Jeffrey had never been one to stir troubleâexcept when it came to bickering with Karen. Ever since she
had disrupted his peace that one time, any time he even thought about flirting with someone else, her
face would pop up in his mind like a persistent ghost.
It left him unusually irritable, feeling as if there was some unfinished business nagging at him. Iâve
never felt this way before.â
Everettâs approach to love was steadfast and enduring, so he wasnât familiar with fleeting affections.
âYou wouldnât understand even if I explained it to you,â Jeffrey grumbled. âIâm thinking of hanging out
with her again. Maybe Iâm just intrigued because sheâs so sharpâwitted. Once Iâm back home and
surrounded by all the local beauties, Iâll probably forget all about her.â
âIf thatâs your attitude, youâd better stay away from her,â Everett warned, his brow furrowing deeper with
each word Jeffrey said. âIf Dorothy comes after you for this, donât expect me to have your back.â
âCome on, man! Are we friends or not?â Jeffrey scoffed at Everettâs attempt to wash his hands of the
matter. âYouâd really ditch me over a girl?â
Everett shot him a glance, âThere are plenty of fish in the sea, but you just had to go for the one
swimming around Dorothy. I wouldnât care about any other girls you choose.â
âBut Karenâs different! Sheâs interesting!â
Everettâs lips thinned, and he spoke with a seriousness that was rare for him, âThen will you marry
her?â
Marry her?
Those words hit Jeffrey like a bucket of cold water!
He hadnât even considered marriage, and now suddenly, it was on the table.
âWhoa, arenât we jumping the gun here? I havenât even got to first base with her!â
âIf she agreed to be with you, would you marry her?â Everett pressed.
Jeffrey paused. He pondered for a moment, then shook his head, âNo, I wouldnât. The whole idea of
marriage seems so dull to me. Why do two people need a piece of paper to tie them down? Then
thereâs the meddling in each otherâs lives and shared responsibilities. Just thinking about them gives
me a headache.â
âThen donât step into her life.â
Everett figured Jeffrey was too set in his freeâspirited ways to be suddenly reined in by commitment, let
alone marriage. Even a stable relationship would probably be out of the question.
âPoof⦠so you think itâs a noâgo between us too, huh?â
âItâs really about what you want. Everyone elseâs opinions are just opinions.â
Jeffrey let out a long sigh, âAlright. But I really should be heading back home. The Lopez Corporation is
a hot mess, and Kevinâs probably on the brink of a breakdown.â
Iâve already taken over some of the workload. Once Iâm back, Iâll give him a long vacation to unwind.â
Everett answered. âMm. Jeffrey nodded, rising to his feet. âItâs getting dark. Iâm out of here. You and
Dorothy enjoy your cozy evening. I wonât intrude.â
Everett nodded
âTill see if Karen needs a lift back with me,
Everett was then speechless for their whole conversation was a waste of time.
Outside, Dorothy and Karen had found a bench under the starry sky With Karenâs presence, a rare
silence fell between them before Karen couldnât resist breaking it. âHave you⦠changed your mind?â
Karen questioned.
Dorothy knew what she was getting at, âNoâ
Karen sighed deeply and sat up straight, âYou know, I was really supportive of you finding out the truth.
Your motherâs death deserves justice, and the culprit should face the law. But seeing how much Everett
cares for you, I canât help but wonder if itâs cruel to him.â
In the blink of an eye, your closest companion could turn into your fiercest adversary. Who could
possibly cope with that? âKaren, as of now, Everettâs mother shows no sign of remorse. She probably
still thinks she got away with it by destroying all the evidence.â
