.
âAssaulting the captain or disobeying orders is punishable by death!â Korsica barked, now aiming the weapon at the crew. âI just put down a mutiny! Anyone else want to join him?!â
No one spoke.
She snarled. âHuh?! Anyone?!â
Still silence.
Her weapon turned to Thomas.
âThomas! Drop the traitor. Get back to work. Two hours. No excuses.â
Thomas looked at Kerim.
Kerimâs lips moved, but no sound came out.
ââ¦Iâm sorry,â Thomas whispered.
He lowered Kerim to the floor, turned, and didnât look at Korsica as he said, âAlright. Iâll start now.â
He signaled two crew members. âYou two. With me.â
They nodded and followed.
Korsica turned to the rest. âGet that traitor off my bridge. Toss him in a corner. Let him die quietly.â
The crew hesitated, exchanged glances. Then two stepped forward, lifted Kerim by the arms, and dragged him toward a shadowy corner of the bridge.
He was still breathing⦠but faintly.
Korsica stepped up to the big screen and stared at the live feed of the infirmary.
âLetâs see whatâs going on in thereâ¦â
At that momentâ
Merry looked straight up.
Straight into the camera.
As if sheâd heard her.
Korsica froze.
She took a breath. Tried to steady herself.
âNot that much, Korsi⦠calm down...â
But maybeâ
It was that much.
